"Hey, Granny Scarlet! How are you today?"
Katsuo said as he dropped the basket of fruits he had just gathered.
"It's... okay..."
Granny Scarlet answered Katsuo slowly as she usually did.
It had been more than three months since Katsuo set foot in this jungle and started his life in the wilderness. At first, it was hard, there was that grey blur that kept stealing his food, and then his arms kept getting scratched whenever he tried to climb a tree. Every night he would pray to Aeternitas, to help him, to guide him out of this jungle and show him the way towards civilization.
She never answered his prayers.
However, it was okay. He knew that she was a goddess and she couldn't return every prayer. He didn't blame her. He wanted to blame her but he couldn't as she had already granted him a second chance at life, how could he be hostile to her? But in gaming terms, he still felt salty about being thrown in here.
His first week was the worst, he was constantly hungry and didn't know where to go or what to do. It was at the end of the first week that he finally got an idea about how to survive. He just needed to ask.
Did that sound crazy?
Well, it was! Back then he literally went crazy from hunger. Water from the river was the only thing he could fill his stomach with. He had even started to chew on barks from hunger.
That was when he remembered a certain article he had read in the past.
It was an article about how mushrooms could speak to each other and they had developed their own language.
---
[Polyglot(Max)]: You can speak and understand every language in existence.
---
Once he remembered that he started to speak with trees. If they had a language to communicate with, Katsuo should be able to speak it. At first, they didn't answer him. Still, he kept whispering to them because that was the only thing he could do back then. At the back of his mind, he was hoping that the trees refused to speak to him because he ate their bark so he kept apologizing to them. He complimented their leaves and branches and eventually, one of the trees spoke to him.
Remembering that Katsuo couldn't help but chuckle.
When they first spoke to him, he had thought he finally went nuts completely but they had actually spoken to him! It wasn't his imagination. So he asked them how to leave the jungle but they couldn't answer him since they didn't know the way.
Still, they helped him by giving him fruits! He didn't need to be hungry anymore!
Afterwards, they pointed towards him Granny Scarlet, one of the rulers of this jungle.
She was a sentient tree and eventually, she had become a treant. Her name was Scarlet because her leaves were red all year round. According to Granny one of her friends suggested the name and she liked it.
After hearing the recommendations from other trees Granny Scarlet took him under her wing. She taught him how to survive in the forest, how to hunt, how to weave baskets, and how to make fire. She taught him everything Katsuo needed.
"Oh... it's here... again"
Katsuo immediately got up and picked up his spear.
It was the grey blur, the fish thief!
He didn't know what kind of an animal it was but it always aimed for Katsuo's food.
*Woosh*
"Nooo!!!"
Katsuo cried in despair as his hard-earned food for the day went missing again.
"Don't... be sad... it's also... a child... of this... jungle"
"I know granny, I know. But I swear when I can get strong enough I will catch it and give it a good smack in the bum. If it's that fast it doesn't need to steal my food now does it?"
Katsuo wore his empty basket behind his back.
He needed to talk to trees and beg for food... again.
Well, at least the other trees in the jungle knew of grey blur as well so they understood his predicament. Still, this should help his body train a little.
After finding food and a stable environment to live in Katsuo finally started training his martial arts. It had also turned into a skill after a week of training and that was when he confirmed his speculation that skills had levels.
---
[Martial Arts: Seiryuu Style Karate (Elementary lv.2)]: You have mastered the basics of your martial arts Strength +20 Agility +20 Vitality +20
---
It started off as basic and for every level, Katsuo would gain +1 to Strength, Agility and Vitality but after level 9 it upgraded to the Elementary stage and each level started to give +10 to the stats but it was way harder to level up in the Elementary stage.
But seeing this he was kinda disappointed. All three of his skills were at max level but they didn't grant him any stats. If they did his stats could have been in the thousands... or at least Katsuo assumed as such.
He also didn't know how many stages there were for his skill to upgrade. Most importantly if it would have another ten times jump in the amount of stats granted but at least it was better than nothing.
