Chapter 33

The sun threw a warm light over the Saturday morning as Tonia, spurred by a combination of resolve and apprehension, called Lucas's number. The phone rang, each tone mirroring the trepidation of the request she was about to make. After a few rings, Lucas answered, his voice a calm hello on the other end.

"Hello?" Lucas's voice kept a placid manner, ignorant of the tempest gathering in Tonia's head.

"Lucas, it's Tonia," she started, her tone calm but laced with an undertone of desperation.

"Tonia, good morning. What can I do for you?" Lucas's voice contained the courtesy required in such meetings, but Tonia could hear an unsaid strain hanging underneath the surface.

"I wanted to talk about Liam," Tonia remarked, her words lingering in the air as she waited for a response.

There was a short delay on the other end, and Tonia could practically feel Lucas's cautious manner over the phone. "What about him?" he eventually queried.

"I think it's my turn to have him for the week," Tonia remark
