Barrett knew where his brother wanted to talk decently. Bobby did not have the hobby of reading. For some reason, however, he liked collecting books. Because of that, Bobby has a small library in his house.
It was in that place that Bobby liked to talk serious stuff.
He went into the library and sat on the nearest couch. It did not take long for the woman and Bobby to arrive.
The woman served Barrett some tea, to which he drank casually. He glanced at Bobby and saw him leaning at the door with arms crossed over his chest.
Bobby was looking at Barrett with displeasure, but not so bad as earlier. After all, Bobby would never do anything that might cause his collection to be destroyed.
Who knows how long they were in that position? Bobby just looked at him in deep thought while Barrett waited.
“Brother… How long are you going to think?” Barrett asked finally.
He was glad that his brother was not hitting him anymore, but he did not have the whole day waiting for him to decide if he would talk to him or not.
Bobby glared at him. He sighed deeply before asking, “So, the girl is really sick?”
Barrett nodded, his expression grave. He cleared his throat before speaking, “Yes, she is very sick. I need to get money for her treatment—”
“So you came here to borrow money from me?” Bobby asked, interrupting him.
Barrett forced out a smile and then responded, “Honestly, I don’t care at this point if I have to steal it from you.”
He snorted before mockingly smiling and said, “You haven’t changed at all... always thinking of you.”
Barrett shook his head. “No, this isn’t about me,” he said before sighing deeply. “It’s about her. She deserves to live!”
“I bet so... and believe it or not, I would give you the money, but coming here was a mistake...” Bobby said as he walked towards the vacant chair in front of Barrett.
“Why’s that?” Barrett dryly asked. He looked at Booby with utmost seriousness.
Just then, the woman arrived. She gave Barrett something to eat before she sat next to Bobby.
“Meet my wife, Yumeko,” Bobby said. “That reminds me, I never met your wife.”
There was sarcasm in Bobby’s tone. Of course, he could not blame him. Claudia did not want to meet Bobby. She said she was afraid of him.
“Nice to meet you….” Barrett said. It was a good thing that his brother got married.
“Your brother said many things about you,” she replied with a knowing smile. Bobby snickered.
“I could guess….” Barrett muttered. Bobby, being Bobby, must have said many not-so-good stuff about him.
“The cameras in residence are connected to the closed circuit of the union… the moment you entered here, they found you,” Yumeko said seriously.
Barrett looked in the direction of the camera with a strange smile.
Bobby groaned. He said, “Yumeko, darling. You are being kind to him. Also, Barrett doesn’t forget anything. Most of the time, he knew what he was doing. If he doesn’t involve his dick, he is quite smart.”
“Bobby… Can we just have a decent conversation?” Barrett asked, feeling stressed.
“What? Isn’t this decent enough?” Bobby questioned. “Am I wrong? Don’t fool me. You want to be found because you want to fight again to earn money for your daughter. I can’t lend you anything. You know that!”
Barrett pursed his lips. He looked at Yumeko and stiffly nodded. It’s not that Bobby did not have the money to lend him, but he couldn’t cause his money was easily tracked by the Union.
Fighting was his last resort.
Still, a part of Barrett hoped that he did not have to.
“Look, Barrett’s world works like this. The things he wants to do and the things he doesn’t want to do. What he wants to do, he does, and what he doesn’t, well, he doesn’t do it. Things as consequences, sacrifice, or responsibility that don’t exist in his mind,” Bobby continued ranting.
“What would you do in my place!?” Barrett questioned as he glared at Bobby.
Bobby angrily got up. While looking at Barrett with this disdain, he said, “That’s the thing, little brother, I can’t be in your place. I don’t go through life thinking that I can do whatever I want without consequences. When you left, buying your freedom from another patron, our patron took it out on me! I had to do a hundred damn fights for you, a hundred!”
“Do I force you to do the challenge of a hundred victories?” Barrett asked, trying to stand his ground.
Bobby stared at him for a while, which made Barrett feel uncomfortable.
“Of course not,” Bobby spoke, slow and cold. He looked at Barrett blankly, “I’m not the great Barrett. Nobody can make a hundred victories like the Barbaric.”
Bobby shook his head, “No, I lost my undefeated in the seventh, but that didn’t stop Abdul from making me fight another ninety-three. My record was positive. Fifty-three wins and forty-seven losses. Just stop winning in fight number eighty. From then on, there were twenty consecutive beatings, little brother. For your sake.”
Barrett felt a lump in his throat. He looked down, as he could not look Bobby in the eye. His actions had consequences, but since he didn’t see them. When he was so happy with his freedom, he didn’t have time to think about it.
However, now, guilt was eating him slowly, but he could not give up.
Barrett could almost laugh out when it was drawn to him how selfish he was. It was sickening. Disgusting.
