The woman in her big hat came to the restaurant at around 3 pm and sat at the very back.

After going over the menu, she waved her hand for her order to be taken.

Sabrina went over, and the woman shook her head.

‘’Sorry, but I would rather for that young man to be my server.’’

‘’Ok…’’

Sabastian found the woman to be odd, with each order he carried out for her, she would give him a hundred dollars.

Then the last order of blueberry pie, she gave him a thousand.

‘’Maybe she wants you to be her sugar baby,’’ Sabrina joked but Sabastian didn’t find it funny.

When the woman left, Paul called Sabastian over.

‘’I saw her passing you something, how much tip did you get?’’

He didn’t see why that was a concern to him.

‘’Hurry it up!’’ Paul yelled.

‘’Just a twenty,’’ Sabastian lied and showed him the two ten dollars he had in his back pocket.

Paul frowned then took them from him.

‘’Why did you do that?’’

‘’If you don’t like it, you can see yourself out.’’

Then Sabastian lost it.

‘’Honestly, what is your problem with me? I didn’t see you giving anyone else here all this shit, you seem to pick on me more than anybody else.’’

Paul sneered at him. ‘’That’s it, get out of here! I don’t need a useless person working here. And good luck finding a job anywhere in this city, I’ll tell every business establishment that you are nothing but a lazy little shit.’’

Sabastin did nothing more than glared at the man.

‘’Get out of here before I call the cops.’’

Seeing all this, Abel threw his apron down.

‘’You know what Paul, I’m resigning. I only work here because of this kid; all your other workers are lazy. And good luck finding another chief.’’

Paul sneered at them, but he only pushed Sabastian.

‘’You think you are all that, but you are nothing more than the gum under my shoe. You will never come out to be anything.

Sabastian left the old restaurant, and head straight to the bank.

He wasn’t going to let what had happened to him just now get him down. He tried to look on the brighter side, telling himself that now he could focus more on his studies.

Thankfully, the bank was as crowded as he thought it would be.

And he walked up to the teller.

‘’I would like to pay 2 thousand and six hundred dollars on my tuition.’’

The teller looked up at him.

‘’Sorry that I don’t have it all in full. But I promise to pay the rest soon.’’

The woman behind the glass gave him a smile.

‘’I’m not the one you need to explain anything to. And can I please get your name and the account number the money is to be paid to.’’

“Sabastian Harley, and the account number is, 503-222-402.’’ He read from the fading paper he dug out of his old, leather wallet.

After typing the numbers into the computer before her, she seemed shocked.

‘’Oh, you don’t need to make any payment. Your tuition was paid in full two days ago.’’

‘’Come again?’’ Sabastian leaned on the counter.

The woman turned the computer for him to see.

‘’See here, someone paid for your schooling up until the last year.’’

‘’You’re joking.’’

She shook her head.

‘’Do you know who did this?’’

The woman shook her head again. ‘’Said here that the person wished to stay anonymous.’’

Sabastian laughed to himself as he left the bank, thinking that Ashley must have been the one to pay for his schooling.

Wanting to do something special for her, Sabastian made his way to the jewelry store across the street.

The moment he entered, the woman who was working as one of the shop sales associates, turned her nose up at him.

‘’And what do you want?’’ she asked, still with a disgusted look on her face.

‘’I want to buy an engagement ring for my girlfriend.’’

Without waiting for her reply, Sabastian walked over to a counter and found what he thought would be the perfect ring, and the best part was that it was within his budget.

‘’I’ll take this one,’’ he pointed at the ring with a small diamond in the middle.

She scoffed at him. ‘’You can’t be for real.’’

‘’Excuse me?’’

‘’You are buying that for your girlfriend? Such a tiny ring, if I were her, I wouldn’t accept your proposal.’’

‘’But you aren’t her, and the size of the ring doesn’t matter. The love we have for each other should.’’

The woman rolled her eyes. ‘’I see that you are a poor man, I don’t know how any woman could be with men like you. Unless she is just as poor and has no standards.’’

Sabastian got angry.

‘’I need to speak with your manager.’’

The woman laughed and walked away.

Soon she came back laughing and talking with a man who wore a three-quarter pants and white button-down shirt.

‘’This is the man, boss.’’

The manager looked Sabastian up and down.

‘’You were right, he isn’t much, just a poor man. Boy, save yourself the embarrassment. No woman will want such a cheap low-class ring, the rich folk in the city only buy this kind of jewelry for their young child’s birthday or for their dolls.’’

‘’Is this how you treat your customers?’’ Sabastian got angry.

‘’No, just the poor ones. Tell you what, why don’t you pass your girl to me? I’ll show her what a real man is like.’’

Sabastian gritted his teeth.

‘’You think you are a real man just because you have money?’’

The manager laughed.

‘’Boy, I’m Lester Callaway. Son of Johnathan Callaway. And my money, makes me more than a real man.’’

‘’Money isn’t all that,’’ Sabastian told him.

Lester scoffed. ‘’Only the poor think that. But anyway, I’ll sell you this ring, just so you see that your girlfriend will leave you. Stupid, poor man.’’

Sabastian took the ring and left, but again he didn’t let their words get to him because he knew Ashley would say yes and they would be happy.

When he got home, he saw Ashley sticking a pair of earrings in her ears.

