55 years ago, a little girl watched her mom struggle to get on from day to day. Her father died when she was just one, leaving her mother with two kids to raise.

Whatever she did, people never saw the hood, no one wanted to marry a “half-woman” as they called single mothers then.

Securing even a place to stay was as tiring as birthing a child.

“Ma’am, we can’t let a single woman with no husband and two kids stay here. It can bring a lot of trouble, what happened to your husband?” They thought she was one of those loose women out there.

Her mother breathed pain, lived in misery, and died unhappily.

Even though the world has gotten better than it was then, single mothers are still stigmatized daily. Her daughter doesn’t tell her but she knows, she sees it in her eyes; carrying a bump around with no man to show.
