“You shouldn’t say that Erica” Susan cautioned her younger sister, frowning. Both women had aprons tied around their necks and while Aunt Erica was chopping some vegetables at where she stood by the counter, While her sister, Susan, was stirring a sizzling pot of stew.Lines of sweat formed on Susan’s creased forehead. “There are so many eligible men out there. What exactly are you telling me about giving up on love?”Erica heaved a breath and dropped the kitchen knife on the tray. She could feel tears well up in her eyes and she held on to the edge of the counter, silently praying that her unnecessary tears should go away.Just a few minutes ago, Erica was all smiles and bubbly with the excitement of Elise’s birthday. She had been making plans with her elder sister , Susan, concerning the party and before both women could stop it, the conversation took a different turn and soon, Erica was almost crying about her failed love life.Susan observed her in silence, without saying a word.
Susan led her to small room that she had never noticed and she unlocked the door. She stepped in and switch on the light. Erica followed closely behind her. Susan shut the door. The room was almost empty. There was only a small glass table in the middle of the room that was protected by some light ray’s that surrounded it. Erica couldn’t see beyond the walls of light on the table and had to squint her eye because of how bright they were.Susan strolled up to the nearby wall. There was a small calculator like machine that had been fixed on the wall. It had a keypad and a small green screen overheard. Susan punched a code into the machine and behind her, the ray’s of light immediately disappeared into the thin air.Erica let out a short gasped and took a step backwards. Her eyes were round with disbelief over what she had just seen.“What in God’s name is this place, Susan!” She half yelled. Her eyebrows were knitted closely and her stare darted from her sister to the glass table besid
Just like most days, as soon as Richard rolled over in bed in the mornings, the first thing he reached out for was his phone which he always leaves on his bed side table before he went to bed every night. This morning, as he pulled himself out of his Dreamland and tried to force himself to come awake, still with his eyes closed, he rolled over on his bed and began to grope for his phone. He couldn’t feel the bedside table and his eyes flung open. He was lying on his back and his eyes were trained on the ceiling overhead. The hidden air-conditioning unit in the room had made the whole place very cold. He tried to remember where he was. The room was unfamiliar and he couldn’t figure out how he managed to get into that strange bed. He blinked rapidly. Was he drunk the previous night to the point that he had ended up in a strange room? He asked himself in confusion.Where was he? The room had a stark difference to his regular hostel room where he slept every night with his two roommates. I
“What major did you do in the University? “ James asked, puffing hard on his cigarette.“Human Psychology” Richard replied.“So, besides helping out in the temple, what else did master Kai teach you when you finished with school?”Richard opened his mouth to talk but he shit it immediately and rolled his answer over at the back of his mind. He was suddenly on alert on how his saviour was asking questions that were beyond the surface level. He was now wary of saying too much than was necessary.“I learnt a good deal of physical combat and karate” He said.James nodded again. He was very pleased with the new things that he had just found out about Richard. “Do you ever have memories of your past? I mean, do you have flashed of the events that happened to you the night before I saved you by the roadside?”Richard shook his head, deliberately avoiding James piercing eyes. He tried to figure out where his saviour was headed to with the personal questions but he was still clueless.Soon, th
Elise sat in front of dressing mirror in her room, worried. She had just stepped out of the bathroom and her long hair was wrapped up in a thick towel. A bigger white towel was around her chest. Her heart hammered within her chest. She was now staring blankly at herShe picked up her phone and swiped through it. There was still no calls or messages from her friends from school. There was a sickening feeling in the pit of her stomach. What manner of disappointment was this? She wondered in half annoyance. She decided to call her boyfriend, David. He had promised her that he was going to spend time with her a day before her birthday. For over two weeks, their relationship had gone almost downhill as David had been two busy for her.He kept cancelling each appointment she made to meet up with him; most of the times, he provided only flimsy excuses as reasons he could not meet her. She was almost getting tired of his nonchalance but, she decided to just talk things out with him. The eve o
Elise had already told the staff downstairs to open up the main door whenever her friends arrived. They got to her place when it was some minutes after 9pm. Elise was already lying on her bed, her heavy duvet covered her from her chin down to her feet. Her phone was besides her and the voice of a man spoke from the phone. It was her boyfriend, David. She had dialed his number without giving it much thoughts and he answered. He apologized that he was caught up in the middle of a crisis as one of his cousins who lived with him in his private apartment outside school, had gotten a sudden asthmatic attack and badly needed to be rushed to the hospital. He then told her that he was going to make it up to her by coming over to see her at her father’s residence, but only for a few minutes, before he would go back to the hospital where his cousin was hospitalized. While still on the call, Elise heard some loud voices downstairs. She jumped out of bed, quickly bade David farewell, ended the cal
Richard had been turning around in bed, trying to catch some sleep. After futile attempts to fall asleep, he decided to just go out of the room and get a glass of water. Perhaps, the coldness of the room made it quite hard for him to fall asleep as fast as he wanted..He had gotten used to falling asleep in a room that had a warm temperature—his shared hostel room at school had an air-conditioning unit that was only turned on during the early hours of the morning, so he always had to fall asleep with sweat all over his body.It was quite hard for Richard to adapt to this new life, but it didn’t take him long to get used to it. Now, he was sleeping in a room where the air-conditioning unit was constantly running. He sniffed and pulled off the heavy bedsheets that was on his body. Then, he pushed himself up and got out of bed. He slipped his feet into his padded skippers that were by the bed and he headed out of the room. The hallways was quiet and the kitchen was only a few rooms away
The following morning, Elise was woken up with a splash of water on her face. She opened her eyes to meet smiling faces staring down at her. Her mind reeled. She had gone to bed earlier, thinking about Richard’s words the previous night. She knew that what he said was only to help her and bring her back to reality so she would know how much worth she carries, but yet she still felt a certain strange feeling about her relationship with David. She was willing to give him one more chance to make things right. Her mother’s Primary goal was to make sure she didn’t end up with any man that was as below her standards. As she thought about how complicated her relationship with David had gotten, she dozed off.She was still staring in confusion at the other women. She raised her head up and water dropped from her hair. Her eyes fell on the glass of water in Juliet’s hands.“Elise!” Juliet squealed, flashing a bright smile at her. “Sorry, I had to pour you water. You know the tradition! The bir
