It was a resounding slap.

Catherine didn’t seem as surprised as she was hurt by the slap.

Even though Catherine had seen her mother’s hand coming, she didn’t evade.

Nevertheless, her eyes turned teary. “Thank you… Mom,” her voice cracked.

Subrina’s eyes were red, but her arm was shaking. She was already regretting what she had done.

“I definitely deserved this for talking back against you,” Catherine said. “As long as I’m in line with you, I’m a good daughter, but when my words don’t align with yours, then I’m the useless one. Thank you for not disappointing me. I’m certain now. You will never change.”

Catherine entered the car and drove away without her mother.

Subrina couldn’t even tell her daughter to wait for her. No words came out of her mouth right now.

Sia was watching all this from the entrance, and she looked shocked. “Catherine’s mom is crazier than her. How can she slap a grown daughter like that? Is Catherine going to complain to Denver and have him beat her mother?”

Catherine came to her apartment, driving fast. Her renovated car made it possible for her to drive fast and let out some fumes. She parked the car inside, but then she saw Denver working, filling up the cracks on the pillars and walls.“What are you doing?” she asked, looking genuinely confused.“I asked him to do it,” Layla, the apartment’s guard, came over to them quickly with a big smile on her face. “I heard that your boyfriend is a construction worker, so I thought he could make the apartment look better just like he made your car better.”“Uh, okay,” Catherine took it casually. “As long as he gets paid for his work, I don’t mind it. How much do you charge per hour, Denver?”“Thirty to fifty depending on the work,” Denver said. “But since it’s for our apartment, I’ll only charge twenty dollars.”“Actually, I’m not going to pay the hourly wages,” Layla scratched her jaw.“What?” Catherine was shocked.Even Denver looked just as shocked. He thought Layla was automatically going to

Denver was skillfully applying cement to the cracks, and he was on a flow. But he suddenly stopped because he saw something in one of those cracks. There were small white things. At first he didn’t think much, but then he used to brush to pull those white things out of the cracks.Upon observing them, he realized that they were lizard eggs. They were so tiny they looked adorable.Denver wondered what he should do with them. If he were to put these back in the cracks, then he wouldn’t be able to seal the crack. But if he were to put them outside, these eggs would probably crack. And the mother lizard was nowhere to be seen. After some thinking, Denver decided to leave some part of the cracks open and put the eggs back in there.Just as he was putting the eggs, Layla came from behind and grabbed his biceps. “Are these real?”The eggs almost fell from his palm. “Whoa, be careful.”“Mm? What’s wrong?”“There are lizard eggs in my hand. They could have fallen to the ground.”“Oh, I’m sorry

Denver came to the flat, opened the door and was entering. He had to lower his head to enter, but his head still ended up hitting the edge, making him hiss in pain.Catherine jumped out of the couch and rushed over. “Are you okay?”“Ugh, yeah,” Denver said, despite feeling like hot coffee was brewing on top of his head. He could feel vapors coming out. “I think so.”“Let me take a look,” Catherine said.Denver had to sit down on the couch so she could take a look at the wound. She couldn’t see it, so she kept touching his head and eventually found the swollen spot. “Wow, I can feel a bulge. It must be hurting.”“It does… a little,” Denver said.Catherine smiled. “Let me give you an instant treatment.”“Instant treatment? Such a thing exists?” Denver queried.Catherine then planted a kiss on the swollen spot. Denver felt it and smiled. She slid into the couch next to him and locked her fingers with him. “You said you’d take an hour, but you came early. What changed your mind? You didn’

Layla cleaned the dust off herself before coming back to her spot.It was evening. She was waiting for her son to bring her meal from home. “What’s taking him so long? Is he wasting time playing football with his friends again?”Just as she got angry, her nine-year-old son brought a bag to her, put it next to her and was leaving in a hurryLayla grabbed his shirt from behind. “Where are you hurrying off to without even giving a hug to your mom?”He quickly gave her a casual hug and was leaving. The noise of a car engine was heard by them.Within seconds, a thunder blue Lamborghini Aventador stopped right in front of the gate ever so smoothly.A long-dark haired girl wearing red-framed goggles was chewing on bubble gum.Layla stood up at once and went over to greet her. Her son was checking out the car with excitement.“Excuse me, ma’am,” Layla politely spoke. “Do you need something?” Upon getting closer, she could see that this young woman’s skin was so fair even with little makeup.L

