Lucas POV

I had plans brimming through my head. Plans of revenge, strategies to pay back the Wright family for all they did to me.

I had been waiting for them to hit rock bottom. I knew they would get there, it was only a matter of time.

“As you requested, we have put out news of the contracts. A lot of top companies are going to show up tomorrow for the interviews.”

I knew that was not all he wanted to say.

“Usually, this kind of thing is usually done by mail. If you don't mind me asking, why are you requesting that the companies send top representatives to show their faces at the meeting? Had I not talked you out of it earlier, you were about to make the CEOs apply in person.”

“Because I want to be assured that whoever I decide to dish the contract out is trustworthy enough to handle it. I don't want a situation where contracts are being awarded, but there are issues with work getting done. Abandoned buildings cost us money, you know.”

Caleb nodded. It was unclear if he was f

Lucas POV It was the day for the interviews. As early as 6 am, the house was already as busy as a bee with all the buzz coming from the living room. “Mother, I have already gone over this presentation a thousand times. I don't see any need to recite it again!” Romeo complained. I could only imagine the pressure on his shoulders. He could be the reason joy returned to their lives or he could be the reason that their lives tumble downhill. Lady Wright wanted all the odds to be in her favor. The first outcome wasn't in the books for her. “I don't care if you want to recite it all the way to the elevator. I want to make sure you get every word and sentence correct. I am not going to let you walk in there and ruin the last chance of the family.” “She is right,” Natasha said. “You have to keep going over your lines until you get there. You can not mess this up like you did last time, okay? The fate of everyone depends on you!” I looked over at Natasha. How pompous of her to speak whe

Lucas POV The company was bustling as always. The conference room was prepared and the guests were waiting in there. I arrived at the company about half an hour late for the stipulated time for the interviews. Blame it on the traffic and the fact that my cab had to take a much longer route because I thought a car was following us. I couldn't be too careful. The guests were weary but none of them complained. Every groan they had was swallowed. After I came, it was a privilege for them to be here. I slipped in through the back door of the building as usual and as soon as I got to the company, I ordered the interviews to begin. Caleb had been thoughtful enough to order me breakfast and it was waiting for me as soon as I got there. In the office, there were monitors set up to display feed from the cameras in the conference room. The cameras covered every angle of the room, so I could see their faces as well as the expressions of everyone. Most of them were nervous. Having the whole

Lucas POV That struck a chord. Romeo stood gobsmacked He must have been wondering what he did wrong. He had barely been given a chance to defend himself and he must have felt like Jeremy had already written him off. He has not been given the right environment; he has been yelled at; he has been denied comfort and treated like he was someone not worth considering, unlike the others before him. “But sir, you haven't even had a look at the documents?” He said. There was no pride in his timer. Just pure shock and disappointment. There was also a dash of appeal for sympathy. “What documents?” Romeo pointed at the bin where the spiral-bound heap of papers he had spent a fortnight putting together. Mr Jeremy scoffed. “Do you know how many proposals this company received from the Wright Corporation in the past year? I know all about your strategy and every plan you have to present. Year in and year out, you Keep trying to sell outdated ideas which can't fit with the current m

Lucas POV I instructed the cab to stop me a couple of meters from the house. I wanted to be cautious. I wouldn't be surprised if I came back home to a full house and they were all waiting for me. I walked calmly into the compound. The cars in the parking lot told me that everyone had returned home. One of the car doors opened up and I immediately took cover in a nearby wall to shield myself from view. Someone stepped out and began rushing to the house. It was Lady Wright and she took brisk steps. Natasha climbed out of the other side of the door. “Aunty, calm down, please, before you do anything drastic,” she pleaded, trying to catch up with the older woman. The only problem was that she was in stilettos and could barely make her way across the yard without wobbling. Her words ignited the already burning flame in Lady Wright. She turned sharply to the younger woman. “You think I am overreacting right now? Weren't you here when I scold

Lucas POV Romeo called out to the maid who had opened the door. “Is Lucas in this house?” She looked around as if I was supposed to be seated in the living room at that instant. “No, sir. I haven't seen him since this morning. The last time I had seen him was when he was cleaning the dining room.” Truly she hadn't seen me. No one had seen me, I had been careful. “Go to Lucas's room and check if he is around.” I knew better than to reply immediately to Romeo's call. The way I see it I had two choices. Either I go out right now, or I go out through the back and attempt to fool them into thinking that I have just returned home. Both options had their bad sides, though. It would be worse if they thought that I had been indoors since and hadn't bothered to come open the door for them or welcome them back. It would aggravate them even more if I knocked on the f