He didn't want to say it himself because it felt weird but he started to like this kind of lifestyle. He would get up every morning, train, forage for food, and take survival lessons from Granny Scarlet then rinse and repeat.
However, one question still bothered his mind. His starting stats were 1 so he could accept being unable to catch a sight of grey blur back then but now that his stats were in the 20s how could he still not see it? Just how absurd were its stats?
At times like this, he wished he had mana because then he would be able to use his appraisal skill to identify its stats and finally learn the difference. He was actually scared that grey blur had stats to rival the beast from back then. If so, he would never be able to get his revenge on it.
Still, he couldn't blame grey blur either. It was only making his life harder, despite its fast speed it never attempted to take his life. According to Granny Scarlet, she was just a prankster and liked messing with other creatures in the forest. It didn't hold any ill will against any being and that was why the jungle protected it.
'Grey blur is the child of everyone in this jungle'
That was what Granny said back then.
Those words made Katsuo think of the meaning behind them. Why was it the child of everyone? Because it didn't have any parents. Why did everyone tolerate it? Because it only wanted attention and this was the only way it knew how.
In a way, they were similar. Katsuo was also all alone in this world and he could also be considered a child of this jungle.
"So granny, how long till your friend comes?"
Katsuo asked before leaving even though he knew the answer.
"Three... months"
Granny Scarlet was a treant but she hated moving so she would generally stay planted like a normal tree. But she had druid friends who would come to visit her from time to time. That was why the beast spared him back then. It had thought Katsuo was related to them.
So despite the fact that she refused to move, Granny still offered him a way out. She told him how to get out of the jungle but Katsuo couldn't leave alone.
The way out actually passed through Relsai's territory (the black beast) and it had specifically said it would kill Katsuo if he ever set foot in its territory. So the only thing he could do right now was to wait for Granny's friends and go out with them. If he was lucky, he could even take one of them as his master.
"Okay, then granny. I am leaving now"
"See... you... later"
For a minute there Katsuo thought if he should actually hunt something for the night but he gave up the idea. Whenever he catches something it would be taken by the grey blur but if he foraged for food sometimes it would be merciful and let him keep it. There was also another more ethical question but Katsuo was intentionally ignoring it because his love of meat had transcended this ethical dilemma. It was whether eating talking animals could be considered as cannibalism or was it just restricted to eating humans rather than beings that could think and talk? Well he didn't even need to consider this ethical dilemma as whatever food he got would be stolen by grey blur anyway.
He was sick of fruits but he had no choice. If he wanted to eat meat, he needed to have a bigger fist than grey blur.
"Happy birthday to me!" Katsuo snuffed the makeshift candle on top of the big mango-like fruit he found. Today was his birthday. He was finally 17 years old. It had been five months since he had been thrown off into this world. He looked at himself. His hands were rough, covered in calluses. He was wearing clothes made off of fur from the animals he had hunted. His original clothes were in tatters and they had already been purposed into something else. His hair was rough and covered in dry leaves. He hadn't been able to bathe in a long time. The air was cold due to the weather. He didn't know if this world followed the same season cycle but it had been snowing for the last two months so there was only a month left till spring. His body was the one that went through the most transformation. He had lean but tough muscles, a characteristic of his lineage. His mother was the same. Even though she looked chubby, her strength was equal to his father's. If someone saw the current him,
*Splash* Katsuo was standing under a waterfall with weights tied to his appendages in a horse stance. He didn't know if this training method had an effect but he had seen it on Samurai Jack so it should definitely work... it will probably work... it had a possibility of working? He hated the cold water in this season, but today he decided to take on this challenge because it was a special day. Today was the day Granny Scarlet's friend was coming to visit her so he needed to look presentable. The snow around the forest was already melting so they were about to enter spring. Such an apt season for the beginning of his new life! "Done!" As soon as his training was done Katsuo escaped from the waterfall. *Brrrt* It was really cold despite the air getting warmer, the water was still cold. Katsuo threw down his makeshift weights and put on his fur clothes. He didn't really like them but this was the best he could craft with his given skills. His fur shirt looked more like a fur po
