CHAPTER 32

Dinner with the governor's yacht, a mahogany-framed lounge area with walls enhanced with models of old trimmers and gunboats and guides of the new world.

It was the basic deck simply behind the scaffold, down the thin foyer from the kitchen, where the Lebanese chef was working diligently. The formal dining area was around an oval marble table that stood firm and weighed at least a ton. Peter couldn't help thinking about how the Titanic stayed afloat above the water.

The governor's table had only two seats this evening, and above it was a small chandelier that rocked with the sea. Peter was at one end, the governor at the other. The first wine the steward brought for the evening was a white burgundy that, following the blistering by two iced Vodkas, was tasteless to Peter. But, of course, not to his host, the governor. It was the governor's best wine, and he wanted Peter to have a taste of his luxurious choices.
