AVOIDING TROUBLE

Maven squirmed from side to side, watching Grandma Clara retire to her room. She was devastated and confused about what to do. Her husband is in the hospital, lying in a very crucial state. All Grandma Clara cares about are contracts and deals. Deals that she knows nothing about. Maven sighed and snickered at once.

She had to go back to the hospital to look after Thomas, but then again, grandma is a woman of her words, and if she is unable to meet the demands, she might as well lose everything. She held her jaw in her hand and began to think.

She grabbed her phone and walked out of the house. She got into her car and drove off to work. She could only play her favorite music as she drove to work.

She wiped the tears that now rolled down her cheek as she recalled every bad treatment and mean word Grandma Clara had ever said to her.

This was it, and she has tried so hard not to hate Grandma for anything. She smacked her lips together and focused on driving; she didn’

She managed to greet him first.“What is good about the morning, Maven?” He asked me, staring daggers at her.“Well. I don’t know. I am alive; I do not know about you." Maven answered.Patrick snickered a little, and with shrouding square shoulders, he walked into the office like he owned her life.“I can see that you have decided to prove how strong you are and how foolishly you want to end your life, just like your father. You are late today, and that is one of the things I have planned to tell Ma Clara today.” Patrick informed her with a with look in his eyes.“Ma Clara knows I will be late; besides, she asked me to stop by her house before coming to work this morning. You can call her and confirm." Maven spoke with so much confidence.“We shall see about that,” Patrick said, bringing out his phone from h

She returned his smile with a wink, and when she got into the room, she gave him a shy and quick hug.“I didn’t’ think you would show up gain." He said this to her in a more excited tone than she had when she came in.“Of course not. I mean, I had a couple of things to do at work, so I had to stay back to finish so I will not get into Grandma’s trap again." She answered.“Grandma’s trap? Is there any trouble?’ Thomas asked as he adjusted himself on the bed.“Not exactly, but she has asked that twenty percent be deducted from my paycheck this month." Maven complained with her hands lacing on each other, her eyes facing down on her feet.“Twenty percent is outrageous; what was your crime?” Thomas asked the question with suspicion in his eyes.“You think I am at fault too, really?” She questioned me with surprise in her eyes."No, Maven, listen! I didn’t mean it in a bad way. As a matter of fact, I am upset with her

GOING HOMEMaven sighed in relief as she helped Thomas out of the hospital. On his head and arm was a cast to help hold the bruises and fractured bone till they're healed. She helped him pick up the medications from the pharmacy department and led him down through the elevator. Her car was parked not too far from the entrance, and she held his hand and led him into the car like a toddler.“Thank you, Maven; I don’t know what I would have done without you." Thomas began his speech in a very solemn tone. Maven looked at him with one hand on the hand brakes and the other hand on the steering.“Why? I had to do what wives do." She answered with a smile on her face as she focused on the road. She drove through the express and then remembered that she hadn’t come with food for him to eat, at least.“You must be famished by now. I totally forgot to get food on my way to the hospital.”“It’s not a problem; we can always get food in the house." Thomas reminded her.“No! I won’t let you wait t

THE SLAPIt’s been four days since Thomas was discharged from the hospital. Maven was in her room when the call came in for her to go see Grandma. She rolled her eyes, knowing that it was going to be another section of insults and talking down, and she wasn’t just ready for all the drama at whatever family meeting they wanted to have. When he walked into the room with his cast and bandages taken off, Maven was amazed to see him stand and walk properly without groaning.“What? Its only been four days; how did the miracle happen?” She asked as she held his face in her hands.“I guess a miracle happened. I don’t know,” Thomas answered. Meanwhile, the neck piece he was wearing illuminated the moment he stepped into the bathroom to ease himself. He flashed back on how he fell on the ground in the bathroom. By then, Maven had gone downstairs to make food for them. He didn’t bother to scream because he knew no one would hear him, and even if Lady Victoria did, she would prefer he died than

I believe she will come around, so be calm. Come, grandma is waiting." He said he was stretching his palm out for her. She need not think twice that he is asking for the keys. She threw it to him, and he grabbed it. He pushed the open button on the key, and when the car clicked open, he opened the door for Maven to enter. You need to be calm. Remember, you are going to meet Grandma, and right there is a whole bunch of anger you would have to carry." Thomas advised.“It’s fine”. Maven said and smiled. They drove to Grandma’s house, having fun with songs and discussion. The moment Thomas pulled up in front of Grandma’s house, her countenanc

