The early evening air was crisp as Marcus' convoy made its way back from the business conference. His thoughts drifted to the contracts he'd secured, another victory in his meteoric rise. While he was making prominent business moves, Victoria and James were suffering just like he wanted. Marcus pulled out his phone from his breast pocket and tuned into the latest gossip. As expected, the news about the Wong’s and Parker’s was still trending. Marcus smiled to himself and turned off his phone, his gaze turning to the street lights outside the window as the bulletproof SUV glided smoothly through the quiet streets, flanked by security vehicles.

His driver suddenly slammed on the brakes, the force pulling Marcus forward for a brief second.

"Sir, I think we’ve got —"

The windshield exploded.

Gunfire erupted from all directions, shattering the silence. Marcus' security team immediately got out of their cars and returned fire, but they were outnumbered. Marcus blinked, frozen in place. He h

Despite what Marcus had told Lori the day before, he was not discharged the next day. If anything he was held by the hospital for the next three days for his recovery with the help of his friend Sarah who agreed with everything the doctor had to say. He had been warned by the doctor that he needed complete bedrest and that they were sure he would go straight to work if he was allowed to leave so even with Macus’ arguements he was still kept in the hospital. Much to his dislike. The only good thing was that the press had no idea what he was going through behind those walls, thanks to the tightlipped staff that the hospital had. Over the next few days though, as Marcus recovered, Lori and Sarah worked tirelessly. They traced shell casings, followed money trails, and pieced together fragments of information. That day Sarah had come to visit him but not just to check up on him like usual, she had more to offer. "The funds came through a series of shell companies," Sarah reported as she

  • The Overnight Billionaire's Revenge   Chapter Twenty-One: THE INTERROGATION

The fluorescent lights of the interrogation room cast harsh shadows across David Hall's face as he sat, handcuffed to the metal table. His hospital scrubs had been replaced with an orange jumpsuit, and the confident facade of a professional killer had crumbled into something far more human and afraid. He had been caught and he knew that at that point there was no way he was getting off scot-free. Marcus observed him through the one-way glass, noting how David's fingers drummed nervously against the table's surface as his hands were chained to the metal loop on the table. Detective Zhang stood beside Marcus, coffee in hand, reviewing the preliminary evidence they'd gathered from David's phone after their subpoena had been granted. "His device is a goldmine," Zhang commented. "Burner phone numbers, encrypted messages, even some offshore account details. It has a lot that tells us that he was hired but not so much on who hired him. He seems like an amateur for him to still have all thi

Victoria Wong sat in the corner of the restaurant, sipping on a cocktail while she tried to convince her old associates to work with her again. She kept hearing the same words.“I’m not sure this is the right time.”“Deal with your current problem and then get back to us.”“I’ll have my assistant give you a call soon.”She had been there for hours, speaking to different people and she still got the same damn replies when she asked them to go back into business with her. Now, she sat across from her long time friend, Marissa Devon, smiling incessantly, knowing fully well that Marissa would never do anything business wise without being wooed and cosied up to first.“You know, I do have another business venture coming up. Of course, one where my name would not be involved.” She brought up, dropping her glass on the table.“Oh, so like an anonymous kind of business. Like you still own it but no one knows that it’s you?” Marissa asked, somewhat intrigued. “Yes, exactly. A ghost venture. I

Victoria Wong stood at the podium, perfectly composed in a cream-colored suit that made her look both powerful, innocent and more like a woman scorned. The press conference room was packed with reporters, their cameras trained on her face as she delivered her statement with a monotone voice like she had practiced what she was going to say to them beforehand. "I want to thank everyone for coming today," she began, her voice steady and clear. "As many of you know, I was recently subjected to a humiliating public arrest based on completely unfounded allegations. I was dragged out of an important meeting by the New York Police Department against my will and on completely false charges. These charges were dropped immediately due to a complete lack of evidence."She paused, allowing her words to sink in before continuing. The reporters were hooked and she was going to keep them that way. At least until they turn their fangs to her next victim. Marcus. "What happened to me was nothing shor

  • The Overnight Billionaire's Revenge   Chapter Twenty-Four: RICHARD WONG

Just as Sarah had reminded Marcus, the date for Victoria’s father, Richard had arrived. The courthouse steps were crowded with reporters, their cameras flashing like strobe lights as Marcus made his way inside. He kept his expression neutral, ignoring their shouted questions about Victoria's latest interview – the one where she'd tearfully described him as a "manipulative man who would do anything for power.". They also shot questions at him, asking him of his involvement in the case as a potential witness. He didn’t answer any of them but he made a point to clear all that later. Inside the courtroom, Richard Wong sat at the defendant's table, somehow managing to look both dignified and victimized in his perfectly tailored suit. Their eyes met briefly, and Marcus saw nothing but cold contempt in the older man's gaze. Good. Let him be angry. Angry people made mistakes. Marcus sat in the pews as one of the audience. He turned his head only to be met with Victoria and Eleanor glaring at

