“Your commanding officer seems to be quite the reliable man.” Chris could not remove his eyes from the man who was in charge of them.
With every order that he makes and every word he says, every soldier in their platoon seems to respect and follow without any hesitations.
They were currently jogging along the wide, concrete pathway that seemed to stretch out further, having only dim tunnel lights that were so far apart from each other, making it hard to see what was in front of them.
“Who, the sergeant, sir?” Oliver asks with a smile, as he did not understand much of the question, being busy with breathing to keep up with the group.
“Yes,” was Chris’s only answer since he too was struggling with the platoon.
Thankfully, the sergeant would take a look at them every once in a while. Noticing this, the man slowed down the pace of their group to make sure that they were all together and not too far off from each other.
“He definitely is, sir, Sergeant Raynald Sanchez’s men consider him a hero, after all, he managed to save a lot of them during the incident in the city, I heard he didn’t leave any man behind.” Oliver’s nodded, his eyes showed wonder, amazement, and admiration as he turned to the said man.
“That’s reassuring, though I don’t understand why he’s so determined to pass the chain of command over to me.” Up until now it still bothered him that the man kept insisting that he took over their platoon, though he politely declined two times already.
“Oh, that’s quite easy, sir. Sergeant Sanchez is a man who goes by the book, and since it’s only proper that the highest-ranking officer be given that power, he thinks he’s going out of line.” Oliver laughs it off, understanding the reason for the misunderstanding.
“Well, I’m kind of against that in this kind of situation, especially since I can see how capable he is,” he clarifies, knowing that he will just end up causing trouble he does agree to it.
He just then tried to run faster to at least get a bit closer to the platoon, they were almost at the back of the group when he could not help but stop.
Chris felt his skin crawl, along with the sudden shiver that ran through his spine. The assuring sounds that he was hearing a while ago had disappeared and were now replaced by an ominous and dreadful feeling that seem to come from what was in front of them. He ended up swallowing hard when all of a sudden he heard muffled screams, what seemed to be explosions, and some screeching sounds.
It was only then that he noticed that something was off within the testing grounds, they were taking too long and the place seemed abandoned and too quiet though other people went ahead of them a while ago, and when he checked his watch, he had found out that they had been running for almost half an hour.
“Sir?” Oliver called out when he noticed that Chris was being left out.
This prompted the whole platoon to be put on a halt as everyone looked back to see Chris standing frozen in his tracks, staring blankly.
Everyone started looking at one another, some were smirking, others seemed wary, the sergeant was quick to run back to him.
“Sir, do you wish to take a break?” sergeant Sanchez asks while inspecting him.
It was only then that Chris managed to snap from that sudden trance, he looked at all the people around them and ended up flustered from the embarrassment of having everyone's attention.
“Uhm, no, sergeant,” he tries to calmly say, but then a sudden wave of panic and fear struck him, making him tremble when he felt his head throbbing from the sudden wail that seems to have come from the end of the tunnel.
Chris ended up grabbing his head as he felt the sudden struck of pain, along with several murky visions that kept popping inside his head from the loud, screechy sound.
“Is there a problem, sir?” Sergeant Sanchez was now squatting to try to take a look at his face as he was now facing the ground while bending down.
Chris looked at the man with wide eyes, seeing as he did not seem to be bothered by the noises around them. “Doesn’t anybody hear that?” he asks, immediately looking at the other who too was oblivious to the sounds.
“Hear what sir?” Oliver was now standing beside him, also trying to see what was going on.
The two soldiers were quick to react, not wanting to take chances when a power user was acting like that. Sergeant Sanchez quickly gave a signal to everyone to be alert and on the lookout as all of them began moving to the side of the tunnel, scattering with quick yet silent footsteps.
“Rodrigo, move!” the man orders one of the soldiers who immediately nodded before moving on ahead.
Everyone was now vigilant, observing their back and front for any signs of a possible problem.
Same as before, they were only given either a knife or sword to use during the test besides food rations for the whole journey within the tunnels.
“Sir, your orders?” Sergeant Sanchez asks as he gave a salute when Chris was finally able to catch his breath and stand straight again.
“Sergeant, are you familiar with the proceedings of this test?” He asks somewhat being trouble by the things that he was now noticing.
“Yes sir,” the man said with a straight face.
“Didn’t you notice that we’ve been running for almost thirty minutes,” he continued looking around the single pathway that they were traversing.
“Yes sir,” the man once again answered still not flinching nor being concerned.
