“You’re running a cafe,” Ulmer added. “Obviously, you’re not stupid.”

“I’ll take that as a compliment,” Whitley smiled. “Since you clearly are not poor, you are not going to work at my cafe, right?”

“If I have money, can’t I work in your shop?” Ulmer asked her back.

“Of course, you can, but the reason I wanted to give you the job in the first place was because I wanted to improve the situation of your life,” Whitley tried her best to look like she cared for him. “You jumped into the river. Obviously, you’re going through some shit in life. It doesn’t seem like it's a money problem. So, if you tell me what that problem is, I could help you, or at least I’ll try my best to help you.”

Because Whitley was beginning to doubt Ulmer, she didn’t want him to join her cafe as a waiter anymore. She liked this place, and if he were to ruin it, she wouldn’t be able to take it.
