Chapter three

Parker nodded and went in. After a while, Parker returned with a loaf of bread. "How much for it?" I asked.

"Give us all that you have," Parker said as he placed the bread on the counter. Normally I would have ignored and left due to their insulting words from earlier but the hunger in me was greater. I took out my money and Parker snatched it out of my hands.

He shoved the bread into my hands and gave a smug smile, "Enjoy your meal." Parker added and both he and Gus looked like they were trying to hold back their laughter.

If only I knew what was coming to me.

I happily entered my house with the mindset that I was finally going to fill my stomach no matter what the bread would taste like. I opened the bread as soon as I sat down.

Just as I tore the bread in half, cockroaches flew out, causing me to throw the bread at the far corner of the living room. I could only imagine the amount of laughter that Gus and Parker were getting at just the thought of the outcome of their prank on me.

I cried again but then wiped off my tears before they could drop. What sort of a life was I living for me as a man not to have any respect whatsoever? Have I deemed a man?

Oh, what I would give to live the lives of those rich people out there. Those people who had it easy and could make anyone bow to their feet.

I got on my feet and went to my room after having to slam myself against it just so it would get opened. My last comfortable sleep in this house. Though I doubt sleeping on an empty stomach could ever be comfortable no matter how soft the bed is.

I closed my eyes in bed and waited for sleep to take over, with the hope that my hunger would help end my life in my sleep.

Once again, I heard banging sounds coming from the front door, and this time I had no intention of getting off of the bed. The banging persisted. I opened my eyes and looked at the clock which I dragged out from underneath my bed with my

I tried to ignore the knocking again as I saw it was too early for it because it was only twelve-thirty. Ignoring it did not cause it to stop and so I got up in anger. Was the landlady that desperate to get rid of me?!

I left my room and went to answer the door. On reaching the front door, I was very ready to fire back at the landlady. What I did not expect was for things to take such a wild turn.

I opened the door and instantly someone fell into my arms. It was dark but I could tell it was a female. She felt weak and moist for some reason.

"Help me," she said to me. I dragged her inside and closed the door. I laid the woman on the floor and struggled in the dark living room to find and light a lamp.

I froze in horror when I saw her entire stomach area covered in blood. I squatted beside her and checked only to find out the woman had been shot and would die at any minute.

The fear gripped me because a strange woman who was about to die was lying down in my house and did not allow me to think straight. My hand was shaking like crazy and I did not know what my next move would be.

My heart seized and only seemed to let out painful beats. My mouth did not move and I could not get them open to speak because I was already struggling to breathe properly.

Who was she and why did she come knocking on my door? Was she being chased by someone? I had to get her out of my house quickly. What the hell did I just get myself into?

"T... Trevor... I need to find..." she said and winced in pain. "I need to find Trevor," she said.

I shook my head and pinched myself in the hope that I was dreaming but no, everything was happening live and before my eyes. How did she know my name when I had no clue who she was?

But how much of a coincidence can such a thing be? That someone can come into a stranger's house and ask for that stranger, saying that stranger's precise name.

No-no. Maybe she was referring to a different Trevor. I am not the only Trevor after all. "Sorry, madam but I think you have gotten the wrong person," I said to her, too scared to ask about how the injuries came to be.

"I will die soon... Please come closer..." she said to me. I remained standing, hesitating to move any closer to her.

"There is no time left Trevor... Please..." she begged me. I went ahead to kneel beside her. I did not know what else to do. There was no way I could help her. She was already a goner.

"Your full name is Trevor Vandelson. I am your aunt Victoria..." The woman said to me. I thought she was going crazy. My surname was chase

"You do not believe me but I can prove it," she said to me. "You have a birthmark on the left side of your chest shaped like a lion's mane," she added, with much effort.

I could not believe my ears. I knew that this woman was telling the truth about the birthmark but I had to check again just in case.

"What happened? How come you are like this? And my parents... They had told me in the past that I had no other relatives still alive, so how come?" I had many questions to ask but there was so little time left.

"Those people... They were not your... biological parents..." the woman said. "Trevor... I do not have time to explain... You have to run... Your life... Your life is in danger... Your cousins are after me and will... They will kill you too if they find you." she struggled to explain to me.

I panicked and got up from beside her in fear, "Take this..." she said, showing me a pendant she had taken out of her pocket. The woman raised her hand towards me and I reluctantly accepted the pendant.

"Go to your grandfather at the top of Mount of fractures and give it to him. Only he will choose the right time for you to know everything. You will have to undergo special training under him first..." those were the woman's last words and she froze in her state.

What special training was she talking about?

I waved my hand above her eyes and there was no reaction. That was it. She had died. I put the pendant in my pocket and put the dim lamp on the floor as I tried to think of what my next move would be.

Oh shit! Who am I kidding?! The police would arrest me if I went to them and they will not believe a word I say. And if I run away I might find my face in wanted signs next. What should I do?!

In the middle of my thoughts and the overwhelming darkness, the door flung open and as it did, turned off what light remained of the lamp.

At the door, I spotted two silhouettes in the form of two men standing. They had not seen me as I was distant from the woman and the house was so dark.

"So this is where our mother came to die?" one of the men spoke up.
