I could not believe my ears. “Did you say a Centaur?”
“Y-yes"
I tried to gather my thoughts... what have I read about centaurs?
Yes, they can be violent when provoked. They don’t speak much but when they do, they speak in riddles. They move in herds. But I can’t hear any other sound of hoofs.
“Jake" I whispered to my trembling cousin beside me. “do you hear any other hoof beat?”
“Other hoof beats? Are there supposed to be others?”
“Just try and listen.” I whispered back.
He kept quiet for a while and then said, “No. Nothing else.”
That’s strange. Now, I couldn’t even hear the one coming any longer. Where was it?
I stretched my neck around the trunk and saw that it had stopped moving. It was standing about 8 feet from where we hid. It’s tail swayed lightly from left to right. And occasionally it stamped its left hind leg.
It’s upper body, the part that was man-like twisted and turned, as if it knew we were there but just couldn’t find us.
“We are doomed! I heard they can kick your brain straight out of your head with their hoofs...” Jake groaned silently beside me.
“Keep shhh" I clamped my hand over his mouth and shoved his head down.
I heard the hoofs coming closer slowly. It stood beside the tree we were hiding. It’s fore limb were very close to my back, but it had not looked down to show that it had seen us.
“A Feline has not been born in over a century... and now here you are. A war is brewing and its because of you.” It suddenly said.
I looked up. Jake looked up and I noticed Jake had tears in his eyes.
“Get up, child.”
We both scrambled to our feet Jake gripped the back of my shirt tightly.
“You should hide but not from me. You shall be scared but now is not the right time. Now, you have to be strong because dark clouds are ahead. Death is looming on the horizon.”
With that, it trotted off. All the times it spoke it didn’t even glance at us once.
“Oh my god!” Jake said in an awed tone. “What was that all about?”
“I don’t know.” I replied and pulled him down. “Remember, it said we should hide.”
“He also spoke of a war... do you think that’s true?” Jake whispered.
“Of course. He knew I was a Feline and he didn’t even look at us.”
“How do you think he knew that?”
“Jake, I have no idea. Now, I really need this sleep.” I yawned and laid down at the foot of the tree. Before I fell asleep I heard the light snoring of Jake’s slumber.
I thought he was going to be keeping watch. I mentally face palmed myself and settled myself to sleep too. I had no idea when slept off.
“HOME SWEET HOME.” Claude said as their private Jet touched down. “The fresh air of London.”
The were escorted to the limo as soon as they stepped down from the airplane.
“It’s been a while since I’ve been in London.” Jaja said while sipping on the glass of champagne provided.
“Why, Jaja, you didn’t tell me. How is Alaska these days?” Jamie asked.
“You know, cold as usual. We’ve been getting bears attack but we manage to wade them off without them doing harm. As I said before, my wife runs the whole show. I’m so proud of her, that woman.”
Jamie poked Claude, who sat at the front seat and said, “Jaja’s wolf and his pack are all massive bears. They have more furs than we, the normal lot. It has something to do with evolution, don’t you think?”
“More like adaptation, sir.” Claude replied.
“Oh yes yes. Adaptation. They’re quite intimidating you know. Huge hairy wolfs.”
Claude made an appropriate sound for a reply. He was having an irritable itch in his mind, like something was wrong but he just couldn’t place his finger on it. And all the talk about a war all because of his son was keeping his mind on an edge.
They arrived at the pack without any hitch and got out of the limo into the Alpha’s house.
“Now let me see my godson...” Jaja said as soon as they stepped in from the porch.
“JAKE MORTON!!” Jamie bellowed.
“It would do you so much good if you didn’t shout like that... the whole pack probably heard your voice.” Charlotte, Jamie’s wife said, coming down the stairs.
“And it would do me so much good if you come to me right now.” Jamie said, walking forward and opening his arms.
After hugging and kissing to the immense embarrassment of Jaja and Claude who were also in the room, Charlotte stepped away from Jamie and embraced Jaja too. “Jaja... its been so long. How How up there at Alaska? How’s Mel?”
“We’re all fine Charlie. You should come over some time.”
“Oh I will...”
“Now, where’s my godson?” Jaja asked, looking around like he expected Jake to come bounding at him from behind a curtain.
Just then, the door opened and a man came in. He was the one left I charge of security after Gibson. He looked tough but slim. His hair was a bit longer than usual and he packed it in a ponytail above his head.