“Don’t you think that doesn’t make sense?” Chris could not help but frown as the man seemed unbothered by that.
“I don’t understand sir.” That was when the sergeants’ eyes finally showed an ounce of urgency and worry.
Chris looked in front of them, they could no longer see the soldier that had gone ahead as the path curved to a turn. He then turned to the sergeant once again who was attentively waiting for what he had to say.
He took in a deep breath as it seemed that none of them noticed anything. “If I remember correctly, each of the five tunnels leads to a single space where we are bound to meet the others, once there, we will once again choose entrances that have specifically designed tests and during this time there should be someone giving out orders or assisting us via a speaker, but I haven’t seen any of that nor any camera at all since we began moving.” He started pointing out several things that should have been within a part of the said tunnel.
“I heard they made some adjustments within the tunnel, sir, as they had already mentioned a while ago,” sergeant Sanchez reminded him, thinking that he would have forgotten the announcement and orders that were given to them since he was late.
“I know, though I haven’t seen any signs of renovation, plus, if I remember correctly, we should have reached the second phase of the test fifteen minutes ago, so how come this path seem to stretch out even further,” he points out something that had started bothering him the moment he notices how long they were taking to reach the end of the passageway.
“Sir, this may be part of the remodeling, as I have heard they added endurance and another kind of test within these tunnels,” Sergeant quickly stated still trying to make out the things that he noticed.
“Yes, sir, I think so too, the army is capable of building this in a span of a few weeks, especially with the technology and people that we have down here,” Oliver quickly intervened wanting to save his face.
But Chris could not help the feeling of dread that was creeping all over him, along with the strange procedure that they were undergoing. “Then where are the cameras and speakers? What’s the point of this whole test if they aren’t able to monitor any of us?” he burst out in frustration as he could not shake off the feeling that he was having.
“Sir, If I may…” The sergeant was now raising his hand to try and calm him down.
But he was unable to continue when they heard a sudden noise that came in front of them. They didn’t manage to make it out, but it seem to have echoed.
“What was that?” Oliver frowned looking at where the sound had come from.
Everyone was suddenly alert, knives out, and were in a crouching position. The tension was immediately felt by everyone as footsteps could now be heard coming their way. It didn’t take long before a shadow was seen moving before the figure of a person running towards them finally appeared.
“It's Rodrigo,” one of the soldiers' states upon recognizing the man who was rushing back.
He seemed to be in haste, sweating as he was lost for air while his feet tried to keep his speed up.
“What’s wrong with him?” Oliver frowned noticing the frantic look on the man’s face.
“Ru...Run, It's them, it's them!” the soldier kept shouting as he sped past his comrades.
The sergeant was quick to grab hold of the pale, restless, and panting soldier. “Private!” he shouted as he tightened his hold on the man’s collar.
“It's them, it's them,” Rodrigo kept shouting with wide teary eyes.
“Se-Sergeant,” the other soldiers began to speak out loud as they all started slowly backing away.
From where the man came a large shadow also emerge, It didn’t take long before the creature was full wolfish form was seen, trotting its way along the pathway, head bent down as its tongue was out from panting like a dog.
All of the soldiers immediately panic, some even fell down and began shaking in fear of the huge wolf-like beast that was headed towards them.
“Everyone, back!” Sergeant Sanchez quickly ordered making everyone run.
Yet Chris was unable to move in place as he frowned at the familiar beast who was moving at a brisk and relax pace, seemingly unaware of them.
“Sir Chris!” Oliver called out when he noticed Chris still standing there like a statue. He immediately ran back to grab the man.
The sergeant was quick to notice this and also quickly came to help. “Special officer!” he shouts helping the private grab unto Chris.
The two men were carrying him side by side as they tried to run back to where they came from. It was then that the wolf-like beast’s ears pointed upward, its fangs showed, and finally reacted to what was happening as it dashed towards the panicking soldiers.
Within seconds the beast was able to reach them, jumping to one side of the tunnel in a zig-zag motion to cut them off. Many of the soldiers fell to the floor as the monster bared its fangs, growling at the men who were surrounding it. Its eyes were fixated on Oliver and Sergeant Sanchez who was still holding on to Chris.
The sergeant, though panting did not break eye contact with the beast, he even went as far as raising his knife to it to prepare for an attack.
The wolf-like creature did not like this at all, as it quickly pounce with its mouth wide open showing the huge large fangs that were as long as the man’s arms.