SHE IS GONE Grandma Clara lay on the bed, breathing slowly. They all looked at her, and a great fear gripped them. Dr. Ambrose quickly called the hospital so they could bring the oxygen, and in no time, the ambulance came bearing the oxygen cylinder. “Doctor Ambrose, don’t you think we should take her to the hospital at once?” one of the nurses asked with concern in her eyes. “We can’t take her away from here. The minute we try to lift her form here, she might not recover from the attack. So it’s best to leave her and administer the medications until she is stable enough to move the distance. “Okay doctor. If you say so." The nurse stood aside and rolled the little first-aid box to the side. Maven watched their every move. She is fully aware that Grandma never really likes her, but letting grandma die a sudden death is something she cannot stand. Her uncles were going to kick her out of the company and leave her with nothing. She clasped her hands together and said a little pra

GRANDMA IS HEALEDGrandma looked at them for a second and frowned. “You mean Thomas helped me back to life, and all you could do was lock him up?”‘We thought…”"Oh, shut your trap.” Grandma lashed at Patrick for the first time. “That’s a very foolish and ungrateful thing to do. I could have been dead and gone forever, and the young man did his little magic. Release him fast." She ordered him, and that instant, Patrick called the cops to release Thomas. "Grandma, are you alright?” Maven asked her. She was sitting upright on her bed, and David had curled up beside Grandma like he was going to give her a spare life if this didn’t last.“I am fine, Maven, thanks to that husband of yours for bringing me back to life." Grandma said with a scowl, That is the typical grandma; she never really appreciates anything that comes from Maven with her heart. In about twenty minutes, Thomas showed up."Hey, thank you for your help; they told me everything." Grandma said this the moment she saw Thoma

A DAY AT THE GYMThe alarm clock rang so loudly in Thomas’ ears that he woke up jumping out of bed. Maven was already tired of having him around her space, so she secretly moved him to the guest room. Mom would only wonder why the duo stopped sharing the same room, and once she had asked, Maven told her that she needed some space for herself to think, and besides, the room was almost too small to accommodate both of them. He sprang to his feet and rushed into the bathroom. He had totally forgotten that he had an appointment with Sir Larry. Today was the first day of the fight, and he had to be there quite early. Sir Larry was already upset about the last time they had met when Thomas arrived late. It doesn’t matter if Victoria dies of hunger this time; he doesn’t truly care because what he has waiting for him in a few months is way bigger than Victoria and her entire family out together. And even as rich as the Taylors are, they are poor compared to the kind of wealth Grandpa Al Th

His eyes shot a glowing green light and when Maven saw it she became very terrified. “What is wrong with you Thomas? Why are your eyes glowing?”she began to panic. From all she could see, Thomas looked like a demigod. “Is everything alright? The moment she shook him violently he came back to his original self. The green glow in his eyes died down immediately. “I think someone needs my help around here”. He said unbuttoning his suit as he began to walk faster. He increased his pace so much that Maven had to run along with him. “What do you mean someone needs your help?” she asked him but he gave her deaf ears and continued without stopping to say a single word. A DATE The moment Maven got home her mom had done the decorations and a cake was placed on the table with candles. ‘What’s going on here? Maven asked as she walked into the living room. Lady Victoria had a smile on her face. “Happy birthday my child”. Lady Victoria said, handing the glass of wine to Maven. ‘Mom. You did all of this for me? Awn! Thank you so much”. Maven said smiling, she took the glass from her mom and sipped from the wine. “This is good.” She then cleared her throat and clasped her hands together. “Look what we have here”.She exclaimed and rushed off to sit close to the cake. I have a wish and I want to make it. She closed her eyes and took in a deep breath for a second before blowing off the candle sticks. Lady Victoria and Abigail clapped their hands happily. “Happy birthday Ms.” Abigail said to her and handed her a small box. “You got me a gift too?’ Maven asked with her eyes watering. “Come here” she grabbed the lady and hugged her tightly. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAVEN "What agreement are you talking about mom?"Maven asked her mother. “You know about it already and Grandma here knows too. It’s long overdue and I need to get my life together. A life outside of the Taylor’s roof”. Lady Victoria was determined to get her life back at least for the rest of her days. Having a companion and someone to share her burden with. “Grandma, what do you have to say to this proposal?’ Maven asked, looking at her grandma with knowing eyes. “Mom, what exactly are they talking about? What deal do you have with Victoria? Do you have any idea Derrick?’ Patrick turned to his brother and asked him. Derrick shook his head. “I have no damn idea anything like this ever took place. “Whoa! Mom, that's pure wickedness. I thought all these while she stayed back with us because she so loved her husband and wanted to keep the legacy going. I never knew you had some contract running right under our noses” Patrick said the words without filtrating an

