The next day, Zade glanced impatiently at his watch as he walked outside the court.
The divorce had taken longer than he anticipated even when there was no share in property.
He wanted nothing to do with the Harpers, not even their money.
They twisted the story, just as he'd expected to gain favour in the public eye.
They claimed he was a gold-digger who was ripping off their daughter of her hard earned money.
Zade didn't argue their claims. They could do and say whatever they wanted as long as he was free from the humiliating union.
Roselia on the hand, felt guilty to no end.
A part of her curious as to why he didn't defend himself, the other selfish part was grateful he didn't expose her infidelity to the public.
When their union was officially severed, Roselia felt a deep sense of loss.
Zade walked out of the court after their session ended without sparing her as much as a glance.
"Zade?" He stopped when he heard Roselia's voice. He kept his face neutral as he faced her.
"Uhmm… since we are divorced now, I was wondering…" Roselia's voice trailed into nothing as she considered her next line of words.
"You can go ahead and marry your Ryan. Wasn't that the plan? To marry him immediately I sign the papers. Why are you wasting your time with me? Is your wedding dress yet to arrive?" He cut in and her cheeks flamed with mortification.
"There is no need to be so rude. I just wanted to offer you a ride," she retorted.
Zade shot her a wary glance. He wasn't mentally ready to share the same space with her.
"I'm fine. I can take a cab," he declined, turning away from her.
"I insist. Please let me drop you off," she pleaded.
Zade glanced at his watch once more. If he wasted any more time arguing with her, he would be late for his afternoon shift. Finding a cab would be harder.
"Fine, thanks."
The ride was silent with Roselia stealing multiple glances at him and structuring her words carefully in her head.
Zade noticed the heated glances she sent his way but chose to stare out the window.
He wasn't sure anything she planned to say would change their situation and frankly, he had nothing to say to her either.
He just wanted to get to his workplace on time.
Roselia suddenly jammed the brakes, startling them both.
Zade glanced worriedly between her and the road.
"What happened? Did you hit someone? Are you okay?" He asked, unbuckling his seatbelt to assess the damage.
He froze the minute her hand rested on him.
"I didn't hit anyone. I… I just wanted to apologize," she said timidly.
An unimpressed frown settled on his handsome features.
"You couldn't apologize in a less dramatic way?" He muttered, with a detached gaze.
His disinterest in the conversation pushed Roselia to rush her words.
"I know I caused you pain and I sincerely apologize for that. You are a good man, Zade. You have been nothing but a great husband to me…"
"But Ryan Myers was greater, point noted," He scoffed, taking her hands off him.
She was taken aback. She decided to let it slide and took out a credit card.
"Here. There should be enough to help you get an apartment in another city as well as feed you until you get a job," She told him, but Zade didn't make any move to take it.
"Zade, look, Ryan has not forgiven you for what happened back at his office. He will find a way to get his revenge one way or the other. I don't want that to happen, I want you to leave, please," she pleaded.
Ryan Myers was a very vengeful man.
He might not be skilled in a physical fight, but he was an expert at ruining people's lives.
Zade was the last person she wanted as his victim.
"We are divorced and that means you have no say in my business. Concentrate on pleasing your new fiance and staying faithful to him. It would be a shame to make a repeat of this," Zade said indifferently, not caring how much his words hurt her.
She wasn't as promiscuous as he portrayed her.
She was just an ambitious woman, willing to do everything in her power to achieve the money and influence she so desired.
She wouldn't change her actions for anything. Zade was not the stepping stone she needed to her goal.
He was more like a stumbling block.
She only felt guilty for hurting him in her quest to fulfill her desires.
"You can say whatever you want to me. Please accept this money and leave for the sake of peace," Roselia pleaded once more.
"I appreciate your kind gesture but I don't want your money and I am not going to leave the city simply because you asked me to," He stated, reaching for the door handle but Roselia grabbed his arm.
"Please don't leave yet. I know you're still angry with me and I want to make amends," she scooted closer, "I want you to make love to me, Zade, one last time. I don't want you resenting me for the rest of your life. I'm willingly offering my body to you, do whatever you want to do with it, as long as you leave for your safety."
Roselia hoped he would at least consider her offer. Perhaps his bitterness towards her made him fixated on facing Ryan instead of running.
