With a rage incomparable to the one he had felt on the evening he had caught Bianca's cheating ass, he threw the bottle he was holding at the wall once again. He grabbed his laptop and tossed it in the same direction. He yelled at the top of his lungs and his door flew open, revealing two terrified faces, Cora and the maid who had previously come up to clean.
He could see it in the eyes of the maid. She thought he was crazy, while the eyes of his sister held anger and irritation. Cora turned away from him to look at the mess he had created behind him. When her eyes fell on the laptop, she walked further into the room and bent down to pick up the laptop. The laptop was already broken, with the screen divided in half, the top half was working and showed the headline of what angered Elijah, while the bottom half had gone dark.
Cora walked over to Elijah, and slowly read aloud the text that her eyes had landed on. "The beautiful heiress, Bianca Gardini, and the most sought-after billionaire Fred Harkins tie the knot."
A sinister smile appeared on Cora's face. "Did I not tell you that these people are living their best life, and everything about you has been long forgotten?"
Elijah's nose flared, "So you knew already?"
"Oh no, I didn't. But it's good to know that I wasn't wrong about what I said." Cora stated as she placed the already damaged laptop on the table in front of Elijah, turning it at the perfect angle so that if Elijah moved his eyes just a little, they would immediately be on the headlines.
"How could they do this to me, Cora?"
"You did this to yourself. Yes, I know they started it, but it's in your hands to either finish it or start a new chapter."
Elijah rolled himself to the large mirror that was placed in one corner of his room. He could see the maid's reflection in the mirror. Elijah could see an expression of fear mixed with curiosity on the maid's face. Did she think he was going to break it too?
He stared back at himself for a while. He examined himself, from the dark curls on his head because he had not let any barber touch him, to his hazel eyes and then his beard which was once a clean stubble. He continued to study himself, and then finally his eyes fell on his feet that were on the footrest of the wheelchair.
Elijah took a deep breath and held it in for a while, before slowly releasing it. He lay his hands on the armrest of his wheelchair. Then slowly he pulled his legs off the footrest and placed them on the cream rug that had been used in decorating his room. With controlled movements, he gripped the armrest of the wheelchair to lift himself, but he fell back into the chair.
At Elijah’s display, Cora and the maid moved closer, a few meters away from their original spot, but Elijah quickly raised his hands and shook his head. He tried four different times and was met with the same outcome. He opened his mouth and let out a sigh, the ligament at the side of his neck was pulsating. One more time Elijah placed his hands on the armrest.
He searched for Cora's face in the mirror and met an expressionless face. Elijah would have loved to see something, anything on her face. Sometimes he wondered how a 20-year-old behaved so much like an 80-year-old. A look passed between brother and sister, and Cora nodded at him, giving him the motivation to try again. He could see her lips moving in the mirror, forming the words "It is time to repay the ones who hurt you."
Elijah glanced at his reflection and replayed his sister's words in his head. Then he raised his voice and declared, "I am Elijah Morris, and it's time to repay those who hurt me." He seized the armrest so firmly that for a moment he feared that a vein could pop, but that did not stop him. Elijah used his strength, will, and a renewed thirst for revenge to propel himself up.
This time he stood just long enough to look up and smile before falling back into his chair. The smile on his face stayed even after he took out his phone from his shirt pocket and dialed a number. He held the phone to his ear and said "It's time."
"My handsome grandbaby." came a deep voice, as a cane struck the ground from the entrance of the office Elijah was sitting in. Elijah turned to face his grandfather, Lucas, who had a broad smile on his face. He had been sitting in his grandfather's office for almost five minutes, waiting for his arrival."Grandpa, I'm not a baby anymore.""Oh, you're not. My eyes must be playing tricks on me then."Lucas’ eyes twinkled as he spoke to Elijah, and his lips twitched as if he was trying to stop himself from smiling too much. Elijah squinted his eyes at Lucas as he replied. "We both know that your eyes are working quite alright. All I'm saying is that calling me a grandbaby at 30 years of age is embarrassing."Lucas walked into the room with a style in his steps, as he used his cane that had a golden eagle's head at the top of it for support. He moved around the desk and sat in his office chair. "Till the day I die, you will remain my grandbaby." Elijah scoffed. Lucas picked up the pack o
Elijah and Lucas looked up to see who had shouted. When Elijah saw the person's face, he gripped the armrest of his wheelchair as his eyes sized up the very person that had caused him to be in a wheelchair. Lucas glanced behind him to see if the man had been talking to anyone other than them. "I know you" Fred Harkins stated as he approached the two men, his attention directed at Elijah. "Or I think I do. You look very familiar." Elijah and Lucas just kept looking at Fred as he spoke. Fred’s face was scrunched up as he observed Elijah in the wheelchair. He moved his head from one side to another as he looked at Elijah up and down, accessing Elijah’s expensive outfits and accessories, just as Elijah was accessing him, his eyes drawn to the wedding band on Fred's wedding finger. Fred extended his hands towards Lucas and the two men exchanged a handshake with Lucas saying "Congratulations on your wedding."Elijah was silently watching the men's interaction, wishing that Fred would not
