Ainslie sprang up to her feet after dwelling on what kind of outfit to wear. She thought of what party her family was hosting and went on the internet to check on it. She learnt that her father's international shares company had come up top two of the year of share sellers and was very excited. She rushed to her room and went through her clothes in the closet. She couldn't find anything new to wear but picked on a blue dinner gown which she had bought some months back.
By 6 pm, Bryson walked into the house and saw Ainslie appeared, looking all dressed up and ready to go out. He wondered if she was going to the bar again to get wasted.
"Ainslie, you're going out?"
"Obviously. I'm sure you're not blind."
"Where are you going? Please, don't tell me you're going to the bar to get wasted."
"You don't deserve an explanation from me. By the way, I'm actually going to a party my family is hosting tonight."
Bryson's lips parted and he stared at her, dazed.
"My father's international shares company got the top two position of the best share sellers in the country. My mother called me earlier and invited me over."
"But I think your Dad isn't going to be happy to see you. You know…"
"You know nothing so you just listen to me, Bryson. My father has no issue with me coming there.. I'm his jewel. You just have to look your best tonight."
"Pardon me, but I don't understand what you're saying, Ainslie."
"Stop acting like a dimwit. You're coming along with me to the party."
Bryson shook his head in disapproval. He knew her family didn't like him a bit and they probably won't be happy to see him at the party.
"I'm sorry I can't come along. I'm sure my presence won't be welcomed at the party."
"Yes, no one will care about you because you're a nobody, Bryson. Nonetheless, you're coming along because unfortunately for me, I'm your wife and I need you to escort me to the party."
"But your family is likely to humiliate me again. I really don't think I should come, Ainslie. Please just go. I'm a bit tired and I need to rest."
"Bryson, please don't get on my nerves this time.m," Ainslie requested, almost yelling. "I don't want to hear any other freaking excuse. Just go in there l, freshen up and put on something good so we can leave for the party," she ordered. She sat down and crossed her legs, admiring her new polished nails.
Bryson contemplated on what to do. When she lifted her head and saw him still standing, she attempted to shout but he stopped her."
"Don't worry. I'm going to freshen up now, Ainslie."
"Good. The party is starting by 7 pm, so get ready quickly."
"Alright," Bryson said. He waited for some seconds, thinking she would ask him how his first day at work went but she didn't.
"Bryson, will you start heading to the room? We don't have much time," she said and he left for the room.
After fifteen minutes, Bryson emerged, clad in a black suit and a bowtie. Ainslie examined him from head to toe before standing up and they both left the house.
When they got out of the house, Ainslie stood by the side of the road, waiting for an upcoming Uber.
"Why are we waiting here?" Bryson asked. She eyed him and hissed.
"We need to get there, right? We can't trek down to my father's house. I hope an Uber shows up soon."
"An Uber? Why should we take an Uber?"
Ainslie straightened up and turned to face him. "What are you trying to say?"
"We don't need an Uber or a taxi. We can just take the public transport. We are still going to get to your father's house."
"Really? A public transport? Me and you? Are you crazy? I'm going to my father's house after a long while. I'm not going to some circus. We need to arrive there in an Uber so not everyone looks down at us."
"We'll pay twice as much if not more if we take an Uber. We can simply use the public transport. Just forget about what people would think."
"Oh. I see. Who are you? No, tell me who are you, Bryson? You're a mere human. You don't have a car nor are we staying in a nice apartment. I'm the daughter of a bloody wealthy tycoon and you want me to go to my father's house on public transport? Hell no. We will arrive there in an Uber. I know you're shameless but I'm nothing like you. Forget the fact we are a couple now, you'll always be below me and you'll never wish to rise up. It's so pathetic, Bryson."
"Ainslie…"
"Wait, hold on, did I hear you correctly earlier? You said we'll pay two times as much for an Uber? Who and who? You certainly don't have any penny with you to even take the public transport and you're trying to tell me what to do? You're a joker. You better get things straight. You need to act well at the party."
"What do you mean?"
"You know what I mean. Don't show you're a low class destitute there. Compose yourself, please."
Bryson opened his mouth to talk but she returned her gaze to the road, not giving him a chance. She stopped an Uber heading to them and both entered the car. She told the driver the address of her father's house and he took them there.
When the driver arrived at the gate of her father's house, he stopped the car and they got out after Ainslie paid him the fare.
