The sun was just beginning to dip below the horizon as Denver was driving the old Volkswagen down the bustling city street. He called Sheryl’s mobile. This time, it rang, but she didn’t pick it up.

Moments later, he received a text message: My mission got extended. I’ll be there soon, so please wait patiently. Love you, Boss.

“What mission is it?” Denver sent a text message back.

“Can’t tell you. Sorry,” she replied.

“Huh, am I not your boss?”

“Haha. Good try. But please don’t disturb me. I’m on a jet that’s on a ship right now. That’s all I can tell you. Bye.”

“A plane on a ship?” Denver was confused. “Is she on some kind of a war ship or something? What exactly is her job?”

Just as the car turned a corner, he was forced to stop the car. A pack of thugs were harassing two ladies passing by, their menacing scowls illuminated by the fading sunlight.

Denver just watched from inside his car as they laughed and took the handbags from the ladies, but they didn’t seem satisfied with that. T

The birthday party of the six-year-old Terry Clarke was being celebrated grandly at the Stellar Convention, where they would charge anywhere from 250,000 dollars to 2 million dollars depending on the number of guests and the event.Because this was a prestigious birthday party where big guests from all around the city would be visiting, Sage Clarke paid a million dollars for the event.Bianca was waiting outside the convention, standing next to her luxury blue Audi sedan. Many guests who were arriving there couldn’t help but notice this tall woman dressed in red clothing. She looked like an angel. The women had to remind their men to not look at her. She was such a stunning beauty with her golden brown hair and a polished white look of someone who doesn’t spend much time under the sun.“He’s late,” Bianca looked at her platinum watch worth 150 grand. “He better not make a fool out of me by skipping this party. After what I’ve done for him… Mm?” Just then, she noticed an old red car in

“A cheap man will only know how to give cheap gifts,” Diane snorted, flaunting her dazzling yellow dress that caught people’s attention. “Let me show you what a real gift looks like.”She handed a gift box which was bigger than Denver’s.Terry didn’t care about Diane’s insults toward Denver. He only cared about the gift box, so he hurriedly opened it.However, he found a small box inside. He opened the small box, and there was a key inside.“What’s this key for?” Terry asked her.Diane looked at Stephen who snapped his fingers. Two workers brought a mini car into the hall.“It can go up to 25 kilometers per hour, and it runs on battery, so you can just recharge it,” Diane said. “It cost just 20,000 dollars.”Sage was clearly impressed by the gift. He looked at Stephen. “Did your dad send this?”Stephen glanced at Diane. “She picked this gift.”“Oh…” Sage’s gaze shifted to Diane. “May I know your name, Miss?”“Diane Palmer,” she replied and shook Sage’s hand. “My father used to work in

Diane didn’t give any extra details or explanation about what exactly led to Richard’s death, and she walked away with Stephen.Sage couldn’t help but wonder, “Is he not a trustworthy person then?” he was beginning to wonder if he shouldn’t have actively started working on Denver’s project. “Moving forward, I should be more careful with him.”“What did he do to your father?” Stephen asked Diane.“I’d rather not talk about it right now,” Diane replied.Stephen could see anger in her face. (There’s something that happened between them which I didn’t know of. No wonder she cheated on him, huh. I guess she’s not like the other bitches I hang around with. She’s smart and worth hanging around.)Diane, on the other hand, took her mobile out. She started sending text messages to her sister.“What are you doing, Catty?” Diane asked, but there was no reply. “Do you want to know what your man is doing right now? He came to a party. A rich man’s party, so why didn’t he bring you along?”Catherine

