Thirty minutes later.

Knock, knock!

Harper sat on the sofa, staring out the window, her face unable to hide the sadness she felt, when a knock sounded at the door.

"Go away! Don't even think that I'll open the door for you!" she shouted from inside her room.

Knock, knock!

As if ignoring her outburst, the knocking came again.

"Are you deaf? I already told you not to bother me!" Harper yanked the door open, yelling at the person standing outside—Marc.

"Aren't you hungry? You haven't eaten anything since earlier, have you?" Ignoring the annoyance written all over her face, Marc glanced into the living room.

"Look, I ordered plenty of food for both of us."

"Go away! I'm not hungry!"

Harper was about to slam the door shut again when her gaze landed on the living room. In that instant, her eyes widened in shock.

What the—?!

On the main table in the living room and on a smaller side table, dozens of plates were piled with various dishes. But that wasn't the most shocking part.

On the floor,

All the food on the plates had vanished without a trace. Not just the plates on the table, but even those on the floor were completely empty.Harper couldn't believe that Marc had eaten all of it. No matter how she thought about it, the amount was simply too much for one person to consume, even if that person was a cultivator."But there's no one else in this suite besides Marc, right?" Harper frowned. It was truly hard to believe.Even so, she didn't want to dwell on it for too long. "Who cares who ate all that food? It's none of my business!"Yet, at the same time, an idea popped into her mind."But if he ate that much, shouldn't he start feeling sleepy soon?"A smile formed on her red lips. "Right! This is my chance to escape!"Still peeking with one eye, Harper saw the suite door open, revealing a newly arrived server who immediately widened his eyes in disbelief.Especially after glancing around the suite and seeing no one else but Marc. That much food should have been enough for

"So annoying!"Clenching her fists, Harper shouted while stomping her feet. However, instead of arguing with Marc, she turned around and stormed back to her room. She could still vividly remember how her fingers had felt as if they were burning from an electric shock due to Marc’s technique earlier. She didn't want the same experience to happen to herself again, ever!As soon as Harper entered her room, Marc opened his eyes. From the start, he had suspected that this girl would try to escape from him. That was why he had deliberately stayed awake to keep an eye on her."At least this is for the best for both of us," Marc muttered softly as he collapsed onto the sofa."If you go home now, the people from the Dark Star Sect will keep hunting you down and won’t let you go."That was the reason Marc kept Harper close. It wasn’t just because he still needed the girl’s help—he was also keeping her for her own safety.

After stepping out of the hotel lobby, Harper did not head to the garage to get her car. Instead, she kept walking towards the hotel’s front gate. She knew this area well. Just a few blocks ahead lay a bustling food district and a shopping center. Walking allowed her to move around more freely, giving her access to multiple places without hassle.Besides breakfast, she also considered buying a few pieces of clothing. After walking just over a kilometer, she arrived at a small restaurant with several umbrella-covered tables out front. At nine in the morning, the place was fairly quiet, as most people had already left for work. That, however, only made Harper more pleased."A tiramisu and a cup of mocha latte, please." Choosing an empty table, Harper placed her order before taking a deep breath and closing her eyes. This was her second time dining here. The first time, she had no expectations whatsoever, having ordered a random sweet pastry and

"Harper, I didn’t make you wait too long, did I?"The owner of the approaching footsteps walked with a broad smile on his face, staring at the girl without blinking. He was a man dressed in a white shirt and black pants, moving steadily toward her. Judging by his face, he appeared to be slightly older than thirty. The moment Harper turned her head, her brow furrowed. However, what truly shocked her was not his sudden appearance.H-him... isn’t he the waiter from that restaurant? Did he follow me on purpose?"Do I know you?" Harper asked coldly as the man stopped no more than three meters in front of her.His persistent behavior had begun to bother her enough that she no longer felt the need to be polite."Why are you approaching me?""Hahaha, oh, beautiful, do you truly not recognize me? Don’t you remember someone whispering something in your ear six months ago?""Whispering something?"Harper’s face showed confusion for a moment, but then, realization struck her, and a look of shock

"Harper, what are you saying? Why are you getting so emotional?" Seeing the anger on the young woman's face, Shadow had no choice but to back down slightly."Don't you still want to join the sect I told you about?" the ninja asked quietly. "You've helped me, so of course, I will fulfill my promise to help you."When Harper agreed to help Shadow seize the Golden Nirvana, she did so not only to please Alistair. She had also asked Shadow to help her join the Dark Star sect, believing it would be beneficial for her and her family in the future.Harper actually knew little about this sect. It was only because she saw Shadow as one of its members that the desire to join suddenly emerged in her heart."Forget it!"Shaking her head, Harper no longer had any interest in joining the sect. After learning the ninja’s true nature, that desire vanished without a trace. In her mind, if the ninja was like this, then the sect must be no different."If you can act so cruelly, then the sect you follow m

