6: The Weight of Destiny: A New Beginning in a Desolate World

Before the voice could continue telling us what to do, Sasha broke the silence that had accompanied us for a moment.

“Henry, do you really think we can handle this? I mean, we're just a couple of kids, and this world is completely new and different for us. "Where we come from, everything was already built, but now, we have to start a life from scratch, a new life."

"Yeah. I know that very well, everything here is very different. I know you're scared, I am too. But we have to see the positive side of this; Let's accept our destiny, that if it is crossing our path, it is for a reason. Don't you think?” I responded to Sasha, trying to make my words sound convincing enough to her.

Sasha nodded, her expression now changing to one with more determination, feeling more confident in accepting what fate was preparing for us.

"Understood. But, I still don't understand, what will be our role in this new world? What does this voice expect from us by appointing us as guardians?”

Then, the voice seemed to have heard us while we were talking, why is she? She started answering our questions without us having told her to do so.

“As I told you before, you will be the guardians of this new world. They will be in charge of caring for it, making it grow, and keeping it intact as we have given it to them. Furthermore, Henry, you have a very important mission to fulfill, you have been chosen to be the last survivor, that is, you will have to return to your old dimension, and while the end of the world is near, with your system activated, you will be able to rescue all those survivors who are suitable to come to this new world and continue the legacy of the human race, thus preventing its extinction. Henry, with your new skills, you will be able to accomplish all these tasks, I hope you do not disappoint us, in the end, if you manage to do it, both you and the others will be the winners of a bigger prize” said the voice in our heads.

I looked at Sasha, feeling shocked at the situation ahead of us. I still don't understand how the hell fate has been able to offer me such a big responsibility like this.

"That? Oh, really? But, I believe I will be able to accomplish this… It is a lot of weight on me. “It is a very big responsibility that has been assigned to me” I said with uncertainty. It was all true, I didn't know why this was happening to me. Additionally, I was worried about two things; The first was my mother, I had to find her however she wanted, she couldn't leave Sasha and me alone in this. And the second thing that worried me was knowing if I was really capable of surviving everything that was happening in my other dimension.

“Yes, Henry. You will be able to fulfill this mission. We have put our faith in you. We know your abilities, and we know for sure that you are the hero we need. Furthermore, we trust you, please don't let us down. Your sister will stay here, she will learn basic survival things in this new dimension, while you will travel to yours to save humanity from extinction. Remember, there is a bigger prize waiting for you if you manage to win this battle against the end of the world. Good luck, Henry.”

Suddenly, the voice in our head stopped talking to us, it seems to have left. Sasha looked at me, she was calm, her look gave me so much confidence that, for a moment, I thought she was about to quickly assimilate everything we were experiencing.

“Henry, I trust you. I know what you will be able to do to save us all from this catastrophe. You are very strong, and you have those new abilities that you have acquired. Now, hurry up to save humanity, I will stay here, I will be waiting for you. Please rescue mom if you can do it” Sasha said, and she reached out to hug me.

I hugged her back, and nodded while looking at her with a smile. Something inside me told me that she was doing the right thing, that she was making the right decision, and that everything would be okay. Soon, a portal appeared in the sky that allowed us to see everything that was happening inside.

Everything inside the portal was dark, the sky remained completely gray, the rays of the sun that had previously illuminated it could no longer be seen. The atmosphere felt heavy, and from inside the portal, it felt like a strong gust of wind, as if it were a hurricane, was about to leave there to take over the peace and tranquility of the new dimension.

“I promise you that I will return as soon as possible, and that I will return safely, and that I will bring our mother back,” I told my sister before approaching the portal to get into it, and then, appearing again in our old dimension.

As soon as I entered the portal, it closed instantly. I turned around, and sure enough, I couldn't see any more towards the new dimension, I couldn't see my sister for the last time before starting my new mission.

When I emerged from the other side of the portal, I found myself in a completely desolate landscape, and at the same time, very terrifying. The sky was completely different, it was no longer as beautiful as I remembered it. There were dark and stormy clouds everywhere, there was no sign whatsoever that would let me know that the sun was going to appear. The ground shook under my feet, it felt as if the earth had never stopped shaking after the first tremor I witnessed feeling.

I look around me, and I realize that the entire ground was marked by cracks and fissures, as if the earth was going to want to crumble at any moment. In the distance, a city was burning in flames, telling me that the devastation would soon wipe out everything I had ever known.

“Okay, where will I start?” I asked myself, without taking my eyes off my surroundings. I looked at everything as if I were an explorer who was beginning his exploration of an unknown world.

My first task was to recruit survivors who were worthy of selecting to go with me to live in our new dimension. How was I going to do it? I wasn't sure I had an answer for it, I just had the hope of finding out if there were survivors. I only hoped that among these survivors, my mother would be accompanying them because I did not want to imagine what my sister's view would be where I would go to the new dimension without the company of my mother.
