Lucas's pov
‘‘Ding!’’ The oven chimed into the silence, startling me shortly as I rushed to turn it off. I brought out the steaming hot strawberry cake and left it in a tray to cool up.
“Lucas!!’’ It finally came, Lady Wright's yell that I'd been expecting. I stepped out to catch her gaze from the dining area where they were all seated, awaiting desserts.
From Lady Wright, my mother-in-law, to Ava, my wife and the only reason I'm in the Wright mansion, on to Daisy, their daughter-in-law whose father owned a famous corporation. She lived here with her husband, Romeo who runs the family business. And lastly is Ava's cousin, Natasha.
‘‘How much longer will desserts take, isn't there a single thing you can do right?’’ Lady Wright spiked.
‘‘I'm sorry, I'll serve it now.’’
“Please tell me you'll wash those filthy hands before touching anything,” Daisy called out, referring to the cleaning towel in my hands.
‘‘Oh c'mon, he should know better than that.’’ Natasha scoffed.
“You can't be so sure, they probably use rags for a dish mat where he came from.’’ Daisy cursed and I swallowed.
“Dessert will be out in a minute.’’ I ignored their mean gestures as I stepped back into the kitchen.
It didn’t really faze me, the privilege to reside in this opulent mansion without having to fend for my expenses outweighed anything.
Compared to the struggles of my past, scrapping with my menial jobs, this is a welcome respite. The benefits make the occasional humiliation worthwhile. I get to work a few menial jobs now and comfortably save up to manage the bills for my mother's heart problems. It was all that really mattered to me.
I divided the desserts into four servings and took them out to them, but Ava’s voice made me halt by the door as she nagged Lady Wright.
“I want that outfit for the party, you know it's been a while since I changed my wardrobe.’’
‘‘Then do it, you have a husband. He should get you the dress as well.’’ Lady Wright replied, and all eyes darted to me. It was no use remaining on my spot anymore so I advanced to serve them.
‘‘You know he cannot afford fifty-two thousand five hundred dollars.’’ It felt heavy on Ava's lips as she mumbled out.
I always felt sorry that I couldn't meet up to her standards. It wasn't her fault that Lord Wright made us get married, neither was it mine either but I should at least be able to satisfy my wife. The fact that I didn't even have one outfit for the same party Romeo was hosting. Well, not like I ever attend any parties with them.
“Why are you still married to him then, he's obviously a gold-digger who can't even afford a dagger,” Natasha swore, not minding my presence, and her words cut through my heart.
They didn’t agree that Lord Wright had simply taken a liking to me and married me to his granddaughter. It was no different from my feelings when Lord Wright spelt it to my face that afternoon that he wanted me to marry Ava.
“You know it was grandfather's greatest wish.’’ Ava expressed the only reason she was still with me and it was the truth, we didn't love each other.
I loved her in the beginning but she has never felt the same way. How could she, I couldn't even express my love for her. She's a skinny tall brunette with naturally moisturized curly locks. She doesn't join them in criticizing me but I believe it's only because she was the one tied to me.
‘‘And where's grandfather now?’’ Daisy asked a sarcastic question which everyone knew the answer to.
“Can you all stop this? I'm the one attached to this mess but you guys keep making it even worse to manage.’’ Ava recounted.
Not like it doesn't get to me. Their criticism stings, but I've been through worse that taught me to tune it out. My life has been a sphere of adversities where every fortunate situation is either ephemeral or binded with inauspiciousness.
My father disappeared shortly after my birth, leaving my mother to shoulder the burden alone. I witnessed her tireless struggles to provide for me those three years I spent with her, it's why the agony of losing her to cancer still lingers in my heart. I got adopted by an average couple, and life gained back some of its taste but only for a few years, my foster dad, Mr Williams, died in a car accident and my foster mom was diagnosed with heart problems when she couldn't stop mourning her husband.
I've worked as a waiter, a server, a delivery guy, and every other menial/part-time job mentionable. It was in my course as a delivery guy I encountered Lord Wright who passed on just eight months after my marriage with Ava.
