Chapter Three

“Honey, the video is gone.” Natalie purred into Dickson’s ear.

Dickson wrapped his hand around her, not paying attention. Infuriated, Natalie pulled away, “Dickson, I wanted Milton to suffer longer.”

The mentioning of Milton’s name brought him back, he asked Natalie what she was talking about and she explained the video of Milton handing money to the fat old woman had disappeared from the internet.

Unbeknownst to Milton, the moment he stepped his feet outside the college compound the video was deleted. “Where did it go?” Dickson screamed in fury, throwing his phone to the corner.

Natalie moved to console him, “my love, it will be okay.”

Dickson started laughing maniacally, when he calmed down, he said through gritted teeth, “I paid that old meanie to accuse him of stealing, to catch Milton red-handed as he handed her the money. I paid someone else to put the video on the internet.”

Natalie was taken aback, she took a step back while shaking her head.

Dickson started yelling loudly, “I paid them to keep the video up for a week. Now, this is twenty-four hours even over. What a useless piece of crap. They are useless just like Milton. I should have done something better.”

He hit the wall, and blood dripped from his knuckles, “I hate you, Milton. I will make you pay.”

Dickson has always been jealous of Milton. If it was not for how great he was at school, it was for how perfect he was towards Natalie, a girl he always had a crush on. As such, he planned on snatching Natalie from him.

“Where is he?” Dickson inquired, pushing past Natalie as if she was nothing.

Everyone in the hall stared at Dickson, some had anger in their eyes, while others were shaking their heads in disappointment. Natalie was on the floor, tears running down her face. Regrets coursed through her vein for betraying her love.

The mouths that cursed Milton throughout the day were the same mouths that started apologizing to no one in particular.

“We shouldn’t have concluded that fast.” “Better the devil you know than the angel you don’t.” “Are you sure that is how the saying goes?” “Oh, Dickson is so evil.” “Natalie should be ashamed of herself.” “We must apologize to Milton now.”

If only they had spoken this way earlier on… Milton wouldn’t have had a crappy day.

Milton Jackson was unaware of this as he walked to the river, the one place he found solace. Other than his girlfriend’s arms.

The tears streaming down his face weren’t stopping and honestly, they were not going to anytime soon. Milton was heartbroken.

His heart shrunk even further when he couldn’t shake off the picture of her kissing another man. Had they not been in love? Wasn’t she the one who promised to love him no matter what?

He shook his head. Milton dipped his feet in the river and removed them immediately, the water was freezing. Milton picked his shoes from the ground, and a sarcastic chuckle escaped his lips, “look at me. The shoes are mocking me too.”

His shoes were old, their color was unrecognizable. The soles were torn too. They looked exactly like someone’s open mouth laughing at him. He clicked and threw them into the river. Without looking back, he proceeded, “I might as well trek to I don’t know where.”

For about one hour, Milton Jackson lamented himself under his breath, it took his mind away from the surroundings that he didn’t realize someone was following him.

The beautiful woman behind Milton kept her distance. She was beautiful. Her flawless dark hair rested slightly below her shoulders. She wore a black pantsuit with a pair of red heels. She halted when a message came through the coms, “Brianna, it is done.”

“The boy won’t be a problem?” Brianna asked, her face showed no emotion but her palm was fisted.

“Yes, ma’am. The people who were responsible for recording and posting have been handled.” The man on the other end replied.

“Troy, I asked, will Dickson be a problem?” Brianna asked louder than she intended, she looked at Milton’s back and luckily, he didn’t hear her.

“Of course, ma’am. He won’t show his face anywhere near Milton again.”

“Good job.”

A groan escaped her lips, she would have loved to deal with Natalie too but didn’t. Yes, it was her job to tie the loose ends on everyone who embarrassed Milton Jackson, but she believed lovers should handle their issues by themselves.

She hoped after she talked to Milton, he would agree to communicate with Natalie and put everything to rest. The last thing Brianna wanted was to be screwed just because of matters related to the heart.

Her phone dinged. She read the message and smiled. “Everyone has apologized to Milton. Bring him.”

She looked in front of her and noticed Milton have started slowing down, he was still shaking his. “Look at your phone.” She whispered. If Milton had checked his phone, he would have realized the mean texts had changed into apologies.

Brianna typed faster, “on it.” She hit send and started walking hurriedly toward Milton.

Milton heard the sound of footfalls, and he shrugged. However, when the footsteps increased, he began running. Brianna called, “wait.”

Milton stopped.

Brianna ran to him. Standing in front of him, she joked, “hey, you know it is a bad idea to stop when a stranger calls for you.”

Milton didn’t answer. His eyes went to her red heels, he mumbled, “how are you walking with red heels here?”

“Excuse me?”

Milton looked up while sighing. He spoke meekly, “don’t look at me like that. I won’t steal from you.”

Brianna shook her head, “no, of course not.”

“You don’t hate me like the students and my girlfriend?” Milton’s voice broke on the edge.

She smiled sweetly at him, “I don’t hate you.”

Milton rubbed his eyes, “Okay then. Leave me alone.”

“I am sorry for what happened to you.”

Milton hummed, taking a step back.

Brianna stretched her hand to him when Milton didn’t shake it. She said, “I am Brianna.” Her smile stretched wider, and she took another step forward and rubbed Milton’s shoulder. Softly she said, “Milton Jackson, I am here for you.”