  • The Overnight Billionaire's Revenge   Chapter Twenty-Five: JAMES PARKER

Marcus adjusted his tie for the third time as he waited outside the courtroom. Being called as a character witness for James felt wrong on every level, but his lawyers had insisted it was necessary – something about being subpoenaed or forced if he didn’t agree to what the defense wanted. Still, defending the man who had helped enable the Wongs' corruption left a bitter taste in his mouth."The defense calls Marcus Chen to the stand," James' lawyer announced. As Marcus walked to the witness box, he caught James' eye. The man looked smaller somehow, his usually impeccable suit hanging slightly loose on his frame after weeks in custody. Despite everything, Marcus felt a twinge of pity. James had always been more of a follower than a mastermind. A bad friend but still. "Mr. Chen, how long have you known the defendant, James Parker?""Approximately seven years," Marcus answered, keeping his voice neutral. "We worked together at Wong Enterprises and he was my best friend.”"And during tha

“This is everything I found," Lori said, spreading files across Marcus' desk in his study with practiced efficiency. "Ray Alvarez, forty-two years old. Stage four lung cancer. His treatment costs are being covered by an offshore account that I traced back to a shell company owned by – guess who?"Marcus leaned forward, examining the documents, his ear perking up at what Lori was telling him."Victoria.""Exactly. But, the payments aren’t going through like they normally did. Anyway, he's got a daughter in college, massive medical debt despite Victoria's contributions, and..." Lori pulled out another document, "three previous arrests for violent crimes, all mysteriously dropped after intervention from high-priced lawyers he shouldn't have been able to afford."Marcus absorbed the information, already formulating his plan."And you're sure about the cancer diagnosis?""Terminal. His latest scans show the cancer has spread to his liver. Doctors give him two months, tops." Lori's voice so

The police station was nearly empty when Marcus and his men escorted Ray through the back entrance. It was the end of the day and some of the officers had headed back to their homes but there were a few who lounged about, trying to finish their workload before calling it a day. Detective Zhang was one of them. He had waited for them, his face grim as Marcus walked into the station with Ray in tow."How exactly did you find him?" Zhang asked Marcus, his voice stern and on the verge of beration."Like I said on the phone, I have my ways. I'm not tied back by the law like you are." Marcus loosely explained, causing Zhang to frown."I know I'll regret this later but before anything we need his statement first. We'll come back to this later." Zhang caved in, wanting to get what he needed first before he asked Marcus how the hell he had tracked down an assassin and convinced him to confess to the police all of a sudden."Let's go." Zhang said as he grabbed Ray by the arm and led them straig

It took Victoria forever to actually pick out an outfit to wear and go downstairs but it was even longer for her to style her hair and work up the nerve to face those men again. She didn’t really care about the time limit that they gave to her. She just wanted to relax and enjoy the pleasures of being somewhat rich again even if it was only going to last for a week. She would do whatever she wanted on her own time. That was her mind set because after all, they were going to pay her to be here so she had the upper hand.About three hours passed by and Victoria finally left the room she was given in a black as night Saint Laurent gown and sashayed through the hallways, touching and glaring at

  • Chapter Eighty-Nine: A TASTE OF FREEDOM

As per the call that Micah had received about where to get Valerie, the trio had arrived at the local police station on the outskirts of the city. The place was bustling with activity—officers moving about, the sound of phones ringing, and the unmistakable sterile smell of institutional cleaning products filling the air. It was a stark environment, especially for someone who had always bragged about living an illustrious life. Micah could feel his unease as he took one look at the building. He expected Victoria to be in a better situation, but as his eyes landed on a thin figure sitting on a bench near the processing desk, he sighed at the drastic change, a small smile still trying to show on his lips due to her look. He and his family got processed at a desk near the entrance and then walked over to her, who still didn't notice them and looked like she cared less about her current predicament. Her appearance was disheveled, her once-pristine image now gone. Elias scrunched his face

For now, we just want to make sure that you’re okay.”Marcus gave them a suspicious look but said nothing about his suspicions. They were keeping something from him and he would make sure that he found out what it was. Although he was told that they were his family, he didn’t know these people and he was not sure what they actually wanted him for, but for some reason the man who said that he was his father looked a bit familiar. He was about to say something else when the door to the room opened up and a familiar face barged in, her face showing her distraught and her mouth in a frown. “My little dagger.” She pouted as she pushed through the men in the room and approached Marcus on the bed, holding his hands in hers as soon as she reached. “Hey! Who the hell are you? You can’t just barge in here and …” Micah screamed at the woman but

