Guilty

Epic 11

Having innocently walked back to his room, Peter kept searching for Nora with his eyes.

“Haven't heard Jessy's voice”. He mumbled after a short while.

“Jessy, ow Jessy”. Lisa whispered, rubbing her hands all over Peter.

“Perhaps she has slept off”. She whispered while standing up from the beg. With her revealing nightie, she purposely dropped her perfume and in an attempt to pick it up, she bent towards Peter.

“That's too revealing. Jessy might see you”. Peter said with annoyance as Lisa hissed and went to keep herself company in her mirror.

"You're joking, right?" Lisa scoffed, giving Peter an incredulous look. "Jessy's not even here." She rolled her eyes, exasperated by his insistence.

As she stood up from the bed, her revealing nightie left little to the imagination, and Peter couldn't help but feel a twinge of attraction despite his annoyance.

“Babe”. Peter mumbled in a low tone as he sat up on the bed, but Lisa just rolled her eyes on him.

“Any problem?”. She had questioned annoyed.

“Just a little help, but if you can't I can have Nora do it”. Peter murmured.

Lisa's annoyance was discernable as Peter tried to explain himself. "If you wanted Nora's help, why call my name?" she snapped, her eyes narrowed.

"I'm sorry," Peter said, his voice pleading. "I didn't want to disturb your makeup. I'll just go find Nora."

Lisa scoffed, her gaze unwavering. "Do whatever you want," she said, her tone cold. "I don't care."

With that, she turned away, her attention once again focused on her reflection in the mirror.

Lisa didn't stop gazing at Peter until he left. She burst out into a pale of laughter until Peter returned with a burning rage, Lisa's laughter was cut short by Peter's sudden return, his face filled with fury. "What did you do?" he roared, his voice shaking with rage.

"Do what?" Lisa asked, feigning confusion as she placed her lip gloss on the table. "What are you talking about?"

"Where are they?" Peter demanded, his eyes blazing. "Where's Nora and Jessy? You sent them away, didn't you?"

Lisa's confusion turned to shock, her eyebrows shooting up in disbelief. "You're joking, right? I didn't send anyone away. What in the world are you talking about?”. She questioned

“I went to their room and found it empty, they are gone and I am certain you are obviously aware”. Peter kept ranting but Lisa chose to rather remain still.

“Where did they go? Answer me”. Peter thundered.

"How am I supposed to know where they went?" Lisa snapped, her voice rising to match Peter's. "You've already accused me of lying, so why should I try to make sense of your nonsense?"

"They're gone!" Peter roared, his anger spilling over. "We wanted peace, and now they're gone. Are you happy?"

"Maybe she felt guilty for what she did," Lisa retorted, her tone mocking. "Maybe she finally decided to do the right thing and leave. Isn't that what you wanted all along?"

“I'm going to look for them”. Peter mumbled disappointed as he picked up his car key and left. Lisa couldn't hold back her laughter as she immediately burst into a hectic laugh while watching Peter drive out of the compound. "I'm going to look for them," Lisa mocked, her eyes dancing with mischief as she watched Peter drive away. "I hope he doesn't find them," she added, cackling to herself. "If that brat of a girl has any sense, she'll know she's not wanted here."

With a victorious grin, Lisa returned to her mirror, applying her makeup with an extra flourish. "Finally, some peace," she muttered, basking in the silence of the empty house.

Meanwhile, Peter's car sped through the streets, his desperation growing with each passing minute.

Meanwhile, back in the street, Peter describes to every being he sees what Nora and Jessy looked like. He soon contacted Ethan to help out in the search, which Ethan went to her old house and realized her house rent had expired in weeks and someone else already occupied the space, it soon started to rain and his worry got worse. As Peter drove through the rain-soaked streets, his heart sank with each passing second. Ethan's discovery of Nora's vacated house only fueled his anxiety, and the thought of Lisa's complicity in their disappearance made his blood boil.

"Lisa, oh Lisa," he muttered, the anger in his voice almost tangible. "What have you done?"

His car skidded slightly as he rounded a corner, the wet pavement making driving hazardous. But Peter was too consumed by his desperation to notice.

As the rain continued to pound against his windshield, Peter's search became increasingly frantic. He turned down alleyways and side streets, frantically searching for any sign of Nora or Jessy.

His cell phone rang, and he answered it without taking his eyes off the road. "Ethan? Any news?" he asked, his voice cracking.

"I'm sorry, Sir," Ethan replied, his tone sombre. "I checked her former workplace, but it looks like they haven't been there in weeks. There's no sign of them anywhere. Perhaps we can continue to look for her tomorrow. I'm certain she is safe".

“I won't stop until I find them, but then, thank you, you can go have some rest now”. Peter was still on the call when Lisa's call came in, but Peter angrily ignored the call.

“I just can't wait to watch you leave my house”. He whispered to himself. He soon got a “help me” text message from Lisa, which he successfully ignored.

As Lisa's calls and texts went unanswered, Peter's anger towards her only grew.

"You'll be out of my house soon," he muttered, his mind already envisioning her departure. "And I'll make sure you never come back." He mumbled, the rain continued to pour, blurring his vision as he drove, not until he finally gave up and went back home.