"I-it..."The firm expression and sharp gaze on Harper’s face faded, replaced by evident hesitation. Fear, panic, and anxiety filled her heart. How did this man know about that? And how was she supposed to explain to him—and to everyone else, especially Lord Everstone—that she had never slept with Marc, let alone had any kind of relationship with him? What could she say now?As these questions suddenly flooded Harper’s mind, Shadow abruptly grabbed both of her hands and shoved her against the alley wall."What else do you have to say now? Spending the night with another man and then acting all composed before your future father-in-law—you’re clearly not a good girl," Shadow sneered. As if his words made it even harder for Harper to think clearly, she seemed utterly frozen as the ninja yanked her hands upward and restrained them with just one of his. Then, with his other hand, Shadow roughly tugged at the belt of Harper’s bathrobe, this time tearing it so that the robe fell open even w

"Bastard! Get your filthy hands away from me!"A loud shout echoed through the alley. But it wasn’t Harper who screamed.Even though her heart was shattered, her mind could still think. If Shadow was yelling at someone, didn’t that mean there was someone else besides the two of them? The girl opened her eyes, and tears streamed down her face even more."Marc..."That was the only word she managed to utter as her sobs grew louder. In her distressed state, she couldn’t tell if the figure before her was really Marc or just a hallucination. Yet, deep inside, she was inexplicably certain that this man would never abandon her."You're the one who should get that foul mouth of yours off my hand."Marc’s icy gaze was locked onto Shadow, his hand stretched out in front of Harper’s chest, blocking the ninja from touching her. But that only resulted in Shadow accidentally pressing his lips against Marc’s hand."You insolent brat! You still have the guts to interfere with me?!"Harboring an immen

Five hours later.Harper had no idea how long she had been unconscious when her eyelids fluttered slightly. At the same time, her awareness gradually returned, and the last thing she remembered was how her head had suddenly felt incredibly light and calm before an overwhelming drowsiness overtook her. When she opened her eyes, she found herself lying on a sofa inside a hotel suite. A sigh of relief escaped her lips—it must have been Marc who had carried her there.Turning her head to the side, her eyes widened in surprise upon seeing more than a hundred pizza boxes neatly arranged on the floor. All of them were open, and, of course, completely empty.A wide smile spread across her lips. She knew exactly who had eaten all that food. If she hadn’t seen Marc ordering an absurd amount of food before, this sight would have surely shocked her to the core.Lifting her gaze toward the sofa just ahead of her, she saw the young man staring intently at a single pizza box on the table in front of

One day earlier."I don’t have much time. I need to take Marc out—fast. But the moment she set foot in the district, this unexpected mess hit her like a slap in the face."What the hell am I supposed to do?"She couldn’t use her best men—Marvel had already gotten to them.“Give us the weapons and help us secure the money, and half of it’s yours.”That was Marvel’s promise.Ten million dollars. That was the rumored amount sitting inside the Central Bank of Cammont. If the job went well, the Larsian people would walk away with five million. With that kind of cash, they wouldn’t have to worry about survival for years.<

"Was I too harsh on him?"Leah sat by her bedroom window, staring at the stars overhead, her heart heavy with doubt. It wasn’t that she wanted to slap him. She just needed him to understand how deeply she hated the way he had acted. But now, ten days had passed. No word from Marvel. Not a single call. Not even a text.He hadn't even tried sneaking into her house to see her like he used to.Every time they had a fight, no matter how big or small, he was always the first to apologize. If they fought during the day, he'd show up that night with a cake—"Sorry" written in frosting. If they fought at night, she'd wake up to find a bouquet hanging outside her window, and there he'd be, waiting on his motorcycle. But this time? Nothing. Not even a hint of remorse.Leah had considered going to him first. She was still angry—hurt, really. Especially because Marvel didn’t seem the least bit sorry.