Denver ran down the stairs quickly and reached the gate just as fast. There really was a lamborghini parked outside, but there was nobody in the car.Suddenly, he felt something behind him.He turned back, and Sheryl’s foot nearly struck his face. She was able to lift her foot that high and hold it there comfortably. “W-What are you doing?” Denver took a step back.“You felt my presence, but you couldn’t feel the attack coming,” Sheryl said, lowering her foot and taking a controlled breath. “It seems we’ll need to do a lot of duels for you to get your skills back.”“Duels? What’s the need for dueling?” Denver asked.“Because if you return like this, you could get killed in your sleep,” Sheryl replied.“H-Huh?” Denver was baffled. “Why would I be killed? Where are we going? I thought I would be returning to my family?”“Yeah, and your family is quite big and extremely dangerous,” Sheryl said with a poker face.“Dangerous? For whom?”“Don’t you remember all the times attempts were made

Later that night.Layla never returned to the room after the mishap.Catherine, Denver, and Sheryl were eating in the kitchen.“There’s no AC here,” Catherine said. “You might feel uncomfortable. Why don’t you go and book a five star hotel for the night?”“It’s fine. I’m used to all kinds of places,” Sheryl replied while eating corn dogs and chicken fried rice.Catherine made the chicken fried rice at home, but the other items were all ordered. They were all cheap and filling.Catherine thought Sheryl would make things difficult for her just like Sia, but nothing of the sort happened.Sheryl was a woman of few words. She didn’t seem any hostile toward Catherine in any form, even though Catherine did feel a bit of a threat from Sheryl’s gaze in the beginning.Catherine’s intuition still told her that Sheryl couldn’t be trusted.“Where are you going to take Denver afterward?” Catherine asked, nibbling on the meatloaf. “To his home?”“Yeah.”“Where is it?”“It is in a different state but

Diane was eating dinner with the Den bank manager at a fine restaurant. She wanted to get him drunk, but he refused to drink for the night, so she was losing her patience.“Will you pay the bill, or do you want me to take care of it?” Diane asked with a smile.“This is a five-star restaurant. What we ate will cost over a thousand dollars,” he said. “You still want to pay it?”As if waiting for this opportunity, she took the diamond card out and put it on the table. “I can pay with this.”The bank manager was startled to see that card. “I-Is that…”“Yeah, it belongs to my fiance,” Diane said.“W-What?” the manager was startled. “Didn’t you both fight each other at the bank that day?”“Yeah, but fighting is common between lovers,” Diane said.“He told you the password?”“Yeah. He did.”“Then he must really love you,” the manager smiled with a bit of jealousy.“Why wouldn’t he tell me the password when he’s not the card owner?” Diane said.“Mm? What do you mean? The vice president of the Den bank, Bianca Gozard, was having dinner with her dad.She had threatened him in order for him to put his work aside and meet her.“Why did you go out of your way to meet me, Darling?” Darrell Gozard asked. He was a fat man with wonderful slick back hair. His eating style was also quite refined and elegant as he treated himself like a noble.Bianca forced out a smile. “Don’t call me Darling. It doesn’t suit you anymore.”“You’re my precious daughter. Even if you turn sixty, you’ll still be my darling.”“If I’m really that precious, then why don’t you make me the president of the Den bank?”Darrell smiled. “I see. It must frustrate you that you don’t know much about the Den bank despite being the vice-president. But, trust me, it’s still a bit too early for you to know the truth.”“I can handle the truth, Dad,” Bianca snorted. “I’m not a kid. And I know that there are many shady things going on with our bank, especially with the five diamond card holders and

Anyway, I came here to give you the invitation card.”“Invitation card? For what?” Diane frowned.“Isn’t it obvious?” Joseph threw an envelope at her.She caught the envelope and opened it.To her utter bewilderment, it was a wedding invitation for the marriage of Peter Mason and Subrina Palmer.“What the fuck is this?” Diane couldn’t believe it.“Yeah. I had the same reaction when my dad said he’s going to marry your mother,” Joseph said, taking out a wine bottle from his car. “This makes us step-siblings. So, how about we share a drink and get to know each other? I’d like to know more about your sister, too. Is sh

Denver was practicing his Blood Arts using his personal manual which he had written in the past.Sheryl had kept it safe for him. There was a mosquito flying about in the room. It tried to land on Denver’s cheek, but the hot vapors didn’t let it touch Denver. As it flew away, its body suddenly blasted to bits.“The ability to affect the blood all around me. This is the art that needs more honing,” Denver thought. “With this ability, I can take on many enemies at a time. But…” He looked at his hand. “Will I be able to bear with all the blood that’s going to be spilled?”Blood Arts was actually part of the eight Hawker Arts, but thanks to Denver’s special blood lightning ability, he was able to take the Blood Arts to another level, making it even more deadly.“The reason I probably didn’t bother about mastering all the eight martial arts of Hawkers was because I focused more on Blood Arts,” Denver clenched his fists. “It can kill, but I wanted it to heal as well, making this not just a

