Chapter 19

In the days leading up to the party, Ruby was a whirlwind of activity. She was busy planning every last detail, and she left Derrick no choice but to obey her every command. He felt like a puppet, being pulled around by her strings. Every time he tried to speak up, she shut him down. He was reduced to simply following her orders, doing as he was told. He felt like a shadow of himself, his own identity slowly disappearing.

In a small act of rebellion, Derrick decided to wear his old clothes to the party, instead of buying new ones as Ruby had demanded. He dug through his closet, finding the least wrinkled and stained clothes he could find. Then he set about the task of ironing them, doing his best to make them presentable. He knew it was petty, but he couldn't help himself. He felt like he had to do something to assert his independence, even if it was something small.
