At Pinnacle Investment

The next morning at Albert's family home, all the members gathered around the dining table for breakfast—except for Ryan.

“Where has your good-for-nothing husband gone to, so early morning?” Asked Catherine, gesturing at Kim.

Kim looked at her mother and blinked. Actually, she didn’t know where Ryan had gone so early. All he said to her before leaving was that, he had something important to attend to.

“He’s gone to… Maybe he went to grab something,” Kim responded dejectedly and buried herself back in her plate, hoping to end the conversation.

But it didn’t!

“Are you afraid to admit he went to Barnes’ place to take the money for divorcing you? He probably stayed up all night thinking about it. What a shameless man!” Sydney sneered.

Kim remained silent. In as much as she didn’t want to believe Ryan would collect money from Barnes to divorce, she had no idea where he had gone to.

Who knows, Sydney could be right, especially considering how confident Ryan had been when he promised that Kim would secure the investment deal.

“We should invite the family lawyer over, everything should end today,” Albert said suddenly before drinking some water.

Sydney stared at her father puzzled. “What is the family lawyer supposed to do now?”

“What do you mean? Once that destitute has collected the money and returned, he would sign the divorce papers and the lawyer would take it to the court to finalize the divorce,” explained Albert.

“Huh?”

Kim raised her face to look at her father. “We can’t be so sure Dad. If Ryan was going to sign the divorce papers he would’ve told me. He wouldn’t have possibly gone to collect the money without telling me first”.

Catherine sighed and dropped her fork. She stretched her hand and placed it on her daughter’s.

“Kim, I still don’t know why you have so much faith in that disappointment you call a husband. You should be thrilled that you are finally being liberated from that loser. If he didn’t went to Barnes then where did he go to then? He promised to make sure you secure the deal with Pinnacle, what other way did you think he planned on doing it than leaving you to Barnes”.

Kim was full all of a sudden, she dropped her utensils and went back into her room.

Though she couldn’t think of another place Ryan could have gone than where her family members suggested, she hoped they were all wrong.

Meanwhile at the same time somewhere else in the central part of the city, Ryan walked into a skyscraper with the signage ‘Pinnacle Investment’ boldly hanging on the building’s façade.

Inside, he walked straight to the receptionist’s desk where a pretty lady with blurry glasses on was busy on her computer.

“Excuse me, Miss,” he addressed attracting her attention.

“Welcome sir,” she smiled broadly rising to her feet. “Welcome to Pinnacle Investment Incorporated. How may I help you?”

Ryan couldn’t help but smile back at her, with the way she welcomed him warmly showed she was really a smart lady.

“I’m here to see the CEO of this company,” he said calmly.

The lady scrutinized him from head to toe and her countenance shifted into a contemptuous one.

Pinnacle Investment was one of the most prestigious companies in the city. In all her years working at the front desk, only well-known figures with high social standing ever requested to meet the CEO

How could a man show up looking this shabby and expect to see the CEO?

“Do you have an appointment with him?” she asked, her eyes filled with suspicion.

“Not exactly,” Ryan replied, shaking his head. “But it’s important that I see him.”

Her expression turned cold. “You should leave, mister. The CEO doesn’t have time to waste on people like you,” she said, her voice dripping with disdain.

“What? No! I won’t leave until I’ve seen him,” Ryan retorted firmly.

The receptionist’s eyes narrowed, her face twisting with anger.

“Do you think I don’t know what people like you are up to? I’ve been at this front desk for over five years, and I’ve seen plenty of beggars just like you—pretending to be business affiliates, just to get close and ask the CEO for money.”

“You can’t deceive me. Leave from here before I call security to teach you some lesson before throwing you out,” the receptionist warned with a temper.

Ryan’s jaw dropped slightly, he stared at himself in shock. Though his cloths were worn and faded, there were neat. How could the receptionist be unkind to mistake him for a beggar?

“You’ve got it all wrong miss. I’m not here to beg money from anyone. Like I told you, I’m here to see the CEO of the company, and you should let me see him,” his voiced raised in frustration.

“A stubborn type, huh?” the receptionist frowned. “I’ll teach you a lesson you’ll never forget anytime you think about coming back here to beg money in the future!”

With an angered expression, she picked up the telephone receiver, pressed a few keys and placed it against her ear. “Security, I need you at the lobby!” she slammed the telephone back in its original place.