“What do you have to say about this, Mr gold-digger? Aren't you going to save your wife of the shame?’’ Daisy said as I dropped her serving of dessert, and my mind drifted to the fifty-five thousand dollars under my bed. I contemplated badly on giving it to Ava or depositing it at the hospital.
For the past ten days, I've juggled multiple jobs to scrape that amount. My mother's heart condition recently worsened to a severe heart disease that requires surgery – a staggering six million dollars which I've been saving up for.
“I mean don't you even have a bit of shame? How can you be so greedy! You clearly saw that we're not your class yet you agreed to the marriage, what were you expecting?’’ Natasha taunted me.
“I blame Ava for accepting a duck like him.’’ Lady Wright chimed.
“What could I have done?’’ Ava yelled.
“You've been working these days and getting paid, are you also stingy to give out?’’ Daisy asked me, but Lady Wright beat me to it.
‘‘Well your wife needs something, you have to provide it for her and you will.’’
“He's saving up for his sick mother,’’ Ava muttered.
“I see you don't want a new dress. There's a whole collection in your wardrobe anyway.’’ Lady Wright dropped her fork loudly to leave.
“I’ll pay for it.’’ I swallowed hard. Since my mother's condition is not at a critical stage, I could give the money to Ava and save up again.
‘‘So where's the money?’’ Daisy asked.
I left to get the required amount and handed the cash to Ava who wasn't enthusiastic about it. She counted it and confirmed the amount.
“You had the money all this while and pocketed it?’’ Natasha scoffed in disbelief.
“He's not only wretched but also stingy, a perfect definition of a gold digger!’’ Lady Wright spat before walking away.
I wished I could disappear, but my cell phone saved me when it rang from a distance. I excused myself to take the call and my heart shrank when I noticed it was the hospital line calling.

Lucas's povI burst into the ward, and the scene before me weakened my knees. Some nurses were hastily disconnecting my mother's life-support systems, while Dr. Collins turned to face me with a glaring scowl. “Thank goodness you're here. I was going to dump her outside if you didn't show up soon.’’ He conceded in a mean voice. “Wh..what's going on?’’ My voice trembled. ‘‘Isn't it obvious?’’ He sneered. “We can't accommodate your mother anymore, take her away, elsewhere. It's none of my business.’’ He stormed out of the room, leaving me shaken. The nurses watched me with disdain, but I ignored them and rushed to my mother's bedside. Her weary eyes brimmed with tears, she could barely manage a gesture. “Mom, are you okay?’’ I fought hard to hold back my tears, my heart tearing apart. “You can just take me home.’’ She whispered weakly, but that was impossible. She's totally incompetent and needs hospitalization. ‘‘Don't worry, I'll fix it,’’ I reassured her. “Sir, please take h

Lucas's pov Ever since I got adopted by my foster parents, Mr and Mrs Williams, two years after I lost my biological mom, my surname has been changed from Reid to Williams. It's been what? Twenty-seven years already! I doubt that people who knew me by my biological father's surname would still recognise me if we crossed paths, he didn't even spend up to a year of my life with me.Different questions roamed my mind with no answers. Mr Caleb had driven us in his car to a bigger hospital, actually one of the biggest in Virginia. He offered to pay the surgery bills without a refund and it made me wanna go crazy!I was confused, I was anxious. Just who was he?‘‘Ah, there you are!’’ His sharp masculine voice made me look up. I stood hastily as he approached.‘‘Everything will be fine now; she's been taken into the ward.’’ He reassured me with a warm smile.‘‘Who are you?’’ I spewed the only words that hovered my mind. ‘‘How about we save the explanation for today and talk tomorrow instea

Lucas's povI stared, eyes wide with wonder as Caleb opened the briefcase, emotions brimming in his own eyes. He had probably tried opening the briefcase all these years so it seemed like a dream too. He gently extracted files from the case, and crisp bundles of dollar notes revealed beneath, widening my gaze further as shock coursed through my veins. Caleb closed the briefcase sharply, scanning the surroundings briefly before facing me. “These are the main documents to be signed, but you still need to sign that one to affirm your identity.’’ He nodded his chin towards the first file in front of me.I swallowed hard as I signed, my throat constricting as sweat drenched my shirt. The air suddenly became too hot as Caleb explained the various purposes of each document while I signed. My mind actually still hovered, fixated on the content left in the briefcase, was all that money also supposed to be mine?“Finally, there's this device.’’ Caleb said, picking out a gadget with a thumbp