“How did you manage to do all this then?” Barrett asked slowly, still not able to look at his brother.
Bobby replied, “After those beatings, you start to understand something about the fight Barrett. I became a Dottore. I trained many fighters who are now champions, and that gave me some money and stability….”
Barrett looked at his brother. With unshed tears in his eyes, he approached Bobby and said, “I’m so sorry, brother...”
Bobby looked at him and, letting himself be controlled by anger, closed his fist and punched Barrett very hard in the face. The man fell to the ground, stunned.
With his back on the floor, he looked at his brother with a complicated expression. His face hurt, but he knew that was not enough.
“You’re sorry!? Really!? Are you sorry!? To hell with your apologies Barrett, and to hell with your daughter!”
Hearing his daughter, Barrett saw red. He got up angrily, and his eyes shot with anger advancing toward Bobby.
At that moment, Bobby stood frozen. It was like a Deja Vu. He saw a flash of what Barrett used to be.
Barrett would not stop, but when he was a few centimeters from his brother, there was a loud of a door.
Barrett and Bobby hurriedly went out of the library, and they look looked towards the front door.
A man with a cane accompanied by three men in black suits entered the courtyard.
Yumeko held her breath. She was noticeably worried.
Bobby noticed this. He made a signal for her to calm down, and then he went out to the yard.
“You came much faster than Sahid expected,” Bobby said with a welcoming smile.
The man with the cane nodded. Sahid shrugged and said, “I could pretend I don’t give a shit about what you have to say, Bobby. I don’t feel like it. It’s too late, and I want someone to massage my balls tonight. So I’m going to cut down to the cheese.”
Bobby looked at him with anger, and next to him, Barrett stood.
Sahid smiled at Barrett and casually said, “The cheese, Barrett. You came back after five long years. You look just as stupid but less strong….”
“Sahid, someone left you cripple. Finally, you look the same, inside and out,” Barrett replied, grinning.
“The sharp tongue of the Barbaric, the winner, the undefeated, the man of the records. The traitor who bought his freedom from another damn Danyio when it was my father who fed you, taught you how to fight, and gave you everything you had, you damn ungrateful cunt,” Sahid responded with a kind smile. Completely different from his words.
Barrett frowned, “I also gave a lot to your father...”
“And you will give him more. Boys, catch him!” Sahid ordered, grinning.
“I came looking for you. Why do you think I won’t go with you...” Barrett said with raised hands.
Sahid snorted and replied, “You have a tendency to run away like a little whore!”
“I just need to make a deal! Talk to Danyio! talk to Abdul!” Barrett screamed hurriedly.
“There is no deal for you, tadpole. You have no trust or word. You have nothing. Not even your fucking freedom!” Sahid said with disdain.
“I am undefeated, the only one who has ever achieved a hundred wins in a row. You must give me something!” Barrett insisted through clenched teeth.
At that moment, he was really itching to hit Sahid’s face, but he knew he couldn’t do that.
Sahid snickered, “Sure. I’ll beat the hell out of you!”
Sahid, who was acting as if he was unwilling to cooperate, was making Bobby grow more concerned. Bobby halts in his tracks and turns towards Sahid with a look of confusion and uncertainty. “Wait, Sahid! You must stick to the code!” Bobby said while taking a step forward and positioning himself in front of Sahid. Barrett had his arms crossed over his chest and his eyes fixed on Sahid’s every move. He was determined to ensure that they stayed on track and didn’t deviate from the agreed-upon plan. Also, they all knew that Sahid was known to be sly as a fox. He would say something that might have another hidden meaning to it. “Don’t get involved, Bobby. You’re already up to your neck in shit!” Sahid yelled, glaring at Bobby. “I want to get involved!” Bobby stepped forward, furious. “I didn’t go anywhere! I gave everything to your father, and I continue to give him champions. So I am involved!!” Sahid raised a brow at Bobby. He had a thoughtful expression on his face and didn’t appea
Barrett struggled to lift himself up from the cold, hard ground, despite an incredible surge of anguish coursing through his body. His eyes were fixed on the horizon straight in front of him, filled with purpose. He leaned down, his fingers scrabbling for a handful of the coarse, dry dirt underneath him, as he began to regain his equilibrium. Barrett raised his hand high, clutching the earth within his tight fist with grit and resolve. Then, with all his effort, he tossed it across the gap, aiming straight at Mustafa on the back. “Where are you going, fagot? I’m not done with you yet!” Barrett screamed out while maintaining a fake smile. Mustafa looked at Sahid. “Boss, if I pay his debt, can I kill him?” Mustafa remarked while maintaining eye contact with Sahid. At that very time, he was raging with fury. Sahid shook his head and said, “You don’t have to pay his debt. Death is a possibility in this business….” Mustafa’s eyes widened. They exchanged a look that said everything, a