Unlike his expectations, Katsuo didn't hear from the elf that day. He had to go back to his campsite and sleep for the night. He hoped that she would make up his mind by tomorrow. The wait felt like a torture. Most importantly though, he was happy that he finally had a proper conversation with another human... I mean humanoid being after so long. The only things he could usually talk with were sentient trees. He wanted to get an animal companion at first but he felt weird speaking to his food. It was like having a conversation with your egg before breaking it for a sunny side up so he had given up that idea. Could he have made friends with animals that he wasn't going to eat? No. Because there wasn't a single animal that Katsuo didn't eat in this jungle. He had eaten everything from snakes to squirrels. He had even eaten wolf meat on one rare occasion before. This was important because there weren't a lot of animals that he could hunt in this forest. That was why his diet mostl
"Okay"After some thinking, Katsuo decided to accept her proposal. He had to because this was the arrangement of the goddess. He didn't know what her plans were but at least he knew that she didn't hold any ill will against him, but most importantly he wanted to have a family again. So what if his family in this world were not humans? He didn't mind."Then from now on your name is Kazama Um'rael"Aranel said as if it was a matter of course."No no no, you have a misunderstanding. In my world, we say the last name first so it should be Katsuo Um'rael""Is that so? Anyway, now that this matter is settled, let's get along well from now on son""Ugh, can't you just call me by my name?""No, you have to get used to it S-O-N"Seeing him bothered by her address Aranel teased him even further by emphasizing it."When do we start training in mana?""Look at this kid, trying to run before he could even walk. We first start by teaching babies how to speak elven but you should have that covered s
"...congratulations. You passed"Katsuo wanted to jump and scream in joy but he held himself back. Finally! After 7 months of gruelling, he had finally passed all the exams sensei had prepared for him. This meant that he should be able to start his mana training soon.During these 7 months, Aranel Sensei had taught him the common knowledge of this world, starting from the major countries to what happened in the past. Katsuo didn't think he had even studied this much for his high school exam."So sensei, we can finally start mana training, right?""Why are you asking the obvious? Of course not! Think of yourself as a baby, you only learnt how to speak. You can only be considered a toddler now. So what do you teach to a baby after how to speak?""How to walk?"Katsuo was finally used to Aranel Sensei's weird pace."Correct, then what do you think walking would be for you?""I guess it would be moving my body?"Katsuo took a second to ponder before answering the question."You are right,
"Woosh*Grey blur was running all around him again going whichever way it wanted.*Thud*It crashed against the invisible barrier again and fell to the ground. Looking at it struggling like that Katsuo felt heartbroken. It had been a month since his sensei had given him Grey Blur to take care of and there still weren't any improvements. Because it was such a wild animal Aranel Sensei had put a leash spell on it. It could only move around in a fifty-meter radius around Katsuo. The first mission sensei had given him was to learn her name. Katsuo thought it would be an easy mission since he and Grey Blur had a history and he didn't think it would be a problem, but as long as she had any energy Grey Blur would run all around him and try to escape her leash. She wouldn't even speak a word to him.He knew that she could understand him thanks to his skill [Polyglot] but she was refusing to even speak to him. She didn't even eat anything Katsuo had given her, instead, she would hunt when Ka
After that day Aria kept visiting Katsuo but she would run away the moment she sensed Aranel Sensei. Today was also one of those days. But today carried a deeper meaning for him. Today was the day he could finally start learning how to use mana! After his [Martial Arts: Seiryuu Style Karate] skill reached Elementary lv.9 it stopped growing. If he wanted to grow it any further he needed real combat experience, not just sparring. His sensei noticed this as well so she decided to finally teach him how to be a druid."Well then. Son, tell me how jobs are divided in this world."Aranel Sensei didn't forget to use this opportunity to test Katsuo's knowledge."Yes, Sensei! Jobs in this continent can be divided into three paths. The path of warrior, which focuses on how to use weapons and tempering the body. The path of rogue, which focuses on utility and dexterity. And lastly, the path of mage which focuses on casting spells and attuning to mana."Aranel Sensei nodded."You are correct. The