Bryson looked around and shook his head.
"Gosh, I don't have much now and it's thanks to my husband."
"You know, we could have taken a public transport and you could have saved some dollars."
"Just shut up. You don't tell me what to do. I'll do as I please with my money. You don't even have any cent with you. Count yourself lucky that I'm not penniless like you. Let's go in."
She turned to face the gate which was suddenly opened by two guards who welcomed them. Bryson stared at the mansion that appeared in front of them. It was a big house that he had always dreamed to live in and wanted to tell Ainslie his desire of owning such a house but he knew she wouldn't like to know.
Ainslie got into the yard and quickly took out her phone and arranged her hair, checking out her makeup through the phone screen.
She held Bryson's hand with a long face which brightened up when they were reaching the huge back lawn where the party was taking place.
When they stepped into the lawn, Ainslie's gaze first caught her mother talking to a friend. She waved at her mother when she glanced at her and headed to where she was with Bryson whose eyes went around.
"Hello, Dear."
"Mom. Good evening," Ainslie said and her mother hugged her.
"Good evening, mother-in-law," Bryson said. Ainslie's mother glanced at him and looked away. He took a step forward to hug her but she took two steps backwards and smiled at her friend who gave her a weird look.
"This is Ainslie, right?" The woman asked and Ainslie's mother nodded.
"Good evening, ma'am."
"Good evening dear. You look really pretty, Ainslie."
"Thanks for the compliment, ma'am."
"Oh, you're welcome. This is your husband?"
Ainslie glanced at Bryson and nodded. The woman nudged her mother with her elbow and said.
"Oh, Rose, you've got a really handsome son-in-law."
Ainslie's mother chuckled. "Unfortunately, his bank account isn't handsome."
Bryson stared at her, feeling embarrassed and she eyed him, rudely.
Bryson felt hurt by what his mother-in-law said. He understood well what she meant by his bank account not being 'handsome', she ironically stated that he was poor and he felt more hurt when he saw his wife still smiling like her mother hadn't said anything wrong."What do you mean, Rose?" Her mother's friend asked and looking at his mother-in-law, he knew she really wanted to tell her friend that he was a pauper and humiliate him more but she couldn't because she knew her image would be stained too. "Don't mind me," his mother-in-law simply said and smiled."Hello, how're you?" The woman said to Bryson and he glanced at his wife."Good evening ma'am. Nice to see you. I'm Bryson," he introduced himself."Nice to meet you, Bryson. Uh, tell me. What do you do?""I'm actually a deliv….""He works as a manager of a company," Ainslie interrupted him and when he looked at her, astonished, she gave him a you- must- be- crazy look. He couldn't believe she would lie about his job."Oh. You've
Bryson could see the big fear in his wife's eyes after what Miranda said. He knew her sister wanted to humiliate them the most and that's why she had come after them and overheard what Ainslie had said."I feel father would congratulate you, Ainslie. What do you think, Bryson?" Miranda asked and he ignored her. "This is a very good news. I'll go tell father and…""Please, don't, Miranda," Ainslie said, grabbing her sister's hand. "Do not do that, please. I would owe you for life if you just keep this one big secret from the others."Bryson was stunned by his wife's request. He couldn't believe that she wanted to keep on lying about his job position. He felt more annoyed when she clasped her hands in front of her sister."What's wrong with him being a delivery guy? It is a good job, Ainslie. Don't worry. The others would be happy to know your husband's job.""No! He's a common delivery guy working in a new paint factory. It's going to get really bad for me if the others get to know abo
Aislie stepped on the lawn and looked around for a good table. She saw her parents and other relatives standing by different tables, welcoming and having a light chat with some of the guests. She couldn't bring herself to go and mingle with them let alone go and say hi to some of the families she knows. Her eyes caught a table in the middle of the lawn and she went there to sit. When she sat down, her eyes wandered around and when she saw her sisters almost looking in her direction, she ducked her head and let out a curse word. She looked up and saw her friend Julie. Julie walked up to her and took a seat with a frown on her face."How're you doing, friend?" Aislie asked but Julie simply rolled her eyes, ignoring her. "What's wrong with you, Julie? You know I'm really upset now and you better not anger me the more by giving me that ugly look. What's your problem and what are you doing here?"Julie flicked a stare at her and her frown deepened. "What do you mean by 'What are you doing