Denver came to the side to talk with Catherine privately. “What do you mean she’s pregnant?”“It means what I said,” Catherine replied fast. “And she’s claiming that you’re the dad.”Denver felt a chill crawling throughout his body. “Whoa, whoa, that’s crazy. Did she really say that?”“My mom even came to my flat, and she fumed over the issue,” Catherine said. “If you were here at that time, she would have hit you.”Denver’s heart started racing. “C-Catherine, you don’t believe Diane’s words, do you?”“I didn’t believe her, but after seeing these pictures, I’m feeling doubtful!” Catherine didn’t hesitate to speak these words. “Instead of taking me to the party, why did you go with some other lady? And you’re even holding hands. That makes no sense to me.”“I will explain everything to you once I get home,” Denver said.“Are you the father or not?” Catherine asked bluntly.“Of course, I’m not the father,” Denver quickly responded. “I didn’t even kiss her once, so how can I be the fathe

Denver wanted to ask Bianca about the governor, but he completely forgot about it after Catherine’s phone call.As he was planning on leaving home, he heard Bianca say, “The chief guest isn’t here yet.”“The chief guest? Who?”“Governor Gerard,” Bianca smiled. Her real reason for coming here was to meet the governor.Denver had to change his plans after that. He waited for the governor to come.Sage’s grandson, Terry, on the other hand, did not care about other gifts anymore. He was busy driving the mini jeep that Diane had gifted to him.Terry drove the car everywhere, and nobody dared to complain about him, even though some people were scared for their own lives and for the kid’s life, too, as he was driving a bit recklessly.“How can Mr. Sage let his grandson drive that car?”“Yeah, he lost his son and daughter-in-law in an accident, so he should know better!”Sage could hear some of their words, but he didn’t care. “The day we are born, and the day we die are predetermined, so it’

Gerard and Sage ate food together at a table, and many guests came to greet them. But none of them took much of their time. They only gave the greetings and left within a few seconds.Diane didn’t want to miss this opportunity, so she grabbed Stephen’s arm. “Let’s go and greet the governor.”“Are you crazy? That’s the governor of the state,” Stephen said. “He’s not someone a gangster like me should approach. Even my dad won’t feel easy around someone like that.”“He may be a governor, but aren’t you richer than him?” Diane said. “Money is what matters the most in this world. So, I’m sure he’ll talk with us respectfully once he knows who you are.”Stephen’s ego swelled a little, thanks to her words. And he gained the confidence to go and talk to the governor.“If we want to make an impression that will last in his mind, we can’t just go empty-handed like others,” Diane said. “Do you have anything of value?”“Why don’t we just steal one of the gifts from others? That brat didn’t even op

“Nighthawk?” Diane didn’t recognize that name. “What sort of family name is that? It sounds like a bird's name, doesn’t it? So stupid.”Gerard spared her a cold glance, making her shut her mouth.Diane looked at Stephen. “Why do you look like you stepped on poop?”However, Stephen was in his own world and did not hear what Diane was even saying. His mind was focused on something else right now. (Nighthawk? I feel like I heard that name before. Or is it just my imagination?)“Denver what?” Denver looked a bit confused himself. He felt like he heard the name before, and it surprised him for a second, but he didn’t remember anything in particular. “Do you know me?”“Mm?” Gerard’s expression changed.“You must have mistaken him for someone else, Governor,” Diane stepped in. “He’s just a construction worker with no background.”“Construction worker?” Gerard looked surprised now. (Is he on a mission now?) “Maybe, I really am mistaken.”Denver wanted to talk with the governor some more, but

Denver did not expect to be hugged by her, but his body definitely reacted wildly. He forcibly pushed her away, and she couldn’t do anything against him.Diane fell back on the floor and cried, “Aw!” she bore the pain and said, “How could you do this to the woman who loved you and is about to give birth to your child?”Denver took his mobile out. “I’m calling the cops,” even though he said that, he started recording with the mobile, but he didn’t make it obvious.“Huh, sure. Go ahead and call them. They will say it’s a family matter and will tell us to deal with it ourselves,” Diane shamelessly said.“We are not family. Not anymore,” Denver retorted and walked out of the hall.Diane followed him. “No matter what you say, you are the father of my child. That won’t change.”Denver stopped and raised his hand, wanting to slap her.Diane didn’t back away. “C’mon, hit me. Do this and become a villain to the public. It will make things easy for me when the police do come here.”“Tsk, I ne