When Katsuo woke up it was already the next day. Finally! Finally, he could use mana!He was on his way to becoming the strongest man this world had ever seen!Well...Fine, maybe that was an exaggeration but thanks to his system he was at least sure that he could get into the top 10 without much trouble."It seems like you have finally woken up dearie."Aranel Sensei walked inside Katsuo's living quarters."Yes, Sensei!""Good. Now that you have set forth into the path of nature there is no turning back. I have told you about the ways of nature in the past. Now let's talk about the specifics of being a druid. You know that druids fall under the spellcaster category, then how do they get stronger?"Katsuo grumbled inside. He had just woken up and didn't even have a chance to check his stats yet but Aranel Sensei was already having another class. "Uhm, warriors get stronger by creating an aura core in their body and converting the mana they have intaken to aura. Rogues get stronger b
By the time Katsuo had returned it was already evening. Sven and Gail still had not arrived so he decided to wait. He was not a detective, the play he put on in front of the Fatty was already the limit of his abilities. So his only job now was just to wait and learn where the girl was being held and then beat up some kidnappers. Speaking of which Fatty truly surprised Katsuo. He had already thrown out the idea that he was the kidnapper because of his demeanour and actions. In fact, he didn't even think he was a bad guy at all. Why though? He was not an easily trusting person... at least he thought so. Did that mean Fatty messed up with his brain in some way? That was impossible. If there was even a hint of magic involved he would have sensed it. Maybe there was something in the whiskey? No way, he had cast [Detoxcification] on it so that was not possible either. Maybe he used some psychological tricks on him, after all, he was a politician. That last one was a little probable but at
Katsuo gave it a thought and agreed to help Roy with finding his kidnapped sister. According to him aside from the mayor, there was no one else they had any enmity with so that was Katsuo's first clue, Gail said she could ask around about her to her old contacts and Sven decided to do his own thing. When asked what he meant by that Sven said just leave it to him and brushed him off. He had never questioned before maybe Sven also had some connections with gangs here but that was impossible as he was from Horwaard. However, when Katsuo thought about where to ask about the mayor he noticed a crucial problem in his plans. He didn't know anyone in Dawn. His sister and Kalrune had already returned to their countries. He wasn't some gruff noir detective who could understand how everything went down by piecing together some rumour either. So Katsuo thought about his own advantages. For one, he was a transmigrator with a lot of popular culture knowledge when it came to isekai genre. So he as
After his party members returned Katsuo started to talk with the boy to learn about his situation."So you said your sister was kidnapped?" He asked the boy cautiously. From his get up he looked like a beggar but his face was well defined despite the bruises so there was a high chance that his sister was a beauty as well. That would explain why his sister was kidnapped but Katsuo had no intention of getting ahead of himself. It was better to hear the situation first-hand from the concerned party."Yes, today she was kidnapped by a bunch of ruffians. I don't even know who they are and why they targeted us. Please help! I am begging you. If the money is not enough I can find more."The boy started to speak in haste. He was really panicked but what he said was of no help at all."I wanted to ask about that. This money is too much for a beggar like you. Where did you get it?" Gail asked as she grabbed the pouch and checked its contents. "No, that is money left from my grandfather's inher
As expected, Denstria accepted the terms of the deal and Kalrune left for Oedl soon after, leaving Katsuo and Sven to embark on their long-awaited adventurer life finally. "How could you forget about me *Sob*," said Gail while grabbing Katsuo's fur coat and sobbing. "No no, how could we forget about you? If we did such a thing what kind of a person would we be? We just had something important going on so we couldn't come to pick you up. Right, Sven?" Katsuo lied as naturally as he breathed. Aria peeked under Katsuo's shirt and wrinkled her nose. "Ugh, stinky. Playmate who is this? She smells awful" Aria said as she covered her nose with her tiny little paws. Hearing that Gail got self-conscious and smelled her armpits but she couldn't smell anything. She as a budding young lady was very disturbed by such accusations. "I don't smell" Gail grumbled and pulled down her hood even further to mask her face. You know, just in case. "Of course, you don't, that was just Aria being...