She believed that was enough.Denver hissed a little and touched his knee as he sat down.“Is something wrong with your leg?” Catherine asked him.“My right knee hurts a little. That’s all,” Denver said, trying not to appear frustrated.“Let me check,” Catherine insisted.“It’s okay,” he politely refused.Catherine still pulled his pant leg which exposed his swollen knee. “Hurts a little, you say?” she squeezed his knee with her fingers, and he hissed. “Yeah. The clouds discharged sparks of lightning not toward the ground but onto each other, thereby lighting up the entire sky in Hawk Park.It was daytime, but it looked brighter than day itself as golden white lightning made the clouds and the sky look both beautiful and terrifying at the same time.Almost everybody in Hawk Park felt it. Some ran out of their homes to see this rare phenomenon where not a single drop of rain fell but lightning bolts crisscrossed heaven..Novick, who was playing with a tiny chameleon in his room, looked out through the window. “The clash of kings…”At Golden Tower.Lily was watching the sky from the balcony. “This presence… It seems the one fighting Mickey inside the cube was Denver. He’s catching up to us fast. If he survives today, he will become a force to be reckoned with.”She made a phone call and said, “Serena, the cube is broken. Make sure you kill at least Green Fang or Denver’s girlfriend.”“I was thinking of sneaking in and killing Denver though,”

“How are you able to conjure the power of white blood cells outside your body?” Mickey asked. The white lightning streaks around Denver’s fists thickened. “Maybe they just want to prevent my heart from getting sad.”“Is that so?” Mickey squinted his eyes. (His blood is reacting to his thoughts as if it has some level of sentience. It’s interesting, but it feels annoying, thinking about it.)“Why? Are you jealous that you can’t do it?” Denver asked with a serious expression. He was just trying to understand what kind of a person Mickey was, even though it wouldn’t change much.“Why would I be jealous?” Mickey released golden light around his whole body, and it was so strong that the black floor under his feet was fading away as if it couldn’t withstand its nature. “You will experience the loss of losing your lover and your beloved Green Fang as well. On top of that, you will lose this fight against me. But don’t worry. I won’t kill you. I will keep you alive just enough to keep hanging

“The three minutes have already passed,” Catherine shouted at Black Dragon even though he ignored her words. That didn’t stop her.“No matter how powerful you are or how high of a rank you hold in Hawkers,” Catherine blurted, “you are only as good as your integrity. It seems like First Son Mickey and the guardian Black Dragon don’t have any integrity whatsoever.”By doing so, she caught Black Dragon’s attention.“Your rantings may sound good in audiobooks,” Black Dragon said, “but reality is far from different.”“So you’re admitting that you have no integrity then,” Catherine barked.“I never said that.”“But that’s what you meant. You are clearly not fit for the guardian post.”Black Dragon frowned. “You shouldn’t have said that.” He turned to face her. “Take those words back.”“Or what?” Catherine snorted. “You think I’m afraid of you? If you’re a real man, you would have stopped the fight after three minutes, but you are not, which is why you didn’t stick to your word.”“I’m sorry,

You think your aura can match mine? I’m many stages above you, stupid girl!”“Is that so?” Catherine used her ability, and Kuro suddenly felt pressure above him, which forced him to slow down.“W-What’s this?” Kuro was startled. “Why do I feel like my body has grown five times heavier?”“That’s because of this stupid girl,” Catherine went for a swift punch

At Golden Tower.Serena rushed over to Lily’s room and said, “The devil’s cube has been cast on Mount First.”“Ho… what do they not want us to see?” Lily wondered.“Should I go and check?” Serena asked.“Don’t go by yourself. Send someone expendable,” Lily replied.“I’ll pick someone outside our kettle then,” Serena said and quickly left.Lily was drawing a paintbrush on the wall. The image looked like a forest with a single lily flower standing out more than the other flowers and beasts.“Only the guardians are given the devil’s cubes,” Lily thought. “Are Black Dragon and Mickey having serious duels? Why now of all times? No, it doesn’t make sense. They must be fighting someone else. But who would be stupid enough to intrude Mount First, a place that’s creepy to say the least. I wonder which fool dared to go there this time.”At the same time, elsewhere in Hawk Park.Philip and Sedrick were eating breakfast by the beach.