After talking with the governor, Denver personally escorted him to the car. “Please look into the dumpyard land I talked about, sir,” he reminded the governor.“Oh, I’ve already talked about it with the land management bureau, and you can consider that public land as yours,” Gerard broke the good news to him. “All you need to do is go to the register office and either lease it or register it, however you want.”“Thank you so much,” Denver went in for a hug, but the guard of the governor stopped him.“It’s fine,” Gerard stopped the guard and then shook Denver’s head. “It’s a pleasure and an honor to meet you. Though you’re so much younger than me, I wish I had your heart. I hope we meet again one day.”“I’ll be sure to meet you later,” Denver assured him. After the governor left, Denver came to his car.To his surprise, Diane was waiting for him, leaning her back against the black Mercedes as if she owned it.She showered a thin smile, but Denver didn’t reciprocate. The cool air of the

On his way home, Denver met the governor at a restaurant.“Edward Creamer is not as big as he used to be because of his partner betraying him,” Gerard told him while munching on steak. “But he’s still feared by his peers, not because of his strength but because of his ego. Once he focuses on something, he sees it through to the end. And I’m sure his focus is on you now.”Denver, however, was looking at the steak on the plate. “Can I pack this and also order an extra plate of steak to take home?”“Of course, you can, sir,” the waitress politely said. “Do you wish me to pack any more orders?”Denver then picked a dessert and along with an ice cream. After the waitress left, he looked at the governor and smiled, “I know Edward is dangerous, but I already did something to keep him in check.”“Do you have some dirt on him?” Gerard asked. “Can I see it?”“Uh, you might lose your appetite,” Denver scratched his chin.“Oh, it’s that kind of dirt, huh,” Gerard rolled his head once. “Don’t spar

No,” Diane played dumb. “Why are you in this hospital? Are you sick?”“Don’t pretend like you care for me, Diane,” Denver’s voice wasn’t cold, but it sure wasn’t warm, either. “What you did to me sure shocked me, but what you did to your sister is worse. However, you won’t be smiling for long.”“I wasn’t the one who destroyed that pool. It was Stephen,” she said. “I told him not to do it, but he did it anyway.”“You think I will believe anything that comes out of your mouth?” Denver calmly asked her back. “I’m sure you’re here because you are still trying to hook up with Stephen for whatever reason, but the longer you stay with that guy, the harder you will fall. A few minutes earlier.Diane hid in her car as the Creamer gang members were caught and were being taken away. However, one of the police officers recognized her Corvette and told his superior, “Sir, that’s Stephen Creamer’s car.”Diane saw the officers looking at her, and she started the engine and drove backward. The police chased her on foot, so she drove away fast and ended up hitting the road’s divider. “Shit! Fuck!” She still tried to drive away hurriedly, but the police quickly surrounded her car, leaving her no choice but to squeeze the brake pedal. The officers were about to attack the windows with their batons, but seeing Diane inside, they stopped attacking.“Open the door,” one officer growled.“W-Wait,” she grew so nervous she couldn’t even open the door properly. It was as if she forgot how to open the door. Eventually, she took a deep breath and then lowered the window instead of opening the door. “What’s wrong, officers?”“What’s wrong? Why are you in this car?” the of

A few minutes later. The special police arrived at the hospital, causing the gang members of Edward to scatter away. The police chased them and caught as many as they could.Inside the hospital, in a certain room.Stephen was getting treated on the bed. He still looked upset, angry, and frustrated. His dad was sitting next to him, looking like nothing happened. The doctor was tending to Stephen’s wrists.“It’s just a kiss. You kiss strangers all the time,” Edward said, smoking a cigar. “So, why are you upset over kissing your father?”Stephen felt like vomiting just thinking about it. “What if he leaks that picture on the internet? My image will be doomed. Our image will be doomed. The Creamer family will become a joke.”“If he releases that image, then that very same day, his corpse will be hung at our fish farm, too,” Edward said.“What’s the point of doing it after the damage is already done?” Stephen snorted. “You should just kill him now, Dad!”“He’s not just an ordinary guy with