‘’You’re home early.’’

‘’You’re going out.’’

Ashley looked panicked.

‘’I’m going to my parents’ house; they are having a party.’’

‘’Oh, how come you didn’t tell me this?’’

‘’Well, I didn’t know if you would want to come.’’

Sabastian made a face. ‘’Are you kidding? I like your parents and I can tell that they like me as well.’’

Ashley gave a small smile and nodded.

‘’Go get ready then, I’ll wait here. And please, wear something nice.’’

Sabastian hurried and scrubbed the day away, thinking that at Wilson’s residents would be the perfect place to propose to his girlfriend.

‘’Ok, I’m ready,’’ Sabastian said.

Ashley looked him up and down.

‘’Ok.’’

But Sabastian could tell that she wasn’t pleased.

‘’Do I need to change?’’ He quickly asked, willing to do anything to make her happy.

‘’No, no. We just need to go before traffic.’’

They got into Ashley’s Porsche truck and Sabastian asked if he could drive.

‘’Hell no, and please never ask me that again.’’

He didn’t understand her upset, and even when he tried to make conversation on their way there, Ashley only gave him one-word answers.

‘’Hmm, why were you home so early?’’ Ashley glanced at him when they came to a stop outside her parents’ house.

‘’I got fired.’’

‘’What!’’

‘’Before you get into it, you know how Paul is. I always tell you about him, but I promise that I find a new job.’’

‘’You better.’’

When they got inside the mansion, Ashley immediately left Sabastian’s side, leaving him to feel awkward and out of place.

He walked around for a while, admiring the place.

‘’Wine?’’ a voice asked.

Sabastian turned to see a sever with a tray of drinks.

‘’Thanks.’’

Sabastian quickly spotted Ashely laughing as she talked with a group of rich, and finely dressed people.

She noticed his approach and frowned, but quickly covered it up when he got closer.

‘’Hey,’’ Sabastian said.

All eyes turned to him, and one girl looked at him up and down.

‘’And who is this?’’ A man asked.

‘’Sabastian, Ashley’s boyfriend.’’

‘’Oh,’’ the girl who was looking at him let out.

She whispered something to the female beside her and they laughed.

‘’Hmm, Sabastian, did you see my father?’’ Ashley quickly asked.

‘’No, you left me so suddenly.’’

She began to pull him away.

After a while, Ashely wasn’t by his side anymore, once again leaving Sabastian to feel out of place.

But soon he felt a clap on his back.

‘’It’s Steven right?’’

‘’No sir, Sabastain.’’ He said, holding his hand out towards Mr. Wilson, but the older man turned down the handshake.

‘’It’s a surprise seeing you here,’’

Before he could reply, someone came and pulled Mr. Wilson away.

**

Sabastian was once again by Ashely’s side, but this time she wasn’t surrounded by so many people, and he thought now would be the best time to pop the question.

Ashley’s eyes widened when he went down on one knee.

‘’Sabastian, what are you doing?’’ She looked around and smiled as she noticed all eyes on them.

‘’Ashley Wilson, we have been together for a while now. And it would be an honor if you agree to be my wife. Will you marry me?’’

Ashley covered her mouth, and her eyes widened.

‘’Oh my God, yes!’’

She threw herself at him and a round of applause went up.

‘’Yes,’’ she said again.

Soon she was showing off her ring to her friends.

‘’Wow, it’s so small,’’ one said, acting as if she couldn’t see the stone.

The female standing beside her slapped her shoulder lightly.

‘’Britany, behave. It’s the count that thought and I’m sure the wedding ring will be bigger.’’

‘’Oh, it will be.’’ Ashley smiled.

A man came up beside Sabastian.

‘’She doesn’t want you.’’

‘’What?’’ Sabastian gave him a hard look.

‘’Trust me, you are only wasting your time. Ashely wants a man like me, someone who can provide for her. Not some poor man who can’t even afford a ring.’’

‘’The ring doesn’t matter, it’s our love that does.’’

The man laughed and shook his head.

‘’Trust me, I know her. She only said yes to not hurt your feelings, a man like yourself will never be good enough for her. Your minimum wage paycheck can’t maintain her lifestyle.’’

Sabastian said nothing, because in his eyes, she was happy, showing off her ring and laughing with her friends and family.

Later that night, after getting back to the apartment, Ashely jumped on Sabastian’s back and kissed her neck.

‘’So, when will I get a bigger ring?’’

Sabastian paused. ‘’A bigger ring?’’

‘’Yes, surely this can’t be it. I mean, this looks cheap and might turn my finger green.’’

‘’You looked so happy just now, showing it off.’’

Ashely laughed. ‘’Yes, but this can’t really be it.’’

‘’Well, I guess I have to quit school all together and hope I find a good paying job to get you a better ring.’’

‘’Quit school?’’

‘’Yes, a part time job can’t cut it. Maybe you could ask your father if he could employ me?’’

Ashely gave a little laugh. ‘’I don’t think can happen.’’

‘’Why not?’’

Ashely avoided the question and lay back on the bed.

‘’I’m feeling tired, I think I had too much to drink just now. Good night.’’

Sabastian touched her side and she yelled at him.

''Can't you let me sleep!''

''Ok, sorry. But maybe you can speak with your father for me.''

Ashely never gave a respond.
