149: Too Much To Take

The news was too much for Emily to take. She felt her legs give way beneath her, and she sank to the floor, clutching her chest as if trying to hold her shattered heart together.

Bitter, uncontrollable sobs wracked her body, and she cried out in agony, her voice echoing through the room.

Dolores and Mia rushed to her side, their own faces streaked with tears. They knelt beside her, trying to hold her, to console her, but Emily was inconsolable. She wept with the raw, guttural cries of someone whose world had just been ripped apart.

"He called me a few hours ago," Emily sobbed, her voice breaking. "He told me he was going to come pick me up. How can he be dead? How can this be real?" She clung to her mother and sister, her tears falling like rain.

Dolores wrapped her arms around her daughter, her own body shaking with sobs. "I know, sweetheart, I know," she whispered, her voice choked with grief. "I'm so sorry."
