"Mother, how can you say that?" she implored, stepping closer, her voice tinged with disbelief and a hint of rebuke. "You should be grateful. Sir French just saved Emily's life."

Elizabeth met her daughter's gaze, her expression cooling further, if such a thing were possible. "Gratitude is owed when a debt is incurred, Eveline. Luck requires no such thing," she said, her voice low.

Darien, overhearing the exchange as he tidied away the remnants of his makeshift treatment area, couldn't help but roll his eyes. The action was subtle, hidden from most of the room, but it spoke volumes of his opinion on the matter.

"Some people," he muttered under his breath, not quite quietly enough.

The remark was not lost on Eveline, who bit back a smile, her earlier irritation fading to amusement. Despite the gravity of the situation, she found a sliver of humor in the absurdity of pride.
