The Son of The Unseen

CHAPTER 4

The news of that cyclops incident circulated all over Alexander’s town in just one night. The information said that a knight has defeated the monster but the name of that knight is confidential, says the Royal Knights Legion. However, the one who really beat that monster and severed its head is none other than Alexander who now laid in bed, resting and healing the injuries he had suffered during that showdown. Jane, Alexander’s mother questioned her son on how did he defeated it especially when Alexander doesn’t even know how to fight nor to defend himself. But Jane did not pester her son and thought that asking those questions may bring some nightmares to him. What she didn’t know is that Alexander, despite being utterly exhausted and with his body aching all over, has been thinking of the black smoky figure that appeared in his mind when he was unconscious. Alexander couldn’t bring himself to ask his mother about it since he thinks that his mother will not have a clear answer for him, and another is that his mother might not know anything about what he is going to ask. So, he decided to just lie in bed and slept. A week has passed and the topic of a cyclops being decapitated is still hot as fire. With no information on who killed it, the townsfolk started to create speculations and theories on who really defeated it. And what is the most interesting among the made-up stories is that the reason on why the head of the cyclops is missing is that it was stolen by one of the knights, cleaned it and hanged it on a wall like a trophy or something. Alexander is now back in good health, and it was like nothing happened. It was like he wasn’t almost beaten to death by a hungry monster. Today is a lovely Monday morning, and Alexander started to dress up and head for work. And when he was about to go outside, his grandmother suddenly came down from their second floor.

“And where do you think you’re going, Alexander?” his grandmother asked.

Alexander then removed his straw hat and turned around to look at her.

“To the farm. I’ve been absent for a week now, and I need to go to work so we can eat.” He answered.

His grandmother sighed and then she called Alexander’s mother and told her what he just said. Alexander put his hat back on and then…

“Alexander Eirenopoios!” Jane screamed from the second floor.

Alexander scratched his head and took off his hat again. His grandmother smirked at him and said good luck to him as he passed and went up the stairs. He entered the room on his left and there he saw his mother, sitting up straight, arm crossed across her chest and wearing an angry expression on her face. Alexander put his straw hat on his chest and slowly approached his mother that is totally enraged. He stopped just a few inches away from her and bowed his head like his mother is a queen that is about to give orders for his execution. And as he looked into her eyes, he quickly avoided eye contact since those eyes are much more terrifying than the cyclops’.

“My dear and beloved son, care to explain why do you want to work?” she asked and waited for an acceptable answer.

Alexander then explained to her calmly that he needs to work in order to provide food and other necessities that they need. He also told her that he seriously has to go back to work because if he doesn’t, then his boss might fire him. And that will be an unfortunate thing since finding a job in this kingdom is difficulty, especially when you are born in the outskirts. People tend to underestimate you and judge you based on your status. But all of his explanations are out in vain as his mother did not agree to it. He tried to beg but it was the same result.

“Do you think thatj I, your mother will allow you to go back to that farm and pass through the same woods where you were attacked by a monster just a week ago?! Are you out of your mind?! Because I’m not!” she snapped.

Alexander tried to reason that it is for their own sake but his mother said that she would rather die from hunger than to one day receive news that her son has been devoured by a monster. They were about to argue some more when someone knocked on their door.

“Help me up, let’s go down.” Ordered Jane.

Alexander quickly lifted her mother up and went down. As they reach the lower floor, the mother and son immediately saw someone standing in front of their door. It was a man with black and curly hair, he had a mustache and wore a very fancy and duke-like clothing. He smiled at Alexander, and when Jane took a look at the man, she suddenly felt nervous and started to shiver with her eyes all widened. Alexander’s grandmother then went to the door and there she also saw the man and stood where she is all frozen. Alexander can’t get a grip on what’s happening, and that’s when he realized that this man must be a representative of the Royal Knights, and he came to formally arrest Alexander for interfering the job of a knight.

The man in front of the door cleared his throat and took a deep breath.

“Family of Eirenopoios, it is my pleasure to be meeting with you, once again,” cheerfully said by the man then he looked at Alexander “And it is my greatest honor to be meeting you at last, sir Alexander.” He added.

And this is the time when Alexander realizes that this man is absolutely a representative, and he thought to himself, “I’m done for.”

They all stood in their positions for a while when Jane did not hesitate anymore,

“Is it time already?” she asked as her voice shook.

The man smiled, “Fortunately, yes Lady Jane,” says the man.

And this confused Alexander. Why would a representative call someone a Lady and Sir since a Knight Representative is known for its rudeness and sharp tongue personality. And this man is now here calling them sir and lady. The thing that most puzzled Alexander is that his mother seems to know this man very well, also his grandmother. Whoever this man is, it has brought either good news or bad news.

“I’m here to formally announce that Mr. Alexander is now being ordered to train under them. And another, his father must be revealed once-and-for-all.”
