Chapter 49: Invisible Mockery

Jason was getting more and more brazen in defying her. She would find an excuse to put him in his place properly. In her eyes, Jason could only ever be the pathetic weakling cowering in the corner, unable to fight back or talk back. He was the perpetual punching bag, obediently catering to their every whim. Going against her wishes was the height of disrespect.

But James Brown was too preoccupied with keeping up appearances to think much about that. Still uneasy, he asked again, "Susan, you're sure you have the birthday present ready?"

"Dad, don't worry. I've got it covered this time. We'll make the family proud and save face. Jason was the one who got the gift, so be nice to him from now on."

As soon as the words left her mouth, Mary Martinez and Raymond Brown reacted as if scalded.

"Susan, have you lost your mind? What kind of decent gift could that worthless fool possibly get?" Mary shrieked.

"We're doomed. If he brings something embarrassing, I'd rather not have come at all," Ray