As the sun began to rise and cast its light on the city, Barrett was sitting shotgun in the back of a black pickup truck that was driving down the highway. This was it for him. He was traveling towards the very life that he had left behind years ago. The situations that he was in these past few days were something he was not prepared for. In spite of the fact that he was thinking about the daughters he had left behind, he shifted his focus to the constructions. Barrett clung to the hope that it wouldn’t be for too long, but he was aware that the wolf’s jaws were getting closer and closer to his neck, and he understood that, at that point, anything might have happened. It was always the case, even before. The people in this dark would always relish the opportunity to bite you when you least expect it. It was like a form of entertainment for them. While he was concentrating on what was going on outside, his attention was taken by a voice that was coming from the passenger seat. Wh
The three individuals went into the primary room. Barrett recognized the significance of the large empty rectangle in the center of the room as soon as he saw it because the tables had been arranged in such a way as to create it.No matter how thoroughly they attempted to clean that location, it had an overwhelming odor of blood and perspiration. At the far end of the room, several staircases supported a makeshift throne that was occupied by a guy dressed in a green silk robe embroidered with gold flowers.“Barrett, the Barbaric, the undefeated, the invincible... The traitor!” The man with a glass of whiskey in his hand said.Barrett advanced and looked at him directly, the man was smiling, and on all his fingers, he had gold rings that gleamed against the lamp in the room.“You are a legend…” the man said, smiling.Barrett advanced. After kneeling down, he said, “Nice to see you, Danyio….”The man let out a hearty laugh before replying, “Manners… that is useless for a man of your lin
On his face, there was also blood, and from the floor, he heard Abdul’s laughter.“The Barbaric fighting with technique and short shots to reduce damage. Who are you?”Barrett got up, and his body was sore. If they saw Luke’s face, he seemed more hurt. However, Barrett felt severe pain on the side of his head while Luke seemed to move. This is bad… Barrett thought to himself. The image of his daughters came to his mind, and remembering Mustafa, he launched himself with everything he had in front of him.As he advanced, his mind repeated only one idea.My body will react, my body will react! He was sure that, as with Mustafa, his body was going to react without problems. Luke waited for him, and he could see how he moved. The inclination of his body and the way the kick would go for him.His kinesthetic vision kicked in, and he could easily predict Luke’s strike. The kick would come up from behind to land on his head, but Barrett anticipated the moment.Barrett attempted to inflict s
Barrett’s alarm went off, but he was already awake and ready to go. Barrett was wide awake at five o’clock in the morning since he had been unable to get to sleep any time throughout the previous night. When he looked around, he noticed that many of the cots were already totally occupied by people who were getting ready to work.Everyone who slept there had some way, or another lost their way in life and deserved what they got.Barrett looked at them. In Abdul’s eyes, they were simply paying their debt with work.“If I were you, I would get up. After all, the food is not enough for everyone again!” One of them said, walking.Barrett nodded. Even though he wasn’t hungry, he knew that because of the way he worked, it was important for him to maintain a healthy diet.Strolling out of the warehouse where the other workers slept, he joined them in walking out to the pier where they were waiting to line up.Barrett looked at Luke, the man he had fought the previous day, with a sense of wond
“All Abdul’s workers owe him. Before, he used to kill those who didn’t pay him, but since the Danyios took over the city, the man understood that making them work was better than just killing them,” she said as she sat next to Barrett.“So all these people owe Abdul debts!” Barrett said with wide eyes. He just realized that Abdul was way greedier than before. She nodded and said, “Many are gambling debts. Others do not have to pay rent or loans, and many are simply people who give after people to pay debts.”Barrett looked around, surprised.“And what is he doing here?” Barrett asked, pointing at Luke.“Well, Luke was a ranked fighter. He was pretty high, but he lost four times in a row, causing Abdul to lose property and business, so Abdul took the cost of his business from Luke’s earnings, leaving him with nothing, and gave him the offer that he could walk away with nothing or fight and win! Luke is a competitor, so he chose the winning option, bet a lot of money on his victory, and
“What do you mean, if I had taken the phone, he was going to take my winnings from the fight?” Barrett asked as he stopped and looked at the seeing the girl. She looked at him and said, “Yes, it’s the rule. He sets the prices for his things. That’s why nobody here does anything or lends anything for free!”“What is this advice of yours going to cost me?” Barrett asked while looking at her doubtfully. She said, smiling, “Nothing. I see you don’t understand your situation. Go do what you think you should do, and when you crash face to the ground, look for me, I’ll help you, and we’ll talk business... By the way, the foreman’s right has a jump previous on the shoulder. Without that, you will not be able to get out of the way!”Barrett looked at the young woman, and she walked away.Even though he did not have a complete understanding of the circumstance in which he found himself, he did recognize that the location in which he found himself was not ideal.Because of this, he quickly avert
