Chapter Five

Bianca had filed for divorce. Elijah was not completely stunned by the divorce because she had openly referred to him as her ex-husband inside all that disgusting nakedness. However, he was angry at how quickly the divorce papers had gotten to him. She couldn't even wait to present it to him personally, so she went through his friend.

"Is she that desperate to get rid of me from her life? For something that just happened, the divorce papers came in really fast."Elijah said, his upper lip curled in distaste and disdain, as he placed the papers on the side table.

Marcus sighed, "It shows that she was prepared to divorce you man, yesterday just presented her with the right opportunity to pull it through. I'm not sure I should even be saying this, but she called me last night to come pick it up at the bar where you work."

Elijah remained quiet. The wheels in Elijah's head began to turn, looking for ideas on how he would make Bianca and her partner suffer. So after he had been tossed into the trunk of a vehicle, knocked out cold, Bianca had been calling her lawyers to prepare divorce papers for him. How sweet, Elijah thought.

Marcus's voice interrupted his train of thought, when he asked, "Do you think it's going to appear in the news?"

"I don't give a flying fuck."

Marcus nodded. He looked at Elijah, worry etched on his face as he observed Elijah's body wrapped up in hospital material.

Elijah went back to his thoughts about revenge. He told himself that before he could implement his plan he had to get out of the hospital and build his empire. Elijah imagined a world where he would triple whatever income his grandfather's company generated. A world where he would become invisible and untouchable. A world where everyone would want to be associated with him. They would fight to do business with him. He would be powerful.

As he thought of his plans, the door opened again, and Doctor Ethan whom Elijah recognized as their family doctor, walked in, his grandfather, Lucas and his sister Cora followed him, hot on his trail. His grandfather was a tall, attractive man even in his old age. He had a special cane he used to support himself when walking. Lucas wasn't always like that, but after a fatal accident that almost led to an amputation of his legs, he began to limp, requiring the use of a cane. Lucas was a splitting image of his late father, so he never really missed the absence of his father since the age of 17 because he saw his grandfather as his father.

Elijah looked at Cora who had an unreadable expression on her face, as she always did. But he knew deep down she was worried about him, and he could bet his inheritance that she wasn't going to voice it out. He looked closely and noticed that there was another expression in her eyes that he couldn't quite describe. Was that worry? Or fear?' Cora never wore any expression on her face, and that worried him.

As Doctor Ethan approached his bed, Marcus rose from the chair and offered it to Lucas. They all exchanged pleasantries before they returned their attention to Elijah. Doctor Ethan reached over, leaning slightly over Ethan's body to check his vitals or whatever it was they checked on their patients.

Then he leaned back and chuckled as he said. "You are finally awake. Welcome back to the land of the living."

Elijah and everyone else looked back at him, squinting their eyes. Nobody responded kindly to his joke. The Doctor shuffled his feet as he cleared his throat and continued speaking, "Anyway your body needed the rest, given what it has gone through."

The Doctor cleared his throat the more, which was beginning to get on Elijah's nerves. He watched a look pass between the doctor and his grandfather, and his grandfather even gave a small nod of his head, which had not gone unnoticed by Elijah. His eyes darted between the two men. “What is going on?" Elijah asked both men. Nobody replied to him. "I can tell that something is wrong so can we keep the bad news rolling in since there seems to be a lot of it going around today?" said, his tone dripping with sarcasm.

When none of the men responded, Elijah attempted to get up from the bed, but Cora's hands stopped him. In all honesty, he couldn't have risen even if he had wanted to, because his body screamed back at him, but he desperately wanted to know what was going on.

Finally, the doctor said, "Elijah, you won't be able to use your legs for a while."
