"I can't do it," she blurted as soon as he answered the call. The line was silent for the next five minutes.

"Lance? Can you hear me? Why are you silent?" Her voice cracked. A ball of nerves formed in her throat as she waited for him to reply.

"Lance? Lance…"

"Stop calling my name, I'm not fucking deaf!" He snapped and she shuddered.

Another minute of silence followed. Her heart hammered against her as she waited for him to speak again. Beads of sweat formed on her forehead and without realizing it, she'd held her breath.

"I knew you choosing me was too good to be true. You just needed to see Zade to realize your true feelings for him, right? It's all good."

Lance's dismissal of the case was surprising. Roselua knew better than to rejoice. Surely the man had some sort of backup plan and she needed to buy Zade time to get his things and get out of the freaking country.