"Get your filthy hands off me! Aren't you ashamed of yourself? Just look at you, shamelessly trying to get down with your ex-husband when you have a fiance," Zade grimaced.
"You cheated on me with him, now you want to cheat on him with me, as well? You are truly despicable!"
Tears stung her eyes as his harsh words resounded in her ear. His voice, laced with hate and disgust.
"Zade, please listen to me…" he smacked her hands off him.
"Don't you dare touch me! You disgust me!"
"It's really not what you think, I swear. I haven't laid with another man while we were together. I have been faithful to you. My relationship with Ryan, you are misunderstanding everything. I didn't sleep with him, I swear, I didn't," she sniffled, suppressing a sob but Zade couldn't care less.
"I don't care about your stupid explanations. I have given you your wish so do me a favor and let me be. Have a great day," Zade replied coldly and she reached to kiss him.
He turned his face quickly, evading the kiss, and pushing her back at the same time.
The action stung Roselia. Zade usually adored her kisses.
Could it be that he was no longer attracted to her?
Was it possible for love to die that fast?
Two days ago, she could have sworn he couldn't live without her.
The Zade she knew would go to any length just to make her happy. He loved her that much.
Now, she wasn't sure anymore. The eyes that once gazed at her with were replaced with disdain.
"Zade…" Her voice cracked as he opened the door.
Once upon a time, those tears would move him to grant her wishes but now, he saw them as nothing but deceit.
Roselia's betrayal cut deep into him.
He wasn't sure he would ever forgive her for that.
His love for her wasn't completely dead, but he'd be damned if he succumbed to it.
He got out of the car and slammed the door shut, walking away without looking back at the woman who ripped his heart apart.
Tears rolled effortlessly down her cheeks as she watched the man who loved her unconditionally, walk away.
By the time Zade arrived at his workplace to take the new set of orders, he was shocked to see a police vehicle. He couldn't help but wonder why there were officers at the Company. As soon as he got in, his boss signaled the Officers and they grabbed Zade suddenly."Why are you cuffing me? What did I do?" He asked, disbelief laced through his voice. The officers were more interested in cuffing him than answering his questions. He was going to call them out for cuffing him without telling him his offence when his boss, Philips, walked over to him, eyes coated with accusation. "The nerve of you to ask that. My strongbox is missing and all evidence points to you. You came to my company begging for a job with no qualifications and I offered you one out of the goodness of my heart. What did you do in return? You had the audacity to steal from me!" Phillips accused. "Strongbox? I have nothing to do with the disappearance of your strongbox. I'm only a dispatch rider. I have no business wit
Zade was taken into a private room for questioning. He sat on the chair they pulled for him, resting his cuffed hands on the table. The room was barely illuminated so he could barely make out their faces. All he could tell was that there were three officers in the room. "Zade Harper," He heard his name. "We've heard a lot about you."Zade's senses became alert at that moment. What more could they know about him other than the fact he 'allegedly' stole his boss's strongbox? 'Care to share?' The question was at the tip of his tongue, begging to be released but waved it off. It wasn't worth the stress. His priority was to prove his innocence and get those uncomfortable cuffs off his wrist. "Do you know the items in that box are worth five hundred thousand dollars?" Zade was tempted to roll his eyes at the ridiculously small amount. He couldn't imagine his grandfather's reaction if he ever found out he was arrested for an amount he gave to children for treats. "And you just a mere
In the torture room, Zade was covered with bruises and bound to a chair to prevent him from defending himself. His nose was broken, and a heavy blood clot on his busted lips and swollen cheeks."You seem to be enjoying this better than we do," The statement was accompanied by a punch in his gut.Zade let a low growl, gritting his teeth together at the intense pain. "You must have high pain tolerance."Another punch.Zade's head fell over as he took shallow breaths. He felt an exhilarating pain as they grabbed a fistful of his hair and yanked his face up."You don't have to go through this. Your stubbornness will do you no good at this point. Just admit you stole the box and we can work things out amicably," The officer offered. "Fuck you!" Zade spat in his face, earning another punch in the face. "Is that the best you've got?" He grunted amidst the pain. The officers were shocked by his arrogance. For a poor man who owned nothing other than his life, his ego was over the moon. "
