Chapter Forty

The car came to a halt in front of Casey's apartment building. Aidan had brought her back after her nervous breakdown.

“Do you want me to walk you back?”

She shrugged and drew closer to the door. “No!”

Aidan giggled softly. “Thought you were ready to do anything for me?”

“I was…” She dragged on and bit her lips. “But I'm smart enough not to toil with the Claytons. No one who did ever lived to see the next day” Her eyes glowed with worry and dread as she spoke.

“They should be terrified of me!”

“If you're doing this because of Erica…” She drew closer to where he sat in the car and placed a hand on his thigh, gently fondling it.

“She's not worth it”

She looked into his eyes ready for an answer she craved but it never came.

She sighed heavily. “Anyway, I have a long day tomorrow, thank you for the evening.”

Cole opened the door and she stepped down, holding up her flowing gown with one hand and holding her purse with the other.