The sergeant did not back away, letting out a loud war cry as he charge for one last stand against the beast.
“Stop!” Chris’s voice echoed.
The wolf-like beast froze in place, its drool dripping down its mouth as it was already halfway on the sergeant's arm. Sergeant Sanchez's knife on the other hand had already managed to connect to the beast but it just slid from the hard, scale-like fur.
The sergeant's breathing was fast and erratic when he noticed that the creature did not dare to bite off his hand, yet its eyes still had this rage and fearsomeness as it gaze at him. Everyone was in awe as the man was able to slowly back away, all the while the creature remained in place, like a frozen statue.
Though his mouth was trembling, Chris could not help but test his theory as he was able to order the creature with just his words
“Sit,” he tried to say as loud and authoritative as he can, though his teeth ended up grinding.
Everyone’s eyes nearly popped out as the huge beast quickly obliged, it turned from a menacing, dangerous monster into a sort of slobbering huge mutt that even let out its tongue as it gave out puppy dog eyes while looking at Chris.
“What in the name of hell.” The sergeant's jaw dropped unable to believe what he was seeing.
Oliver’s ended up with a giddy grin on his face as his eyes turned round with amazement while watching Chris walk towards the huge wolf-like beast.
“Down,” he ordered making the beast put its head on the ground, whining like a very subservient dog.
Even Chris could not believe what was happening but there was this tickling sensation in his chest as he began caressing the creature's snout.
“Good boy,” he smiles, chuckling at it when he saw the beast wag its tail.
‘Queen’ the beast’s voice echoed within Chris’s mind as the beast look at him with sheer joy and adoration.
Several of the other soldiers move a few meters apart from them as Chris took on the lead this time, along with the sergeant and Oliver who was still starry-eyed while staring at the huge beast.“Sir, can I touch it?” He asks but his hand was already raised at it.Like an adorable obedient dog, the wolf-like beast just wagged its tail as they moved along the tunnel. It seem to be smiling as it sort of pranced while its tongue dangled out of its mouth.“Uhm, I...I guess,” Chris ended up saying. The young man didn’t even hesitate upon hearing that, he seemed like a little kid as soon as he grabb
“You think we will see those things that killed those people?” Oliver ask while they were treading another long pathway.Chris ended up feeling a chill run down his spine, remembering those bodies that they found a while ago. “I hope not, I still want to get back home in one piece,” he tries to laugh it off, not wanting to cause concern to the others that were following them.“Same here,” Oliver chuckled as he nodded. “By the way, sir Chris, I wasn’t able to ask you this but what exactly made you join the front lines? I mean, since your ability is still a bit unstable and unknown, wouldn’t it have been better to stay within the camp doing office work?” he states, remembering the jurisdictions of the army.
Standing at around fifteen feet tall. The serpent kept swaying from left to right. Its round dark eyes glowed. While its red scales seemed to glimmer as it move, giving it the impression of waves. No one dared to move, seeing as the creature had an inkling to attack anything that took any kind of motion. They got that idea since it suddenly began spitting flames at all the exits that were there. They were all literally helpless now since Wolfenstein and Chris seemed to have been petrified by the beast when they accidentally looked at one another's eyes. It was like all three have had this staring contest for almost an hour, which just made all of them very anxious.“Sergeant, what are we going
Everything was bright red. Chris could feel his body floating, yet shrouded in warmness. He opened his eyes and was shocked to see what seemed the same as a thin layer of skin surrounded in veins all over him. There was the sound of bubbling and rumbling everywhere. Though it felt as if being submerged in liquid, breathing wasn’t really that hard.“A queen!” an echoing voice suddenly began crying out the moment Chris closed his eyes.“Who’re you?” He tried calling out. Frowning when he noticed he wasn’t even opening his mouth to talk. He immediately realized that once again he was communicating via thought.“Let us serve you, oh queen!” More voice
“Peculiar,” was all Dr. Steinz could say.As part of the proper procedure, they immediately sent all of them to the laboratory after escaping the tunnel. They also dispatched armed soldiers to check on any other survivors inside.Chris felt both relieved and awkward because he was not alone there anymore. He had the entire platoon with him. All of them buck naked while several people poked, grabbed, and touched every nook and cranny of their bodies. Checking for anything that looked unusual. But after hours of getting those rigorous and torturing experiments, they found nothing. From the x-rays, scans, blood, and test even that thing of taking specimens. All of their tests came back with