Lucas's povLady Wright's piercing voice echoed through the air as she halted before us, her gaze still fixed on me.“What did he do this time?’’‘‘Good day, Ma'am. I'm Barnabas from Folicks firm, a loan company.’’ Barnabas introduced himself. ‘‘Loan sharks?’’ Lady Wright cut in sharply, and Barnabas responded with a subtle ‘hmph’.‘‘What do you have to say, Mr debtor?’’ Lady Wright directed at me. She had her eyes on me the whole time, waiting for a course to humiliate me. I summoned the courage to meet her gaze. “I asked him to come for it tomorrow.” A menacing smirk crawled onto her lips. ‘‘Where did you plan on getting it, my purse?’’ Gasps erupted from the surrounding crowd at her outburst, some had even begun capturing the scene on their phones. “I don't think I've ever stolen from you.’’ I replied firmly. Mrs Royce stepped forward, her eyes ravishing my body with a lustful smile. ‘‘How about me then, should I reveal our little secrets?’’I swallowed hard. Since the firs

Lucas's pov The gigantic mansion was flooded with lights. Twinkling blue, green, and red lights alongside the normal yellow bulb. From the gate, the thumping beats from the party were heavier, and the air literally shook. I paid the cab man as I alighted, bracing myself for whatever was to come as I headed in. Various epicurean cars which displayed their high worth merely by the sight of them lined down the compound. I wondered what time the party was scheduled to commence for this number of people to have arrived. I proceeded into the house, and I appreciated the loneliness that embraced me. The party was happening at the third floor which holds a large hall for such purposes. I retired to my room to freshen up and change into something more presentable for the party. I drew in a deep breath and almost pulled the door, but someone else did it before me. My heart sank subconsciously. Ava showed up by the door, sizing me up with her eyes before speaking. Probably after she was sat

Lucas's pov I dried my hands in a napkin after finally finishing up with the heap of dirty dishes from the party last night. I proceeded to serve the kimchi rice and sauce which was now warm enough to eat. The Wright family was already completely settled on the dining table. While Natasha was busy on her phone, Lady Wright and Ava were engrossed in a little chat with Romeo. Daisy just watched with less interest. I served their portions and filled their glasses with juice when my phone chimed against my pocket. I unlocked the message once I returned to the kitchen, and my heart skipped a beat when I saw Caleb's name in the content. I took off my cooking apron and hurried upstairs to call him. ‘‘Hello, Mr Lucas.’’ Caleb's voice came through. The first thing that came off my lips were complaints. “Why didn't you call me yesterday?’’ “Uh..I didn't see any need to. Is there a problem?” Caleb stuttered. ‘‘So why did you send a message now?’’ I asked, remembering the message content t

Lucas's pov Caleb adjusted uncomfortably on his seat, clearing his throat in a composed manner. “May I get your reasons, sir?’’ He requested rather carefully. I scoffed. “That idiot doesn't deserve his monthly paycheck, he's a jerk. I'm pretty sure there are others just like him, but I'll make him my scapegoat since he fell into my trap first.’’ “It's alright. He'll receive the dismiss letter by tomorrow.’’ Caleb stated, and I couldn't help the leap in my heart. Commanding authority was really great, you get whatever you want just at the mention of it. Pride sat on my shoulders like brazen armor as I read through the rest of the names. “I'll keep this,’’ I said. “Yes, you should! There's one more thing before we call it a day, I have just thirty minutes to get to a meeting.’’ Caleb informed me, staring into his wristwatch. “It's the black card.’’ He said, handing me something more like a purse. ‘‘What card?’’ I asked puzzledly. ‘‘Check it out. Lucas's povI scoffed underneath my breath at Lady Wright's charge. Why are they making a big deal out of it anyway, if they need a slave they should hire one! “I had to see someone. I informed Ava before leaving. And I apologize for leaving the way I did.’’ My voice came out unusually hard, I was doing a lot trying to contain their ruckus.‘‘Who was it?’’ Lady Wright demanded. “Who cares about who he went to meet? I don't think there's any justification for what he did.’’ Daisy argued, and I found myself nodding. Lady Wright released a scoff, turning to Daisy. “You won't believe this! The day at the hospital, wasn't that yesterday?’’ She asked no one in particular, but Natasha was fast to confirm it. Lady Wright continued. “I was just in a chat with Mr Sikes about an hour ago, and guess what happened?’’Things were getting complicated at this point. The three women looked utterly puzzled, trying to get Lady Wright's point. Lady Wright searched through her phone, and it dawned o

