Chapter 004 - Elite Party

The grand party is filled with vibrant colors, music, and lights. Guests are dressed in their finest and are dancing. Buffet tables are set with crystal glasses, dishes, and food. The aromas of sweet desserts, savory meats, bread, coffee, and flowers fill the room.

Rohan stands stiffly as Kaydance Walton smiles at their greeters. Kyndra should have been the one attending, but now Kaydance and Rohan have to substitute.

“Why are there too many people?!” she complains, her arms interlaced on his. “I thought this is a gathering of the elite? It’s not elite if there’s a lot!”

Rohan still thinks the number is small. Less than a hundred for the entire country.

“Do something, dog!” Kaydance orders.

Rohan ignores her command. His shoulders ache from Kendrick’s hit yesterday, and he is uncomfortable wearing a black tuxedo while others wear colorful gowns and suits. Thankfully, he only had to stay until Kendrick’s announcement.

“There are a lot of handsome actors here. Dog, make yourself handsome,” Kaydance orders, still acting worse than a teen. “Ugh, why is Macy hanging her pig arms on that actor?!”

A server offers them drinks. Rohan chugs his cocktail while Kaydance sips hers. Then, she shoves him aside, warning him not to cause any trouble, and strides toward another handsome actor.

Kaydance is about to talk to him when Leone appears. She embraces the actor and kisses both of his cheeks. Rohan ponders if they have a special bond. Is he one of her dogs?

Leone smiles at Rohan before she departs the party. Kaydance returns to Rohan’s side, grumbling about Leone taking all the handsome men.

Rohan doesn’t understand why Kaydance is jealous. She didn’t know the actor that much. Maybe because she never got a chance for romance? Kyndra said her parents gave her everything, but nothing for love.

“Come!” Kaydance orders and points at the car. “See? I’m right! She’s taking him somewhere!”

Leone notices them and blows them a kiss, but Kaydance is unimpressed. Right then, applause erupts inside, taking their attention away from Leone. When they look back, Leone and the actor are gone.

With no other choice, they return to the party. The air hums with conversation and the sound of utensils, but Rohan feels a negative energy.

“We should head back home,” he whispers.

“Why?” Kaydance protests.

Lewis appears, asking Kaydance to a private booth.

Rohan’s face scrunches up. “Private booth?”

Kaydance smiles while she appraises the young man. Seeing that he passes her standards, she places her hands in his and says, “My pleasure.” They walk away, hand in hand.

Now that Kaydance is gone, Rohan trudges towards the exit, but he suddenly feels lightheaded and trips.

He is still trying to make sense of everything when someone grabs him by the neck. His warm breath tickles his ear. “Finally, the drug worked!”

“Now, we are going to start with the real fun!”

Rohan tries to speak, but only a muffled sound emerges. He is forced to stand up while fingers tighten around his throat as he struggles. All the remaining guests stare coldly at him. A tall man forces him to sit on a chair.

“Wa–”

He hears a click behind him, followed by Kaden’s voice announcing, “We will not hurt you. We just need you to do a little something for us.”

“Why do I feel so weak….” he asks.

“There is a drug on the cocktail we gave you.”

“Kaydance drank the same cocktail,” he breathes fearfully. “Does she know? She’s too young...”

“She’s safe and doesn’t need to know.” Kaden presses the nozzle of the gun against the back of his head. “Now, will you help us?”

Rohan swallows hard. “What do you want from me?”

Kaden clicks his tongue. “You need to sign a contract. It says you’ll donate half of your inheritance to Kendrick’s political campaign and the other half to a faux non-government organization.”

Is this what Leone was warning him about yesterday?

“The preparations took a while, but here are the documents.” Kaden places the contract in front of him and repeatedly prods the gun at the back of his head. “Will you agree to these terms?”

“You are insane,” Rohan grits his teeth. “Your family is rich already. Why do you need my money?!”

“Elections for national positions need a lot of money.”

Rohan notices that all the guests are armed. No matter what happens, he’s in deep trouble. So, he signs the documents, and Kaden hands them to an older man.

“Very good, dog,” Kaden says.

Suddenly, Kaden’s gun slams into his right cheek, and he stumbles back. Rohan wipes the blood off his nose as he realizes he will be beaten up again. “You said you would let me go.”

Kaden rolls his eyes. “I did. I said I would let you go after our discussion. And by discussion, I meant you are going to listen to me. And by listen, I meant you will listen to my fist until you can’t anymore.”

“Kaden, you promised we could take out our frustration on him,” a guest reminds him.

“Ah, right? It seems like you’ll discuss with others, dog.”

The men grab Rohan and some locks the door. The dim lights illuminate the room as they punch his face and stomach while cussing at him. He collapses on the ground, numb and in pain.

Exhausted and overwhelmed with despair, he could not summon the energy to fight back. Someone drags him by the hair to a table and holds him down, preventing him from breathing or making out who his attackers are. He attempts to push himself up, but the combined weight of two people keeps him in place.

Someone stabs him, followed by another person thrusting a blade into his side. Rohan rolls over the table, tasting his blood in his mouth as exhaustion overwhelms him. He decides not to feel anymore–No more pain, humiliation, or fear.

Rohan lay still, death looming. His body trembles and his breath fades away. Tears trail down his cheeks as he realizes how much of his life has gone to waste. Darkness embraces him. All that is left is a profound regret that he could have done better.
