CHAPTER THREE

Leon could still feel the breath of the girl on his face, they were pressed so closely together that he felt every inch of her skin, albeit through clothes.

"Don't you want to let me go? They're all gone now." She said, her voice nasty and rude.

Leon was embarrassed and pulled away from her but he didn't see that she too was blushing. She dusted her dress as he looked out and saw that all the gang members were gone, the entire street was now deserted. It was getting dark and Leon had nowhere to return, he wasn't ever going back to his wife, that was for sure.

"Thank God they're gone." The girl said with a sigh and then stopped him as he was about to cross the road.

"Wait, you've just helped me escape those men, I want to reward you." She said,

Leon looked at her, apart from being very pretty, she was also very young and he didn't want any money from her, after all, it wasn't going to help his condition.

"I don't want your money, I just couldn't stand those men trying to hurt you." He said, ignoring her demand to pay him and even finding it rude.

The girl frowned at him, he was intrigued by him, someone who didn't want her money and still had helped her for no cost.

"What's your name?" She asked and he shook his head.

"It doesn't matter, you're fine now, you should get going, it's getting darker out here and it wasn't safe." He warned, his tone cold.

The girl looked around, truly, it was getting dark and she was afraid that the gang might return.

"You're sure you don't want me to compensate you for saving me?" She asked and all that Leon did was sneer at her and she realized that he truly didn't want it.

"Fine, thank you for helping me." She said and Leon nodded but his mind was far off, "But I'm not a child, I don't have a curfew," she said.

Leon shrugged and allowed her to stay next to him but he still lingered by the alley, he did not know where to go - did not have where to go. But little did he know that saving the girl was going to bring him trouble. A few minutes later, he saw a man walk up to him just as he sat on the park bench, throwing his coat over her shoulders to shield her from the cold night air.

"Did you think I wouldn't find you?!" The man asked angrily.

Leon was alert, he knew that the man was speaking about the girl, he quickly pulled her behind him and stood up in defense.

"Leave the girl alone," Leon replied boldly.

But it wasn't going to end that simply, the man dragged him off the chair, throwing the first punch. Leon ducked and delivered a counter punch that caught the gangster right in the temple, he fell over swiftly and clutched his head.

"You've just made a big mistake." A voice from behind him said and Leon turned around, he was faced with a man who was much taller than he was and with a much larger frame, and he wasn't alone.

The rest of the gangsters had returned and there were about seven, they all formed a circle around him, holding bats and rods.  The girl gasped beside Leon and clutched onto his shirt, frightened.

"I knew you were with the girl in the alley, I saw you run away with her, did you think you could hide her from me?!" The man who appeared to be the leader of the gang sneered at him.

"What do you want with her?" Leon asked angrily.

"She belongs to my brother, bring her now or I'll make sure we all teach you a lesson." He snapped.

Leon shook his head, he wasn't going to let them hurt her, he hadn't known her for more than a few minutes but he didn't want any harm to come to her. The leader of the gang ordered all the men to beat Leon and they all descended on him. Leon tried to protect himself but they overpowered him because of their number and the stiff rods and bats they held.

Leon held the girl tightly and protected her from all the blows that landed on him. He didn't let her go. He fell into the mud and tried to shield her as they continued to beat him. Everywhere hurt, his skin was bruised and badly battered when they finally stopped and he looked up.

There was a line of cars parked right before them, forming an arch around them. The doors of the cars flung open all at once and men stepped out, all dressed in black, they moved to the gangsters and stood before them.

The leader of the gangsters was scared, he stepped back and scowled at the new men who had just arrived.

"The mafia king of the city is my brother, what do you want here?" He sneered.

But soon, the last car opened and an old man stepped out.

"Uncle Smith, help me!"  She called out helplessly.

"You are not going anywhere, you belong to my brother! " The gangster said and tried to snatch the girl but the men in black stood in front of him and blocked him.

"Get out of my way, she belongs to my brother, she refused to sleep with him, now she has to pay for such insolence." The gangsters sneered.

"How dare you hurt the daughter of the Caden family?" Uncle Smith said angrily.

The gangsters were shocked, they all knew who the Caden family was. It was the most influential and powerful family in the city. Scared, they all began to plead for forgiveness. The old man sneered at them and said, "For daring to lay a finger on her, I will make sure your gang is terminated!"