Gritting her teeth, she struggled back to her feet, still reeling.“Hahaha! That punch won’t kill me. No matter how far you’ve come in your cultivation, it means nothing if you’re still just a bastard like you.”Her cheek throbbed with heat where Marvel had hit her, but Leah burst out laughing. She was satisfied—ecstatic, even—that she'd landed a blow to his face in return. She knew Marvel well. He took great pride in his looks. Damaging any part of his body, especially his face, felt like a personal victory. One worth celebrating."Now look at you! Just another ugly bastard no one would even glance at! Hahaha! Leah staggered back several steps as Marvel’s punch landed squarely on her rib.She still managed to keep her grip on both daggers, but her chest was tightening, the blow clearly affecting her.“What? That’s it? That’s all you've got?” Marvel scoffed. “Still stuck at Level 12? You must’ve been slacking off like crazy.”His voice was laced with mockery, and the smirk on his face made it worse. They used to be cultivators of the same level. But two years ago, right after their relationship ended, Marvel had gone into seclusion to focus on his cultivation. When he returned to Duskmoor two months ago, no one knew how far he’d advanced. Still, plenty speculated that his current power had to be at least Level 15.“Shut your damn mouth, asshole! I’ll kill you!” Leah shouted, forcing herself to stand tall. But the fire in her eyes wasn’t as bright as before. Deep down, she hadn’t expected Marvel’s cultivation to leap this far.“Kill me? You really think you can?”Marvel clasped both hands beh

Bang! Bang! Bang!A burst of gunfire exploded from the pistol aimed directly at Marvel’s face. Leah’s expression was cold, merciless—there wasn’t a hint of sympathy or sentiment left. All she wanted now was to blow this bastard’s face apart, just like she had done to that sniper earlier. But Marvel wasn’t just any man.Just like before, when he’d dodged point-blank sniper fire, he moved again—shifting his head left and right with sharp precision, dodging the barrel of Leah’s gun. The bullets tore into the ground, missing their mark completely.“Die, you bastard! That’s what you get for messing with me! You’re gonna feel everything I felt!”Bang! Bang! Bang!Fueled by pure rage, Leah kept pulling the trigger, firing over and over, trying to hit his moving face. But no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t land a single shot. And by the time the magazine was empty, not a single bullet had even grazed Marvel’s skin.Marvel wasn’t about to waste the opening she’d just handed him.“Stupi

No one knew that Leah had once shared an intimate relationship with Marvel. The young woman had kept their connection tightly under wraps, never displaying it in public—especially not with her father Lars around. And Leah, of course, knew better than to take that kind of risk. But everything changed two years ago.Leah had planned to surprise Marvel—only to walk in on him wrapped up in a passionate embrace with a woman who wasn’t wearing a single stitch of clothing. In that moment, Leah didn’t scream. She didn’t cry. She didn’t even say a word. But from that day forward, something in her changed. The warmth between them vanished. She never got close to him again. In fact, it seemed like that very incident was what finally pushed her to leave Duskmoor—to become Violet’s personal bodyguard instead.“You

“Why did you do that?”The sniper's face—crushed beneath Marvel’s boot—was now an unrecognizable mess. But instead of looking pleased, the gangster boss stared at the young woman with a cold, piercing glare. Leah’s actions hadn’t satisfied him—they’d only raised questions.“Tell me why you shot him.”“Oh, come on. What are you even talking about?”Leah, the woman who had just appeared and gunned down the sniper without hesitation, shrugged casually. Her expression was calm, almost bored.“Why would I need your permission to kill someone who was getting in our way? Obviously, I had to take him out.”“Really? That’s your story?”Marvel narrowed his eyes, the intensity in his gaze sharpening like a blade. He studied her carefully, like a predator sizing up an unfamiliar threat.“Tell me—are you hiding something from me?”“Hufff... Thup! Thup!A pair of muffled shots rang out as two bullets silently left the barrel of a sniper rifle. Even someone standing within twenty meters wouldn’t have heard a thing.Marvel, walking calmly across the open ground, was still fifty meters away from the brush. He shouldn't have been able to hear those shots—just like the subordinates of his who’d already ended up dead. And yet, out of nowhere, the man suddenly raised both arms the exact moment the shots were fired.Tap! Tap!With lightning speed, he swatted the two bullets away before they could lodge in his chest, deflecting them in random directions.“All you know is how to sneak around and take potshots, huh?” he growled, eyes narrowing toward a specific spot beyond the shrubs. He'd already figured out where the shots were coming from.“You’re not getting away. You’re going to pay for what you did.”Thup! Thup!As Marvel spoke, two more bullets whizzed toward him—this time aimed at his head and neck. But just as the sniper pu