Two years laterElijah pulled into his mall's parking space. It had been up to four months since his last visit, and he needed to see things for himself after reading on a blog that some of the employees had been speaking rudely to customers.Elijah had created an empire for himself, a powerful corporation known to everyone in Manhattan City. He started from EM Airways, and a few months later he built a mall called EM Mall close to the airport. A few more months went he became the owner of EM Restaurant where all kinds of cuisines, and celebrities had to book reservations in a month.Everyone knew the brand "EM," but only five people knew the face behind EM. Elijah's initial plan was for only his grandfather, his sister, his lawyer, and his best friend to know the man behind EM. But somewhere along the way, he revealed himself to his Vice President during one of his meetings. From the very beginning, Elijah started holding his meetings with his EM Airline team via video call. He had
What? Are you certain? Try it again." The cashier looked at Elijah, her lips curled upwards, as she eyed Elijah up and down before reluctantly trying the card on the machine again. Another beep came from the machine and the cashier flung the card towards Elijah who quickly caught it. The lips of the cashier lifted into a snare as she spoke to Elijah. "The card was declined again. You either give me a card that is working or get out of this store."Elijah paused at her use of words before he asked, "Are you sure there's nothing wrong with your machine?" The cashier laughed hysterically. As quickly as she had started laughing, she stopped. "It's you that something is clearly wrong with. You walked in here like you own the place like you can afford to get the things in here, dressed in a common shirt and jean trousers, but it's obvious that you are a poor wretched man who probably borrowed his friend's clothes when he has absolutely nothing in his pocket." Elijah looked at the cashier
He turned to face the direction where his name had been called, and right in front of him was Bianca and Fred. Oh shit, Elijah thought. This was not supposed to be happening in their presence. Things were not going as he planned, so he decided to end the show before it got out of control. He reached into his other pocket to bring out his real card when Sara looked at Bianca and asked. "Ma, do you know this man?" Bianca hesitated. She looked unsure of whether to answer or not. Her eyes flickered between Elijah's and Sara's before she answered. "Yes, I do. I'm even surprised that he is in this kind of store because I know for certain that he is poor." Fred looked at his clothing and asked, "Elijah why are dressed like that? Did you steal the outfits? I'm impressed at your audacity, to think that you can afford to buy clothes from this kind of high-end store. Does your shame have no limits? But just look at you. You can take the man out of the trash but not the trash out of the man."
Oh my God! I can't believe that just happened. It was amazing to watch the looks on their faces, gosh!" Cora said as she sipped from the cup of God knows what kind of liquid she was holding. Elijah stared at her lips as they moved, but his thoughts were elsewhere. "This is poor Elijah," those were the words Bianca had used to describe him. They had no idea what his influence or position in the country was, otherwise, they would have crawled at his feet, begging to do business with him. Today's display at the mall made him desire to put his plans into action. He was going to deal with them like a tapeworm feeding on their host without their awareness of it. "Cora, I have to leave right now, I have a meeting by 1 p.m and if I don't get moving right now, I will come off as a tardy person, and I don't want that. At least, not with whom I'm meeting. The short movie that happened with your employees has already taken up my precious time." His words brought out a mocking expression on Cor
Fred's back was to Elijah while he spoke with the receptionist. Elijah overheard the receptionist telling Fred that she needed to confirm his appointment. He sighed and mentally braced himself for what he was sure was going to come from Fred. He moved closer to the desk and coughed gently, announcing his presence to the two unaware people.Fred was the first to turn in his direction. Fred began to snicker immediately their eyes met. He rested his elbow on the counter and leaned on the desk, his eyes roaming over Elijah's clothes before speaking. "So because you threw on a borrowed jacket on an obviously borrowed outfit, you think you can waltz in here like you own the place? Whatever happened at EM Mall cannot happen here, I'm sure of that." Elijah clenched and unclenched his teeth as returned Fred's stare. From the corner of his eye, he could see the receptionist's hands were caught in the middle of a call. She had paused when she heard Fred degrading him, the stranger, whose name s
Elijah walked towards the elevator, grinning as each step brought him closer to the elevator. He entered the lift and clicked on the button that would take him to the last floor. Before the elevator doors closed, he raised his head to look at Fred, who was watching his every move. He looked like he was about to explode, and Elijah burst into the laughter he had been trying so hard to keep inside. The receptionist's words had stopped him from pouncing on Fred and venting his anger. He liked how Fred had been reduced to something small in front of him. Elijah was glad that he had texted Mr Lewis in the car to inform him of his arrival. He had not planned to do it, but he was grateful that he did. That move was the only reason why the business tycoon had expressly asked of him.The elevator stopped and the doors opened. Elijah got out and was greeted by a lady who then instructed him to follow her. They walked down a hallway for a few seconds before she came to a stop in front of a larg
