Chapter 5: Bound by Vengeance

Ethan was speechless. Looking back, he was the rightful heir to the Walton dynasty, but his father had disowned him. Of course, Ethan regretted his decision to marry Bella Harrison against his father’s wishes. Yet it still didn’t mean he would be overjoyed about this news.

His uncle held out the papers to him. Everything about his inheritance was stated right there. Ethan took it, just because seeing the man’s shaking hands crushed his heart.

“What am I supposed to do with all of this, uncle?”

“Become Master Walton. Your father’s rightful successor.” Aaron cleared his throat, struggling to stand from his wheelchair. “Listen, Ethan.”

His nephew nodded, showing that he was all ears, and Aaron closed his uncast hand in his, continuing, “I have no children. My only son died years ago. If I’m to leave this world without correcting the mistake my brother made, then I would be the most evil man to have ever lived.”

Ethan lowered his head, unsure. “It’s been three years. What if I don’t have what it takes to lead?”

“You are a Walton. It’s already in you.”

“This is crazy.” Ethan shook his head, trying to make sense of how his life had drastically changed in the past few hours.

Aaron patted his back, chuckling. “I know, but when has life ever not been crazy?”

“Won’t there be a board meeting first?” Ethan rambled, still nervous.

“There will be, but first, there are conditions you must fulfill." Aaron settled back in his wheelchair, gesturing for the man who rolled him over to leave. “If the Harrisons and the Suarez’ exist, we cannot thrive.”

They were alone now, and Ethan understood what his uncle was asking of him. This was a war, and he was about to become the center of it.

“I was married to Bella Harrison."

“Exactly why she’s the enemy.”

“You want me to harm people!” Ethan frowned.

“I want you to destroy groups that are a threat to us. That’s a different thing.”

“Who are the Suarez’?”

Aaron smiled sinisterly. “Marco Suarez is your ex-wife’s new boyfriend. I hear their engagement party is coming up."

Ethan clenched his fists. She had just gone through a divorce and wasn’t waiting a second to jump into the arms of another man. It was a slap in the face for Ethan.

How shameless could Bella Harrison really be?

“I won’t destroy them because I feel angry that she left me."

“Even if I tell you that they had a hand in your parent’s death?”

The news hit him hard in the face, like a ton of bricks. He didn’t expect his uncle to make such accusations. Hell, he had just found out that his parents were dead.

Not a single person in the city knew. Aaron must have used all of his money and power to keep his little secret while enjoying his time as the chairman of the board.

It also hurt him deeply to know that Bella had a hand in something as evil as that. She must have known what her father was up to, and she allowed it. It made him wonder if he had really known the woman he had married.

But Bella knew nothing about the family he came from. Perhaps if she knew, she wouldn’t have said all those hurtful things to him, and their marriage would have lasted.

“Why are you telling me all of this now, uncle?”

“Because I failed." Aaron’s voice pitched in disappointment. “I failed, my brother, but maybe you won’t."

“Our enemies play dirty; how sure are you that I won’t fail?”

Aaron chuckled. “I’ve always believed in you, Ethan. Deep down, you are strong, and I pity any man who underestimates you.”

“If you put it that way.” Ethan shrugged, squinting, when the harsh afternoon sun came up. “Are you done, uncle?”

“No.”

“Old man…” Ethan smiled tightly; he was really overstepping.

Aaron chuckled again. “My second condition is that you take care of my ward when I die. She’s been in my care for three years. Her parents are no more, and she has no one in this world but this family.”

Ethan arched a brow. “Your ward? That’s new.”

“I was keen on doing some good in this life before I died. Who knew it would be this soon?”

“I need a name if I’m going to babysit for you.”

“Nadia Walton. She’s a lovely girl.” His smile was big, and Ethan could see that his uncle truly cared for this girl.

Under different circumstances, Ethan would have refused his uncle’s offer to lead the company, but someone murdered his family, and he vowed that they would pay for their sins.

“Very well, uncle. I will avenge my parents and grow the Walton Dynasty to shame what it is today. I will also treat Nadia Walton as my blood. Not even a single hair on her head would ever be tampered with. You have my word.”

“Check your phone.”

Ethan pinched his gaze, confused. He took out his cellphone from his pocket with his good hand and unlocked it.

He had just received an alert.

“$100,000,000,000.”