Marcus’ eyes opened up to reveal the white and sterile look and smell of a room that was plagued with an incessant beeping noise. Bright lights briefly blinded him causing a sharp pain to go up his head as he shielded his eyes from the light. He groaned as he found himself lying in a hospital bed, his head and arm wrapped in bandages and a throbbing pain in his skull. He turned over and saw a nurse checking his vitals and scribbling in a notepad. As she saw him look at her, she smiled at him, a bit shocked that he opened his eyes in the first place.“Mr. Wei. You’re awake. Oh, I have to inform doctor Clifford. Hold on just a bit. I’ll be back soon.”She didn’t wait for Marcus to speak up before she booked it out of the room in order to call the doctor in charge of his case. Marcus winced as he tried to sit up a bit still waiting for the nurse to come back. He placed his hand on his head and felt the bandages. What happened to him? The nurse didn’t disappoint as she waltzed back into t

  • Chapter Eighty-Six: CLOSER TO DEATH ONCE MORE

It had been a month since Marcus received the sinister gift from who he knew to be Alexandra. There had been no movement from her since then and the police had not been able to come up with her whereabouts. Even Lori couldn’t hack the public servers enough to find her. Marcus had recruited all the people he thought could help but no one could find her. It was like she fell off the face of the earth. She had become a ghost. It was unnerving but there was not much he could do about the matter even though it irked the shit out of him. As for Davon, it didn’t take long until he was charged with all the overwhelming evidence the DEA found against him. Marcus had the officers offer him a deal. If Davon would give up his mother then he would have a reduced sentence. Davon refused and tried to put up a fight by hiring the best lawyers but even that couldn’t save him. The evidence was too substantial to fight in court. Although Marcus and his family couldn’t attend the court hearing due to t

  • Chapter Eighty-Five: NOT SO VIELED THREAT

Marcus’ eyes fluttered open at the sound of footsteps running around his room. He sat up feeling a bit better than he was the day before. The day that it had all gone down. Not as planned but he was better off than he was some days ago. A chill went up his spine and he rubbed his arms, a feeling of dread dawning on him. He couldn’t place it but he could tell that something wasn’t right. Marcus turned to the floor length window or rather the large glass door meant to be a window, and frowned. He didn't remember opening it before he slept off but there it was, opened, allowing the cool night air to come in. That was probably why he felt some unease. Marcus stood up and walked to it, cautiously peeping to see if anyone was out on his balcony or maybe the wind pushed it wide open. He saw no one and chose to close the doors when his eyes noticed something that was very out of place. A red box.He looked around again, trying to see if the person that dropped this off was still around but h

  • Chapter Eighty-Four: ONE CHAPTER CLOSED

As one relevant gunshot resounded in the large warehouse, a body dropped and blood spilled all over. One of them had fallen. One of them had failed. One of them had won.As Davon laid on the ground withering in pain due to the gunshot wound in his right shoulder that removed the gun in his hand, Marcus let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. Even though he was in slight shock at the fact that he had actually shot a person, he didn't let his guard up and kept on pointing his gun at Davon as he walked closer and kicked the nearest weapon on the floor away from the man. He was too dangerous to leave a weapon around even though he was wounded severely. “Bastard! I hope you're happy now.” Davon screamed at him, gripping onto his bleeding shoulder. “You have her and all the wealth that comes with her. Don't you already have enough? Are you that greedy?” Davon said, trying to provoke Marcus into making a mistake."Don't try to patronise me Davon. I'm the one who has a gun to your fa

  • Chapter Eighty-Three: THE FACE-OFF

Davon quickly pulled Rachel away from the front side of the building towards a huge truck. He turned around it and bent down, causing Rachel to do the same. He looked at her, slowly regretting his decision to bring her along.“Stay down and don't say anything. When the opportunity arises I'll get you out of here. You won't get caught." He grunted at her, willing her to listen to his words carefully. Like before Rachel had no idea what to say. She could only give him fervent nods, her mind going into overdrive when she realized that she was about to be in a shootout between the cops and the cartel. In all honesty it was a bit much for her to handle at the moment especially when she had never been in this situation before. It was jarring. As Rachel was trying not to have a panic attack due to her predicament, a voice rang out through the building. He was using a megaphone.“Come out with your hands up and weapons on the ground. We know how many of you are in there and who exactly runs

  • Chapter Eighty-Two: AN AMBUSH

Several days had passed and still Rachel and Marcus kept in contact with one another. They spoke everyday with Marcus, his family and Lori combing through every piece of video or feed they could get from her time with Davon. Once Rachel entered the Black mansion she was met with love and care but only one person showed her none of those. Alexandra Black. She was not necessarily cold to Rachel, nor did she hate the girl but she did keep her at arm’s length especially after her son had told her that she escaped the Wei’s and in turn that Marcus of a runt. Hence, her distrust of the girl. Rachel had tried to get on the woman’s good side but so far nothing was working. She gave up and decided to focus her efforts on Davon. Someone who was already in her clutches. For the most part Rachel spent a lot of time with Davon, always asking questions and prying into his personal life. This had caused some certain situations to occur such as Davon reading a message wrongly and trying to make lov