“Alpha.”
Jaja and Claude both turned at the same time.
“Wilson.” Jamie greeted. “What’s the hurry?”
“It might be nothing sir. But I thought you should hear this. A young lady came to me yesterday evening, just before the curfew Gibson told me you had imposed from Salem.”
“Which lady is that?”
“Lily Harfield. She’s a classmate of your boys, Jake and Jason.”
“What did she tell you?” Claude asked.
“Well, She was confused and didn’t know who else to talk to. You see, she was supposed to meet with Jason last night. But he was nowhere to be found. It might be nothing but she said she had a bad feeling about it that she came to me.”
“And where is this young lady?”
“Here sir.” He stepped aside and Lily came forward and curtsied before the men.
“Come my dear.” Jamie said, taking the girl by her shoulders. “What gave you the bad feeling?”
“Um... there were these drawings on the sand. That showed that someone had been there and I could catch a very slight whiff of Jason’s scent. But he had not been alone.”
Jamie turned to his wife. “Have you seen Jake or his cousin since yesterday?”
“No. He came back from school, eat hurriedly and disappeared out again.”
“May I go and check on my family, Alpha.” Claude asked and waited for a nod of affirmation from Jamie before he walked out briskly.
Claude was welcomed by a hug and quick kiss from his wife. “Jake is gone. Missing again. How is Jason?” “He is well. He seemed a bit nervous yesterday while eating lunch.” “Where is he?” Claude asked.“Probably with Charlotte’s kid. That would mean they’re both missing.” Lydia said. “Those boys.” Claude walked to a sofa and slumped there rubbing his temples. “Dad!” Harry bounded down the stairs to jump on his Dad’s lap. “My boy...” Claude opened his arms wide and crushed Harry in a tight bear hug. “Where’s your brother?” He asked Harry while balancing him on his lap. “He told me he was having his first fake date with Lily...” piped Harry. “He loves her, you know. Or so he says.” “You don’t believe him?” Claude asked gently.“I think it’s gross. Yuck!” Harry squeezed his face up. That made Lydia and Claude to burst out laughing. Harry jumped down from his father’s lap and raced up the stairs. He took some of the stairs in wolf fashion, landing on his hands and leaping higher.
The sounds of birds chirping woke me up. I opened my eyes slowly and sat up. My back was stiff and cracked as I sat up and stretched. I turned and still saw Jake sleeping soundly. The sun was just rising. It had plenty of light but no heat, yet. I got to my feet and looked at where we were. There was not much to see. Just plenty of large, old looking trees. They were huge, I could hardly see their top branches. The ground space was covered with dead leaves, dry sticks, humus and little shrubs and bushes. I hard a sinking feeling in my chest that we might even be in London anymore. I turned when I heard Jake yawn. He was awake now and was getting to his feet. He looked at me with sleepy eyes and said, “You figured out where we are?”I shook my head. He groaned and dusted his robe. The watcher robe I had stolen for him. “You figured out how we’ll get home?” He asked again. I shook my head again. He groaned again. “Tonight is a full moon. I’ve never spent a full moon out of a pack
"JASON’S NOT HOME.” Claude said, walking back into Jamie’s house. “Don’t sugar coat words, Claude.” Jamie said, slumping into a sofa and accepting the glass of whisky his wife offered him. He had unconsciously hoped that the boys were in Claude’s house. That was his last hope. “They’re missing... again" “Take it easy, Jamie boy.” Jaja said, patting Jamie on his slumped shoulder. Lily was in the corner with Jamie’s wife, Charlotte. She cradled a big mug of chocolate with her hands. Charlotte walked to the main room where the men sat.“What else did the kid tell you?” Claude said.“The kid has a name!” Charlotte snapped“I’m sorry. I’m just tired. What did Lily tell you?”“She said she had something like date with Jason...” “I know that much...” Claude said.“They were to meet under the large Oak tree.” “The tree is not near any of our borders, is it?”Claude shook his head. “No" “We have to go see the tree. What do you say?” Jaja suggested. “I think so too.” “We’ll be back, C
