At least a square mile of land was all eaten up by the herculean worm, which also swallowed all the alphas along with it and came soaring straight up toward Verella.

Verella had no time to ponder about the people on the island. She immediately jumped away, and the giant worm went onto gobble up the two halves of the floating institute and all the students and teachers along with it.
