Chapter 31

Derrick pulled into the driveway, his heart pounding. He had no idea what he would find when he went inside. Will Ruby be there, waiting to talk to him? Or would the house be empty, a reminder of everything that had gone wrong?

He took a deep breath and got out of the car, steeling himself for whatever lay ahead. He walked to the front door, his hand shaking as he turned the key in the lock. The door opened with a soft click, and he took a step inside.

As Derrick stepped inside, he saw Ruby standing in the living room with a man he didn't recognize. The man was tall and muscular, with dark hair and a deep voice. Derrick's heart sank as he realized what this must mean. Ruby had replaced him with this man, and he was just now finding out.

"You're back," Ruby said coldly. "I need you to go and take a shower. You smell like the police station."

Derrick felt humiliated, his eyes scanning the strange man. He turned and ran to the bathroom, slamming the door behind him.