“This doesn’t look like the same place as last time?”Oliver could not help but scratch his head, seeing an entirely changed testing facility. The tunnel still had that long, winding road, but it did not feel as vast as before. The air felt dry and coiled, which gave this suffocating feeling all around them. Besides that, they immediately noticed the camera’s that were attached all over the ceiling.“Yeah, the place looks completely different.”Sergeant Sanchez stayed wary of the facility, keeping his gun close by and at the ready, all the while his gaze wandered on every corner.<
“Sergeant, are you all right?”The two of them shout seeing as the man was still standing there. Arms raised, covering his head to protect it. The officer was gawking at himself, same as they were, when he straightened up to check himself for any injuries.“Somehow, yes.”He had this surprised look on his face as he turned to them. Holding his laughter from not dying from that trap.“Are those real bullets? Why are they using those?”Oliver noticed the live ammunitions that were scattered on the floor. They were still smoking, bent, showing no parts that they were fake.“It’s what they were talking about. They went with the near death approach to force the power to come out of us.”Chris let out a sigh, r
“The doctors seem to be very pleased.”Oliver had this giddy smile on his face, looking at how the old men in white were laughing along with the higher officials of the army. All of them were shaking hands, giving out compliments to one another, all the while disregarding all three of them.“Why wouldn’t they be? It just means that they’ll be able to get more funds with this development. Especially since all of us have shown a great deal of improvement.”Chris whispers to them, in the longest that he had been there, he was quite aware of how some things run there. Lack of results meant c
Within the darkness, on a floating platform made of trees, vines, and krad carcasses, was Chris, sitting on a throne of spikes and bent trunk, along with the wriggling doctor. The roots of the fauna continued to grab hold of the now silent machinery, as it too remained helpless in the void.“We can breathe! Fascinating.”Steinz chuckled, as they were both able to remain alive, even within the emptiness of the space. A thing which was impossible. The chill prevailed, together with the silence, but it did not bother both of them, being protected by the makeshift vessel.“Let’s see you enjoy it when you get bored with the place.”Chris grumbles, sighing as he narrowed his gaze onto the infernal device. The object may have stopped, but he was certain its power remained.“I am positive we can find a way to kill boredom in someway.”The old geezer let out another cackle, enjoying his weightlessness, swimming within the nothingness like a serpentine fish. He used his webs as an anchor, makin
The skies began opening up, tornadoes appeared increasingly. It started wreaking havoc, along with the continued earthquakes.Chris witnessed it all, watching how the land was breaking because of the machine. He took in a deep breath, feeling the drudge in his chest, contemplating on his plan if it will work. He’d been starting there for an hour now, and all this time, he was having doubts because of the fear which was nudging inside of him.He was so far in his thoughts that he hardly notice the portal opening nearby. Out came Raynald, a healed up Oliver, and the others. All of them stunned to see him just standing there, unmoved by all the chaos, looking into the nothingness with lifeless eyes.“Matriarch, everything all right?”It was the sergeant who asked, being the only one bold enough to approach and check up on him. That wake him from his dreamlike state, sensing those familiar energies. He smiles, having those warm presence surrounding him.Them being there somehow jolted his
Chris stared above, watching that beautiful large planet in the sky. He smiles, unable to believe that they are going to collide with such a gorgeous thing. He turns his gaze to the pyramid, humming non-stop. Spike roots rot around it, barely touching the area. The golems which tried to go near the site all crumbled.Once again, he fires a shot. The beam deflects, ricocheting on the nearby tree.He clicks his tongue in frustration. The machine had created its own barrier. He could only find out after getting pushed back when he approached it.“Fascinating, isn’t it? My life’s work.”The gurgling voice states.Chris’s eyes rolled, huffing in irritation before turning to the now crawling geezer. The old man’s head popped out of the body of a large beetle larvae, web like mucus continued to flow out of him, three hands twitching with excitement.Even in his new form, the fellow remained pompous of his job, as it showed in how he gaze at the mechanism.“Yes, I would have commended you for
After an hour of fighting, general Gently’s men started retreating, disappearing within the covers of the mist. The man himself withdrew into the veil of that thick, grayish cloud. The doctor’s lackeys cheered in triumph, having push back their enemy who tried to destroy their weapon. All of them letting out laughs, because even the monsters that were charging in had vanished.Chris watch as the group celebrated their victory and after a thorough observation, he confirmed his theory about them.Once they became complacent enough, he makes his move, stepping out of the guise of the fog calmly.“I knew you were still alive. Doctor Howard Steinz.”He states, narrowing his sights at the man who stood in the middle of them all.The geezer’s smile faded, frowning upon seeing him walk unfazed in front of all those men.The crowd was quick to gather, blocking themselves in defense of the elderly fellow. Those who had a barrier ability created a gigantic dome, protecting both the machine and t