"Uhm, are you sure about this?" Katsuo couldn't hold back his curiosity and asked after leaving the meeting. "About what? Saving hundreds of thousands of lives?" "But just like that fatty said isn't the Greywulf estate your ancestral home?" This was the part that eluded Katsuo. He was from a lineage of martial artists and their family held onto their traditions for centuries. So selling their ancestral home was something he couldn't imagine. That was why he wanted to ask Kalrune how he did it. "Home is where you make it. Also, I wasn't joking when I said Greywulf estate is its people and not the land. My father would also agree with me. After all, he was the one who taught me this. Being a noble means 'being responsible for your subjects'." As Kalrune spoke about his father his face brightened up. Katsuo could see that Kalrune treasured him greatly so this made him curious about the strongest man on the continent Brevok Greywulf. Just what kind of person was he? A cold Duke of the
"My supervisor accepted selling Greywulf estate to you," said Kalrune as everyone in the meeting looked at him in shock."Come again?" asked the fat mayor of Dawn while wiping his forehead with a handkerchief. "You heard me right. Kingdom of Oedl decided to 'sell' Greywulf estate to Denstria" Kalrune repeated himself."Of course, since you have a legitimate casus belli this land belongs to Denstria so we will withdraw but as we were the ones that were taking care of it for so long you guys need to pay us for our services. After all, if it were not for the 'current' Greywulf house the land would already have been ravaged by the monsters long ago. So it is only right that you guys pay us."The glasses guy from Denstria frowned while pondering. This was out of his considerations for how the meeting would go. He didn't know who came up with this ingenious idea but they surely got him. He even suspected that there might be a spy amidst their ranks otherwise it would be impossible to come
Kalrune was pacing around in his room thinking about how to stop this impending war. This time Denstria was coming at them for real without any intention of stopping with measly threats. Otherwise, they wouldn't have pulled out the trump card they had been hiding for centuries. The question was why now? There were times in Oedl's history when they were way weaker than they were now. In other words, this plan was something in the making for a long time.At first, Kalrune had thought this was going to be another small skirmish to cull the forces of Greywulf Duchy as after Archmage Karrion's death his father became the undisputed strongest man in the world so of course this reputation had its pros but that was about it.Now Denstria was aiming for swelling Greywulf whole... but why?Even as a person who was born and raised in Greywulf estate Kalrune couldn't see any point to this.Sure it was acting as a shield against Denstria but even if they took down the Greywulf estate they would ju
Katsuo unwillingly hugged his sister Tharnel. Truth be told he didn't know how to treat this sister of his. If he said they were close that would be a lie, but if he said they didn't get along that would be one as well. Their relationship was complicated. "Woah, I missed you, little brother! You have grown bigger since I last saw you. But you seem a little thin. Are you eating okay? Don't tell me you get so wrapped in your training and forget to feed yourself. Didn't I tell you to take better care of yourself?" Tharnel started nagging Katsuo as she gave him a firm hug. Well, the distance between them was only awkward for Katsuo. For Tharnel, he was her one and only little brother. "Ugh, no. It's just that my muscles have become more compact so I look thinner... you also know that Sensei would never let me skip a meal right?" Katsuo mumbled as he pulled away from her hug. "You still call mom Sensei?" "It's... just... I don't know it's complicated okay?" "Why though? She only sa
Katsuo nervously walked behind the elven strider. He tried to read his status window but as usual, the damn thing didn't work when he needed it to work. As they walked forward Katsuo remembered what he had learnt about striders. They were a subclass of warrior profession but they had extremely harsh requirements so usually only elves could become one, which made sense considering elves were the ones who created the profession. The speciality of striders was their endless regeneration. He wasn't sure about its authenticity but he had heard once heard from Aranel that even if you decapitate them master rank striders could grab their heads and reattach them and keep fighting like nothing happened.Of course, their fighting style also was one that favoured mutual destruction. They didn't care if their arms were chopped as long as they could leave one wound in their enemy. In this way, they sounded like berserkers but unlike those glass cannons, these guys were anti-aircraft cannons.