The commotion inside the hospital was still there.Denver brought Edward to the room where Stephen was. To his surprise, Jeremy was still there.“Why are you still here?” Denver asked him in shock.“There are people running everywhere outside,” Jeremy said a bit embarrassedly. “My body is not in a condition to run. But, who’s that on your shoulder? Another patient?”“He’s Stephen’s dad,” Denver put him down next to Stephen and then began to kick Stephen in the gut. He was not gentle.Stephen’s eyes forced open. “Argh, you…” he glared at Denver, “you are still harassing me? When my dad catches you, I will tie you to a chair and have fun with you!”“Look beside you,” Jeremy said.“Mm?” Stephen looked next to him. His eyes sprang out of his sockets. “D-DAD?!” He couldn’t believe that his dad was lying next to him. “How? Who did this to him?”“We fought, and he lost,” Denver said, showing the gun to Stephen.“You beat my dad? That’s impossible,” Stephen blurted. “He was a champion in the

Catherine had a long, thirty minute ride in her car and returned to her apartment.“Wow,” one of the female neighbors saw her and asked in surprise, “did you buy a new car?”“It’s my old car,” Catherine flashed a grin free of burden and full of ease. “My man got this car restored to its new look.”“Your man?” She was visibly surprised. “Who? The big guy?”“Yeah.”“Oh. Don’t think of this the wrong way, Catherine, but don’t you think he’s way too out of your league?” she said. “I mean, guys like that don’t stay with women like us for long. Once he finds a woman with a better butt or boobs, he’ll move on.”Catherine frowned initially but then smiled a bit uneasily. “I never dated anybody. I never chased after love because it looked like an unending rat race to me.” She remembered the times when her friends shuffled boyfriends every season for stupid and silly reasons.Neither Catherine nor Diane were allowed to date anybody because their dad strictly forbade them. Diane considered this

Fluorescent lights flickered overhead, casting shadows that danced forbiddingly along the whitewashed walls of Harryfield hospital. The sterile smell of antiseptic hung heavily in the air, enough to upset any man into easily losing their cool.In the heart of such a hospital where chaos of a different kind has erupted, Denver was now ensnared in a lethal confrontation.Edward, the notorious head of the ruthless Creamer gang that ruled a part of the city’s underbelly, had a commanding presence. His eyes narrowed as they locked onto Denver, assessing the only figure standing defiant in that corridor.“A big body isn’t enough to fight against bullets, brat,” Edward’s voice was smooth but laced with venom as he put his hand under his suit and reached out for something. “You’ve got guts. I’ll give you that, but guts don’t win fights. Guns do.”The polished item Edward took out gleamed ominously in the overhead light.Denver recognized it at a glance and knew it was loaded with one of these

“Are you going to stay here and wait until my dad arrives?” Stephen asked in a mocking manner. “You acted like you were going to deal with anything that will come at you, but now that you’re seeing the king of the neighborhood, you’re thinking twice, aren’t you? It’s not too late. Fall at my dad’s feet and beg for mercy. He might let you live after severely punishing you, of course.”Denver took a deep breath and walked up to Stephen who was sitting on the chair.Stephen looked up with a cocky, proudful smirk on his face.“It seems just getting the wrists broken isn’t enough,” Denver slapped Stephen with the back of his hand.Stephen spun and crashed on the floor, chin first.“Huhu, you slapped his lights out,” Jeremy loved what he saw.“He was being pretty annoying,” Denver looked at Jeremy. “Can you move?”“I can manage. Why?”“Just in case someone else makes it to this room, you shouldn’t be here,” Denver said. “If possible, go home. Take your daughter and go somewhere else. Keep