Chapter 39: Take Me To Your Workplace
Lady Wright POV I had waited until the next morning to give my reaction. Last night right after Ava had led her husband back to her room, I had left the living room to my room. If I had stayed a second later ,I would have razed the mansions to the ground with my rage. Nothing and no one could have contained me. How dare Lucas suddenly feel like he could talk back to me?! Not only that he had the audacity to claim that I owed him my thanks. Something about the way he said it spelled that it might be true. That was too much confidence to be just a fluke. What if he wasn't kidding? That was the question that had troubled me all night long. I had barely been able to catch some sleep. Now that Ava was involved, there was nothing I could say. I had to wait until he was finally free from her grasp. My opportunity to get my pound of flesh came the next morning. I was up early, my purpose was to catch Lucas before he sneaked off to work. I was pacing the living room as I waited for him
Chapter 38: Drunk Boasting
Lucas POV What a day! After the stress I had been put through, I wanted to stay in my new house and get a good rest. But I returned back to the Wright family in the evening. Everything was going well for me courtesy of Ava. It didn't matter when I got back home, I knew I would no more go back to a pile of tasks waiting for me like it used to be. Ava and I were also getting close by the day. If I didn't show up at home, she was going to start asking questions. I had managed to say on her good side. I didn't want her rude self to return. I had a couple of drinks with Caleb before I returned home. I was a little tipsy but I was organized. I didn't mumble or stagger no matter how intoxicated I was. I was feeling a little dizzy and I couldn't trust myself to put words together without fumbling my speech. Take it from me, after the drinks, it was not easy to pull myself together as I headed back home. “Are you sure I should drop you off here?” The cab driver asked. Usually he would
Chapter 37: Natasha Encounter
Lucas POV My first instinct was to run back into one of the aisles and hide. If I hadn't put on a cap that would have been my first point of action. But I stood my ground. She already looked suspicious. If I did anything shady now that her eyes were pinned on me, it would only confirm what she was already thinking. “Sir, is the woman coming to us the reason for your restlessness?” “Yes, Caleb,” I answered plainly, adjusting the cap on my head to cover some portion of my face as I turned to face Caleb. “If you give the order sir. I can go over and stop her from finding here.” “There's bi need for that Caleb. In fact, whatever happens I want you to stay out of it except it's you shedding coming to see.” “Okay sir.” I kept my head leaned towards Caleb talking about something completely unrelated when I heard her voice. “Excuse me,” she said, her voice clipped but carrying a practiced politeness that didn’t fool me for a second. “Do I know you?” I had expected my name to be the
Chapter 36: Contracts Progress
Lucas POV Caleb was the one who was taking charge of monitoring the projects. He made sure I wasn't just signing out projects without getting any improvement like it had been in previous times. I trusted him. He was dependable, no-nonsense, and always got the job done.As we approached 8th Avenue, the first glimpse of the project came into view. Massive steel beams rose against the skyline, the skeletal frame of a towering complex that would soon house dozens of businesses. Workers in hard hats moved like ants, cranes loomed overhead, and the hum of machinery filled the air.“Not bad,” I said.“Not bad?” Caleb snorted softly, though he quickly caught himself. “I mean, glad you think so, sir.”I laughed, a deep, rumbling sound. “Relax, Caleb. Credit where it’s due; this is impressive.”We parked near the site, stepping out onto the gravel lot. The ground was uneven, a mix of dirt and crushed stone that crunched under my boots. A foreman hurried over, clipboard in hand, his face light
Chapter 35: Increased Pay
