Morning finally came and he was happy about that. Lucius got up from bed and had a shower. He didn’t waste any time as he wanted to confront his wife before signing the divorce papers.
He left his shabby apartment and got a ride to Valerie's workplace. WILDE CORPORATIONS.
The company dealt with anything real estate, architecture and cars especially with high end celebrities and buyers. The building was also over the top just like the family. He remembered coming here, sometimes days on the end , to just fulfill his father-in-law's wishes. He did so much work for this company even though he wasn't a part of it that it seemed like he had built it from the ground up. Valerie's father, Kent, never even paid him a cent after it all.
He shook his head and the thought left his mind. As he was about to enter he heard a man shouting, he was probably the owner of the newspaper stand he stood beside.
“COME GET YOUR PAPER HERE! VALERIE WILDE, OF THE WILDE FAMILY, HUSBAND HAS AN AFFAIR.”
People started to flock around the man to get a better look at the story. Lucius sighed.
“I guess it’s already out there.”
A hand rested on his shoulder.
“Excuse me. You’re Valerie Wildes husband aren’t you?”
Lucius raised an eyebrow at the lady who spoke to him with a newspaper in her hand. His face boldly printed on the front page.
“I knew it. You heartless man. How could you do that to your wife? HEY, EVERYONE THE CHEATER IS HERE. VALERIE'S CHEATING HUSBAND IS RIGHT HERE!”
The crowd turned around to see who the person was but Lucius ducked and headed inside the building. He went over to the elevator and headed up to the fifth floor where his wife's office was.
While he entered her office he got stares from the workers. He ignored all of them and focused on where he was going. Lucius opened the door and saw Valerie, sitting at her desk in a white gown. Her hair was held up in a stylish updo. With the light that bounced off her smooth face, she looked ethereal. If he wasn't married to her, he would have thought she was an angel rather than the devil she was. She looked up at him with a neutral face before turning back to her work.
“You made it. Here it is. Sign it and get out.”
Valerie passed the file to him without even looking up from her laptop. Her nonchalancy about what she had done was starting to anger him.
“What the fuck was on the news Valerie? You lied to everyone about what happened.”
She looked up at him with a smirk on her face.
“What did you expect? That I would tell everyone that I cheated and ruin my family name. We both know you had to take the fall for our divorce.”
Lucius stepped forward.
“Did you even tell your family the truth?”
She scoffed and stood up to take a drink from her bar. A chuckle escaped her lips.
“Are you daft? Of course not. I am my parents' little princess after all. My brothers may have believed you but they wouldn’t dare speak out. They know who actually holds the power in that house. Look, sign those papers and let me move on with my life. I have no use for you anymore. Dad is going to give me the biggest share of the company after what you did. You actually telling them your side was the best thing that ever happened. You're worthless to me now."
“Everyone hates me now. The public thinks I’m scum.”
Valerie turned to him with a glass of alcohol in her hands.
“But you are scum. You should know that you are worth nothing to anyone. You are lower than scum Lucius and you should just accept your fate.”
Lucius thought of speaking back to her but he had gotten tired of all the back and forth. There was nothing he could say to make her see what she did wrong. Valerie was a lost cause. Lucius took the pen and paused. He shook his head. No. He was not going to give her the satisfaction of getting rid of him. He threw the pen back at her and scowled.
“I am not signing this and mark my words, I will make you pay Valerie Wilde. I swear it.”
He walked away while Valerie shouted after him.
"Get back here Lucius. Sign these papers damnit."
Lucius ignored her and kept on walking. Angrily, Valerie swirled the drink in her hands.
“Poor little man. I know that you'll be back. It's only a matter of time.”
Lucius went downstairs to leave the building but seeing the amount of people that were waiting outside to possibly attack him, he decided to wait. He waited until the afternoon to leave to avoid Valerie's crazy fans. He knew she was famous but not like this.
Once he noticed that the crowd had dispersed, he went home feeling like he just lost a battle. By now, he was sure that the whole world thought he was a cheater and still he was more livid than he was ashamed.
Just then he got a call. It was an unknown number but he picked it up after the third ring.
“Who is this?”
He heard a cough on the other side before a deep voice spoke.
“Hello. Is this Mr Lucius?”
“Yes it is. Who are you and what do you want?”
“My name is Ben Atkins and it has been my job to look for you for the past 20 years. You sir are the heir to the Steele fortune. You are a billionaire legacy.”
Lucius laughed. This was a prank call. It had to be. He couldn’t be rich, although he didn’t know his real parents he doubted this was real. This man was lying to him.
“Look I don’t know who put you up to this but it is not funny. My parents are dead. I have no one. Haven't I suffered enough because of this cheating scandal? Leave me the fuck alone dude.”
He ended the call and continued on his way back home but a black Rolls Royce jeep pulled up in front of him. He continued to walk past it when a man in a brown Armani suit came out of the car. He had a three thousand dollar designer watch on. His hair was neatly styled back and although he looked like he was in his late forties he didn't pass as an old guy.
“Lucius. I’m Ben.”
Lucius upon turning back saw a man that looked like he had been on the Forbes magazine a couple of times, calling him over.
“I wasn’t joking. You really are from a great influential family and your parents would like to meet you.”
Lucius scoffed but before he got a word in, the man spoke.
“Your adoptive parents might be dead but not your real ones. Come with me sir.”
Lucius never told anyone about being an adopted child but somehow this man knew. He had a normal family and even though they weren’t well to do he still had a great childhood. That was until they died in a car accident when he turned 19.
"How do I know you're telling the truth? Do you have any proof?"
Ben walked closer to the car and opened the door to Lucius.
"You just have to come with me and find out."