WE ARE SORRY Since the incident Maven has just been minding her business until Grandma’ request for dinner came through. She had always known who grandma was when it came to having dinner or lunch or even breakfast at her place. With all that has gone on she just doesn’t want to get entangled with grandma and her boys, just focusing on her job and if need be quit if another chaos comes. All that mattered to her right now was her peace of mind and sanity. Maven walked down to meet her mother in the living room. “Mom, did Grandma Clara call you?’ She asked her mother if she had her eyes glued on the TV for her favorite show. The lady shook her head repeatedly without taking her eyes off the screen. “Well, I guess we would be having dinner at grandmas’ I suggest you go get dressed.” She informed her mother. Lady Victoria looked up at Maven with a frown on her face. “I am not going to Clara’s house for no dinner” she said rudely, grabbing the remote control on the table. “Why?Sh

SENTENCED It’s been three months since Sebastian has been in and out of court. His Lawyer Bryan knows well that Sebastian would never win the case against the government and the Al Thani’s. The biggest name in the society. He had his head bowed in the cubicle when his lawyer made the last statement. The presiding judge Albert Wilmore sat on his seat with the wig hanging stylishly on his head. An old man from the North. He is presumed to be the best and sincere judge in the entire city. “Get me out of here” he whispered to his lawyer in a very soft tone. “I am trying my best. The judge is a strict one but I will see what I can do. “What do you even mean by that? I don’t need you to try, I need you to get me out. What’s there to lie and convince the court that I didn’t do it? You can’t even lie. Shame on you”. He said and just then the judge hit the gavel to maintain order. The break was over. The judge cleared his throat. “After hearing from both parties, this honorable court

LET THEM GO The moment she saw the news she knew she had to do something to save her son. She had gone to the station to plead and try to bride David but the officers wouldn’t let her do that despite the fact that they know her too well. “I need my son out of here. No one is saying anything”, she began to cry. Just then Thomas drove in. She threw her bag on the floor and rushed to meet him. “I asked you to get your lawyers ready. David is appearing in court in a few days and there is nothing anyone will do about it. I will not let him treat my wife like that all because of envy”. Thomas was still pissed at what David did. But before he could say one more word, the old woman fell on her knees and began to plead. Everyone came out and began to look in surprise that the all mighty Lady Clara Taylor could go on her knees begging a small boy like Thomas all because she wants her son to come out of prison. At this point Thomas remembered his grandma and how she had gone to her k

He murmured as she reached out for the phone. Seeing Greg’s name made his heart churn a little bit. “Greg, what do we have this morning?’ he asked in a greasy voice. “Sir, you have a meeting with the Lesotho group at 9am”. His phone was calm and patient. “I will try not to be late. Put everything in other”. “Yes boss! Greg answered. They spoke on the phone for a while listing Thomas’ meetings and activities for the day after which they ended the call. Thomas got out of bed grudgingly. After the whole drama for the week he doesn’t see himself getting into any meeting or sit but he had to do it for the sake of the company. The company has to go one way or the other. MAVEN IS DISCHARGED Lady Victoria has never been this rude to grandma but since Grandma has decided to bite the finger that feeds her then she would have to face the dance and the music she had set for herself. Thomas left the prison that instance and he headed straight to the hospital to meet Maven. On his way he had asked Grace Maven’s assistant to watch over her while they await her discharge time. He hurried and drove the car to the hospital and when he arrived at the front gate the men he kept to safeguard the yard nodded at him. They were dressed in black suits and black face Masks different from the security men who work for the hospital. He raised up using the elevator to the fourth floor where Maven was. He waved at the nurse rashly and wafted past her like spoke ready to consume a whole bush. This was the moment he wished he could kill his enemies with his powers but that would not be very necessary at this point. He is not big enough to face David and Sebastian. Rath