In front of the house, Lisa was already standing there, fuming, waiting impatiently for Peter's return. As he approached, her words spilt out like a torrent. " You saw my calls right? Even my text, yet you ignored them, you ignored me because of those nuisances! Not for one day have you been intimate with me, yet we sleep on the same bed. What am I to you? A piece of furniture or something close to that? Am I not as pretty as her?" she demanded, her voice a mixture of hurt and fury.

Peter's eyes were clouded with tears, a stark contrast to his usual composure. "Can I pass?" he asked softly, his tone conveying the pain he felt.

With a sharp sigh, Lisa stood aside, letting him enter without another word.

Just like a zombie, Peter tirelessly walked down to his room and laid down on the bed, while watching his pillow get soaked with his tears.

“Are you that sad?”. Lisa mumbled concerned as she gently tip-toed into the room.

“Just let me be for tonight”. Peter pleaded as he stood from his bed and headed to his other room, where he bolted the door and wept tirelessly.

As the hours passed, Lisa grew weary, her eyes drooping with exhaustion and in an attempt to speak to Peter, she eventually gave up, curling up in a ball in front of Peter's door.

The first rays of dawn painted the sky, illuminating the figure of Lisa huddled on the floor. She stirred, her eyes fluttering open to the sound of footsteps from the other side of the door. The sound of the footsteps, heavy and hesitant, awoke Lisa from her slumber. She sat up, her hair dishevelled and her eyes bleary from the lack of sleep.

Peter emerged from the room, his face haggard and unshaven. His eyes were rimmed with red, evidence of the tears he had shed the night before.

"Lisa," he whispered hoarsely.

Lisa scrambled to her feet, her heart racing. "I'm sorry, let's go find them". She whispered with guilt.

Scarcely glaring at her, “Good morning”. Peter whispered as he walked out through a small space. Lisa couldn't stop looking at him as he went over to the dining. Having followed him, Lisa observed how cold he was.

“Let me help you”. She offered as Peter brought out the teacup.

"I'll help myself," he said, turning on the heater and beginning to make his tea.

The steam from the hot water swirled around him, enveloping him in its warmth. Lisa, standing nearby, could feel the heat of the heater and the tension in the room. As she watched in silence, Peter made his tea.

“I'm sorry”. Lisa muttered in between breaths. With a glance at her, Peter continued with his tea. He brought out three slices of bread from the bread nylon, his gaze remained fixed on the bread as he slowly ate, his mind seemingly elsewhere. Lisa watched him with bated breath, waiting for him to speak.

When he finally did, his words were quiet, yet they held a weight that hung heavy in the air. "I'll be going to my family's house," he said, his eyes still distant. "Might stay for two days."

Lisa's heart ached as she heard his words, the tears rolling down her cheeks betraying her efforts to remain composed. "Because of me?" she whispered, her voice trembling.

“I'll be back in two days”. Peter whispered but in an attempt to leave the dining, Lisa immediately grabbed his shirt, He stood still as she pressed herself against him, her lips seeking solace in his. "I'm sorry," she murmured, her tears betraying her.

Peter gazed at her, his eyes searching for something, anything, that might show a hint of remorse, a glimmer of sincerity. But what he saw was only a desperate attempt to keep him close.

"You're not going to change," he whispered, his words laced with disappointment. With a gentle but firm hand, he pried Lisa's arms from his waist and stepped back. "I'm still going."

“I will change, please! Bring them back. We can go find them, I'm deeply sorry”. Lisa apologized as tears poured down her eyes.

“Then tell me the truth, did Nora leave on her own or did you send her away ?”. Peter's words hung in the air as Lisa searched for truth.

“Nothing but the truth”. Peter added. With panic, Lisa bent her head in shame "I asked her to leave," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "I'm sorry. I wasn't comfortable with her being here."

Peter watched her, his expression a mixture of hurt and betrayal. "You knew what it took me just to plead with Nora to leave her job and part-time work, just to be here…" he said, his voice filled with disbelief. "How could you do that?"

Lisa's tears continued to flow, her body trembling as she tried to find the words to explain herself. "I was afraid of losing you," she whispered, her voice choked with emotion.

“The word “I am sorry” is always easy to say, but what about the impact? Do you realise that their rent expired and someone already moved into their house? With that heavy pour of rain from yesterday night, do you realize the tendencies of that innocent child catching a cold? Now where do you want us to find them?”. Peter let out annoyed.

“Perhaps the subway, did you check there?”. Lisa whispered and with a pause, Peter gazed at her.

“That's right, the subway. I need to go now”. He said with a snap while grabbing his car Key.

“Can I come with you?”. Lisa muttered as she crossed her hands in front of her, her face filled with so much guilt.

“Okay”. Peter muttered while reaching out for her hand.

“Thank you”. Lisa whispered as she reached out for his hands, and hastily they rushed down to the car while driving down to the subway. Peter's heart kept racing as they got closer to the subway, Lisa noticed the anxiety within him and gently grabbed his hand.

“We will find them”. She whispered and gently placed a kiss on it.