When Zade got off the torture seat, everything about him felt different. Those soft honey-brown eyes were hardened like ice as he threw his tormentors a glance that sent spirals of fear through them. The man was exhilarating a dominant aura that made everyone cower.“I know who ordered the arrest,” his tone matched his eyes, icy and sharp. “Ryan Myers and William Harper. Are you going to deny that?” The four swallowed thickly, looking helplessly at each other. Elizabeth turned to the Chief police, “You heard him. I want those two behind bars for attempting such a stupid stunt. As for them…” her eyes shifted to the four in a deadly glance, “I want them to suffer greatly for everything they did to him. I want them jailed and tortured for attempted murder.”Their eyes went wide with panic.“But ma’am…” The chief tried to plead on their behalf but the agitated look on her face forced him to keep shut.“Any attempt to flaunt my order, I promise you will lose your job. Trust me, you don
Roselia walked into the ward cautiously, afraid to deal with confrontation from Elizabeth. Fortunately, the woman was not in the ward when she stepped in. It was just Zade lying on the bed with his eyes closed. She approached him as quietly as she could so as not to wake him. Before she could get close enough, his eyes flew open. Roselia froze on the spot, unsure of what to do. The honey-brown eyes raked through her with an intensity that forced her to hold her breath. For several minutes, she waited for him to say something. When he didn’t, she released her breath and straightened her dress nervously. Her eyes dropped below his face because she was too cowardly to look him in the eye, but when she saw his injuries and the bandages, something stirred within her.She couldn’t believe William had been the architect of such serious damage. Her heart bled for Zade, she couldn’t even imagine the torture him to. Roselia bit her lip anxiously. She wanted to apologize on William’s behalf wi
“Are you sure you want to be discharged? Your wounds are still fresh?” Elizabeth asked worriedly. Zade didn’t mention the events of earlier to her. He didn’t want any more unnecessary attention.“Is the house ready?” He asked, instead. Her emerald eyes furrowed at him, searching his eyes thoroughly. Zade let out a sigh, “I’ll take treatment for home. I’m just uncomfortable here. You know how much I detest hospitals.”She seemed to buy his explanation because the intensity of her stare lessened. “Fine, then. I’ll sign the papers and have you discharged. The maids should be done with most of the cleaning by now. You know the house has never been inhabited,” Elizabeth told him.“Thanks, Liz,” Zade smiled.“I still can’t imagine how you survived as a dispatch rider for that long. Your current account doesn’t have up to five thousand dollars,” She said, heading for the door. He couldn’t give a rep[ly because she was already out of the door.He relaxed in the hospital bed, staring at the
Roselia clasped her trembling hands together, shutting her eyes with a silent prayer. After submitting the form, the employees were called one after the other to the CEO's office. She didn't know what to expect, but she was sure of getting fired one way or the other. Either because the employees picked her or because Zade wanted revenge. She paced around in her office, anxiously. She couldn't afford to lose her job. It took so much from her to build her career to where it was. "Mrs Harper, please report to the CEO's office immediately."Roselia swallowed thickly as the intercom sounded all over the building. Taking a deep breath, she stepped out of her office ignoring the eyes that followed every step she took. She decided to use the stairs to delay whatever was waiting for her behind those doors. Her feet came to a stop outside the CEO's office. Her trembling hands barely made it to the door before it opened to reveal Elizabeth. Roselia blinked twice. She wasn't aware of the woma
Roselia returned home dejected. She couldn't believe that everything she built in the last three years was gone in a twinkle of an eye. Tears stung her eyes. This wasn't the life she planned for herself. Why was fate messing with her? Whilst she was still married to Zade, he had nothing. He was just a poor man with a useless job. Just when she found a more suitable man and divorced him, he became CEO of her company. Life had been so unfair to her. She sniffled and made her way to the bar to grab a drink. Hopefully, she would drink and forget all her sorrows. Roselia was on the second glass when her mother returned. "Rose?" Mrs Harpers called the minute she sighted the girl. Uncertainty and worry crossed her face when Rose didn't respond. She hurried to the bar, "Talk to me, dear. Why are you drinking at this time?" "Life has been so unfair to me, Mom," Roselia's voice cracked. "One minute, my future looks bright and promising, the next, it's a dark fog of misfortunes.""I don