Bryson couldn't believe what was happening. He looked around and caught Dulgad and Miranda laughing at him then it struck him. It's possible that they could have been keeping a close eye on him and sorting out the right opportunity to humiliate him. He couldn't believe they would go this far as to give him a public disgrace. When he arose, looking at his wife, he could clearly see the lines of fury in her face. He just didn't know what to say or how to convince her at the moment. As the murmurings and mocking chuckles increased, Ainslie prayed so badly within her that the earth shattered and swallowed her. She couldn't face the shame."Oh, Bryson." Both heard Miranda say and shifted their gazes to her as she walked up to them with Dulgad. "What got into you?" She asked."I guess you didn't have much. Tell me, are you really hungry?" Dulgad asked, scornfully."Come on, brother, look at him. Does Bryson look well-to-do to you? He doesn't. He looks like a real bum who couldn't wait to sa
Bryson couldn't believe what his wife had just done. He dipped his hand into his pocket but only some coins came out from the pockets. He had nothing left with him.He thought of how he was going to go home. He thought of going in to ask for some bucks from Julie who he knew was likely to give it to him but he shoved the thought aside when he thought of what his in-laws will say or how they will react when he goes back there. And he knew for certain that Ainslie wasn't going to be happy to know that he had borrowed some money from her friend, Julie. He had no other way and solution so he decided to start trekking down to the house as he thought of a way to solve the problem he had created earlier. He recalled his father-in-law's insults and couldn't help but feel disheartened. He thought his wife was going to stand up for him at least once but she didn't even chide her sister, Miranda or Dulgad but Insulted him more in their presence. He felt greatly embarrassed. He knew her father ne
Bryson staggered back in shock by what his wife had uttered. He couldn't believe she would utter such a word. He wondered why she had turned so cold and insensitive. He questioned himself if she was the Ainslie he had strolled in the neighborhood with after their marriage, the Ainslie who adored him, the Ainslie who didn't nag much as she was doing now, the Ainslie who never hit him, the Ainslie who selflessly married him for their bond. So many things ran through his head in shock. "Ainslie," he mentioned, trying hard to fight back his tears. He held her arms and peered into her eyes. "I'm Bryson." "Oh." "Yeah. The same man you married a month ago. The same man you've spent over three years with under the same roof. It's me, Bryson." "B…Bryson?" She uttered and slowly raised up her hand. Bryson saw a flicker of recognition in her eyes and he smiled when she placed her hand on his face. "You are a sore loser!" She yelled and pushed his face away. He was greatly marveled. For a w
Bryson hadn't thought about that for a while. A few months ago, Ainslie had talked to him about getting a loan to have a befitting wedding. He didn't want that but she got the loan documents ready and convinced him to take the loan while she stands as his guarantor. On her quest, he had applied and gotten a loan of fifty thousand dollars. He recalled why she wanted their wedding to be a lavish one and a look of disappointment and devastation appeared in his eyes which he tried to hide. "Don't tell me you've forgotten about the loan, you prick," she cursed him with a thundering tone. Bryson didn't want to but he felt it would be best if he reminded her of her reasons for pushing him to take a loan for their wedding. "My love, it's not my fault, you know," he defended himself but that was a wrong Idea of his. He later regretted spilling that. Ainslie stared at him for a while in astonishment and chuckled. "Oh my dear husband, it really isn't your fault right? It's my fault. Right? O
As his mother-in-law stared at her, Bryson swallowed a lump, his Adam's apple moving up and down uncontrollably. He couldn't meet up to her gaze as she stared at him with a sign of disgust. "G.. Good morning, m..mo…mother-in-law," he stammered and her brows knitted more to a frown."Don't you ever address me like we've got a connection. I really don't see you as anyone I know. I can't believe I'm here in such a neighborhood like this one.""Um, sorry, ma'am. Please come in," Bryson said, trying not to stutter again. He made way for her and ogled at him in a dismissive way. "It's quite cold out here so please, kindly come inside the house and take warmth.""I should step into this cabin you call a house?" She asked him. He couldn't say a word and she exhaled and looked above her shoulder at a woman standing opposite the house. She was their neighbor and Bryson could tell just by a glance that she was wondering how such a woman like Ainslie's mother would be here to see me. "It seems t