Lucas POV Throughout the day, there were rumours flying around the office about an important looking man. Turns out that Stella had told her friend the story and soon enough everyone in the office was talking about it. Thank heavens I had on a hat. If she recognised me then it would have been a matter of time that my face would be touring the office. As soon as Jeremy reported for work I called him into office. He arrived quickly, clipboard in hand, a slight sheen of sweat on his brow. He looked overworked and from what I was beginning to uncover, probably underpaid too. After asking him to send a delegation to the hospital where Stella's father was admitted, I sat him down for a discussion. I leaned back in my chair, fixing him with a sharp look. “Yes. We need to have a serious discussion about how this office is running.” He froze for a moment, clearly caught off guard. “Of course, sir. What about, specifically?” I turned my monitor so he could see the spreadsheet I’d been
Chapter 34: Good Samaritan
Lucas POV I made my way to my company. No one had arrived yet so I didn't rush. I strolled into the office without having to keep my eyes over my shoulder at all times. It was nice to walk without feeling so scared of anyone. I was about to make it past the group of cubicles when I heard quiet sobbing. It came from one of the cubicles and I stopped to have a look. When I leaned in to steal a glance I caught sight of a troubled woman. She was hunched over her desk trying unsuccessfully to muffle her tears. I took a glance around her desk. The empty box of pizza and the upturned cups of coffee told me that she had probably been up all night. Documents are scattered on her desk but they were pushed away from Where her head lay. I could have continued my walk to the office but this woman grabbed my curiosity. I wanted to know what was wrong with her. I did the only thing I could think of to grab her attention. I tapped my fingers on the desk beside me. Her head shut up from where it
Chapter 33: Ava's Question
Lucas POV “Thank you for putting all this together,” I said, setting down the glass of wine that I had just gulped down. I had been careful to take a little of everything to avoid getting intoxicated. “It was the little I could do to show how happy I was to see how you've progressed. I wish there was more I could do to prove how supportive I am.” “You've done more than enough. You've beat my wildest dreams.” “I could say the same. I'm proud of you.” She paused. A long sigh escaped her lips. She placed both hands on the table supporting her chin as she leaned in. “So what do you do?” She asked in a short inquisitive tone. I saw this bombshell coming from a mile away. Last time, my legs were blown out from below me. This time, I brought shin pads to the field. I sighed. “I don't think I should answer that question. It might ruin this lovely evening that we are having.” Her eyelids lifted in suspicion. “No, Lucas. I just wanted to know the kind of job my husband does.” My hesita
Chapter 32: Celebration Dinner
Lucas POV ”What do you mean by we are being followed?” I asked just to be sure I wasn't panicking for the wrong reason. “One of my men had seen a suspicious man staring at us in the restaurant. He just confirmed that he saw the same man in a car following us a while ago.” Now I was panicking. Who could possibly want to track me down? For what reasons would anyone be following me? I still hadn't announced my newly acquired wealth so who would think to try and kidnap me?“Are we in danger?” I asked. “There's no need to panic. We are going to get the man. One of the patrol cars spotted him driving this way. He sped off before we could get a chance to ask him questions.” This must be the dangerous side of this life. But I wasn't going to back out just because things were starting to get uncomfortable. “I need to find out who that was and whoever sent him. I need men on it as soon as possible. And by that, I mean right now.” Caleb looked at me with a proud face. He must not have ex
Chapter 31: Is Lucas A Spy?
Lady Wright I paced around the room. There was no one at home so I didn't have to worry about anyone asking me questions about why I was so rattled. I wouldn't tell them anyway. But I'm going to tell you. It's because I was about to receive a call from Fletcher. Hours had passed and he still hadn't gotten back to me. The last time we spoke was this morning. He dropped me a text telling me how much it was going to take to track down Lucas. I was awaiting confirmation that he had eyes on Lucas before I sent him his fee. But that confirmation was taking longer than I had hoped. My legs suddenly grew tired from all the pacing about. I immediately sat down and crossed my legs together. That was when a call entered my phone. I jumped up grabbing the phone from the center table. I knocked over a glass of water but I didn't care. I answered the call and scolded Fletcher in one breath. “You better have good news for me or you have a good excuse.” “This is a lot harder than I think. I d
