Chapter Nine

"Kael decided to press Lena and Marcus for more information about their advantage. He leaned forward, his eyes locked on Lena's.

"Okay, I'm intrigued," Kael said. "What kind of friends do you have in high places? And what kind of help can they offer?"

Lena smiled, seeming to enjoy the cat-and-mouse game. "Let's just say that our friends are... influential," she said. "They have access to resources and information that can help us take down the employer and his operation."

Kael's eyes narrowed. "What kind of resources?" he asked.

Marcus spoke up, his voice low and serious. "We're talking about access to advanced technology, hacking tools, and intelligence networks," he said. "Our friends can provide us with the tools and information we need to take down the employer and his operation."

"Sure, what's up?" Sarah asked, trying to sound casual.

Kael sat down next to her, trying to get a better read on her emotions. "I've noticed that you seem a little... off," Kael said, trying to choose his words carefully. "Is everything okay?"

Sarah sighed, and looked down at her hands. "I don't know, Kael," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I've been getting these strange messages from our ally, and I don't know why he's sending them or what he wants."

Kael's eyes widened in surprise. "What kind of messages?" he asked, trying to keep his voice calm.