YOU’RE HUNGRY, aren’t you?” Jake said beside me. We’ve been walking and resting at intervals. We were following the flow of the stream this time. Hopefully, it would lead us to a bridge or a main road where we’ll see where we are. Because we even have no idea where we were at. “Here.” I handed him the bag I carried. “There are some pieces of meat I reserved there.” “Thanks Jas. You’re a life saver.” He collected the bag from my hand and stuffed his mouth with cold meat. “Where do you think we are?” He asked with a full mouth and in between biting.“I don’t know. Maybe Africa.” “Africa?” His mouth hung open in mock horror. “Maybe... Kenya. We should see some giraffes or elephants anytime soon.”“Stop lying to me.” Jake laughed.“I truthfully have no idea where we are.” I told him. “But we’re really far away...” “Yep.” I nodded in confirmation. “Wow... mad stuffs.” He kept on eating till the sun became too hot and we had to rest underneath a large tree. We still hadn’t seen any
ARE YOU OUT of your mind, Jamie?” Jaja asked. He was astounded. “What? My boys are missing...”“If you walk into the Fey Kingdom and accuse them of kidnapping your son and nephew when they didn’t... you’re just calling for war. You know kidnapping is a huge offence, you might even call up another meeting.” “Sir, Jaja is right.” Claude said. “Beside, we don’t have any evidence that Fey was involved. We will just be acting on a hunch... and you will be made to look very ridiculous.” “I never thought I’d say this Jaja, but you actually made sense.” Jamie said. “I always make sense Jamie boy.” “So what do you propose we do?” Claude turned to Jaja. “We wait.” “Wait?” Both Jamie and Claude asked.“Yes. We wait. Let’s head back to your place, Jamie. We’ll talk strategy and put out word for the boys.” “Sounds like a good idea to me. What do you think, Claude?” Claude shrugged and said, “Do I have any other option?” They walked back to Jamie’s house in relative silence. Each men dee
WE STARED AT each other for close to a minute. I didn’t move a muscle except for eyes which were blinking. Then slowly, he backed away from me and I breathed a sigh of relief. He sat down on his hind limbs and bent his ears back. I glanced on the floor around and saw the torn clothes that he had been putting on before he shifted. I groaned. I suddenly heard a howl. From the tenor, length and strength, it was the howl of an alpha. But I was just imagining things, we were in the middle of nowhere. A werewolf pack can’t just appear out of – There it was, I heard again. Jake raised his nose to the moon and gave a deep and long howl. The howl from the alpha came again and Jake ears perked up. He gave a low whine and shot forward. I scrambled to pack our stuffs and ran after him. He didn’t slow down, He just kept the pace until I thought I could not talk it any longer and was prepared for him to leave me when we burst into a very large compound with a big mansion set far back behin
THE BOYS HUDDLED together in a corner. They couldn’t tell the time of the day because the only window opening had been covered with a thick cloth. It sounded like a canvas or leather curtain. But with the cold, the figured that the sun was going down pretty quickly. The Werewolf blood had melted long before. It had turned into a puddle where Mart had thrown it to the amusement of Ellie and Nina. They could pick out the howl of the wind and stiff flap of the leather material covering the small window. Full moon was tonight and they knew it. A door swung open loudly and Ellie, who was relaxing just outside their cell, jumped to his feet. Nina walked in, closely followed by an elegant white haired woman. She stopped in front of their cell and eyed them glumly. “Where did you get these ones?” She asked.“Just outside Morton's border, Rosetta. Near the first scene.” Ellie said. She made some ‘tsk' sounds at the boys as she patrolled the front of the cells. The boys’ eyes followed her
The four men – Jamie, Jaja, Claude and Henry – all trooped out into the late afternoon. The sun was bright but not hot. It was setting already. “There’s something even more strange than the missing boys.” Henry commented.“And what might that be?” “It’s better to be seen than heard.” They crossed the narrow stream and walked down the path. The territory had started their advancement to proclaim ownership to this part of the land, but the processing was not yet finalised. The whole scene was swarming with half a dozen men from Jamie’s pack. They were investigating what had happened there and looking for clues. They bowed when they saw Jamie and Jaja approaching. Claude’s sharp eyes quickly took in the scene. Ten dead Vampires. He walked closer and stooped beside one. “Gunshot wound.” He whispered to himself, rubbing his index finger on the hole in the Vampire’s head. A shadow fell across him. He looked up at a figure that stood above him, blotting out the sun. He stood up and lo