Above them, the cloud ridden sky sparked and roared, as the unrivaled beings clashed with each other.Behind them, booms of cannons and rattling of machine guns continued, and in front, debris would fall off from the top, while flashes of different colored lights would appear, together with the sounds of explosions.Chris remained still, staring at the two individuals flying in the air while cooking up a plan inside his head.“Matriarch, you think it was wise to use him?”It was Finny, fidgeting from the pressure in the atmosphere. Both superpowers kept releasing an immense trace of energy, reaching down below. It continued to make them sense the overpowering presence, causing the unbearable sensation of staying there, since they still got that fear of the danger being close by.“Zero can handle himself.”He mutters the name they gave him, confident that the being is strong enough to take on his opponent. The only trouble they had was the stray beam falling down, blowing up a portion
Chris narrowed his eyes, feeling every bit of his body trembled in anticipation. His adrenaline was trashing about, his hearts continued to pump uncontrollably fast. The amount of aura the man was releasing was as he had expected, inciting a higher excitement in him.A grin formed inside his mask, unable to hide the sheer joy he was experiencing from relief.“Get him out of here.”He orders, not removing his eyes on the guy. From having witnessed the battle with Oliver unfold a moment ago, he was now used to his speed, so he realized how much effort he needed to exert to stop him.Though he stood straight, his fingers were twitching, alert to take out his weapon if the fellow tried to move from his place.A portal opened beside the wounded youngster, letting out Harold, Raynald, Finny, and Marco. All four were wearing masks, hiding their identity from the guy.The double S class stayed in a steady battle pose, weary of beginning an attack after that. Especially because his wound conti
The force that Oliver released blasted away all five mercenaries. The others caught the effects of his sudden surge, because of the wind blowing from him from the pressure. The double S class, Carl, who grinned lasciviously while looking down on the events as it unfolded, also mesmerized by the dazzling display.Oliver’s armor completely changed. It now glistened with a blinding white light, the design on each piece that he wore became more intricate.“What did he do?”Nikolai, the serpentine user, was gritting his teeth, trying to keep himself steady. The pressure being thrown at them made it difficult to move. It’s weight pushing them down to the ground. When everything settled, they all sensed an impending gap in their levels, just by looking at the youth.Oliver can feel the power surging through every vein in his body, increasing all his senses. It was as if it turned him invincible at the moment, having an overflowing amount of energy, along with becoming so light on his feet.W
Oliver’s heart raced, each time someone turns his way, his blood rushing as he continued moving in the mist's guise. His every motion stayed silent, quick, and fluid. He pauses when he reaches the summit, as the clearing no longer provided any kind of protection. It was where the opening yet did not have any area to hide.He takes a few huffs of breath, shutting his eyes to muster his courage, readying himself for what he is about to do.Once done, he did not hesitate to take a step forward, having put all his mind into it. In seconds, he dashes about five meters into the clearing, but his momentum was not enough to reach the gap.“It’s the sniffer!”One soldier got a glimpse of him, gaining the attention of the others. All those that were in reserve promptly rush to the site. But he had already broken through the force field, slamming his shield right into it without a problem. He uses the sudden pause as a leverage to shift his movement, turning to his side to head towards the pyram
Flames, flashes of light, and debris mixed into the mist. There was barely nothing to see there because of it.Screams of terror, despair, and anger filled the air, along with the explosions and shots now and then.Deep within the middle of it all, Oliver was pulling his father to the safety of a nearby mound that he saw. Away from all the beams, bullets, and other stuff that were flying around.“Come on, dad.”He urges, as his old man could no longer move, groaning with each motion because of the wound on his legs. They froze in place, hearing a loud clicking sound behind. Instinctively, he let out a shield, blocking a claw in the nick of time.He winced, receiving the brunt and weight of the force, his bones cracking, forcing him to bend his knee to weaken its pressure.Huge mandibles began munching on his defense, attacking to break through it, while its scythe claws pulled at him. All he could do was tug at it, drawing its attention to hide his father from those large, dark, insec