Lady Wright POV Annoyed, raging, willing to skin someone alive. That was all the emotions I was feeling and more. This morning, I had been so certain that by evening, I would have signed at least two contracts with Blue Diamond. Mr Sikes has assured me that despite him having been fired he still had ties with people at the company. I had sent him some money and was pleased that he spoke with his connections back at the company. After sending a whooping hundred thousand dollars as he requested, he finally agreed to put in a good name for me. He even assured me that he had spoken with the interviewer. Being that I already had an existing contract, they would give me more priority than the others. For those of you wondering where my confidence was coming from, there you have it. He spoke so confidently that I bought his tales effortlessly. That's why I had put three times my effort into preparing Romeo. All he had to do was walk into that office and i

Lucas POV “What the hell do you mean by what is going on here? Were you not the one I asked to call your husband to drive us?” Finally, Lady Wright spoke her mind. Instead of yelling at me like everyone else, she went at Ava as soon as the latter walked down the room. “Easy, Mother. It isn't my fault that he decides to chase after his personal gains instead of helping us get there early.” ”Have you come to your senses now, Ava? Have you seen what I have been trying to tell you all these years? Are you finally ready to let go of this man before he ruins us?” Ava sighed. I'm sure this wasn't what she had hoped to come back to after a long day at work. “What did the interviewer say?” She asked. She couldn't have known. I had ordered Jeremy to assign her so much work so she would be busy. Otherwise, she would have time to think of trying to implicate herself for her family. “He yelled at me for not coming early to the interview. If only your t

Lucas PovI hesitated with the phone. My hand dug into my pocket but it refused to come back out. Mind you I didn't have any woman I was hiding from them. I had barely survived the drama from one woman. I wasn't going to subdue myself voluntarily into the arms of another. “Pull it out already,” Lady Wright yelled. What have I gotten myself into? I would willingly hand over the phone but that would only complicate matters for me. I know I had told you that I wasn't speaking with any female. Well technically I have been speaking with another female in my contacts. It was Caleb. I had him saved in my phone as Amanda. It was the only way I could think of operating stealthily without anyone listening to my calls or knowing who and when to call. Over the last couple of days, I had her too busy to clear our calls or chat history. But I was in front of my in-laws. I had just denied having any relations with another female and I couldn't explain why

Lady Wright POV I had waited until the next morning to give my reaction. Last night right after Ava had led her husband back to her room, I had left the living room to my room. If I had stayed a second later ,I would have razed the mansions to the ground with my rage. Nothing and no one could have contained me. How dare Lucas suddenly feel like he could talk back to me?! Not only that he had the audacity to claim that I owed him my thanks. Something about the way he said it spelled that it might be true. That was too much confidence to be just a fluke. What if he wasn't kidding? That was the question that had troubled me all night long. I had barely been able to catch some sleep. Now that Ava was involved, there was nothing I could say. I had to wait until he was finally free from her grasp. My opportunity to get my pound of flesh came the next morning. I was up early, my purpose was to catch Lucas before he sneaked off to work. I was pacing the living room as I waited for him

Lucas POV What a day! After the stress I had been put through, I wanted to stay in my new house and get a good rest. But I returned back to the Wright family in the evening. Everything was going well for me courtesy of Ava. It didn't matter when I got back home, I knew I would no more go back to a pile of tasks waiting for me like it used to be. Ava and I were also getting close by the day. If I didn't show up at home, she was going to start asking questions. I had managed to say on her good side. I didn't want her rude self to return. I had a couple of drinks with Caleb before I returned home. I was a little tipsy but I was organized. I didn't mumble or stagger no matter how intoxicated I was. I was feeling a little dizzy and I couldn't trust myself to put words together without fumbling my speech. Take it from me, after the drinks, it was not easy to pull myself together as I headed back home. “Are you sure I should drop you off here?” The cab driver asked. Usually he would

Lucas POV My first instinct was to run back into one of the aisles and hide. If I hadn't put on a cap that would have been my first point of action. But I stood my ground. She already looked suspicious. If I did anything shady now that her eyes were pinned on me, it would only confirm what she was already thinking. “Sir, is the woman coming to us the reason for your restlessness?” “Yes, Caleb,” I answered plainly, adjusting the cap on my head to cover some portion of my face as I turned to face Caleb. “If you give the order sir. I can go over and stop her from finding here.” “There's bi need for that Caleb. In fact, whatever happens I want you to stay out of it except it's you shedding coming to see.” “Okay sir.” I kept my head leaned towards Caleb talking about something completely unrelated when I heard her voice. “Excuse me,” she said, her voice clipped but carrying a practiced politeness that didn’t fool me for a second. “Do I know you?” I had expected my name to be the

  • Chapter 36: Contracts Progress

Lucas POV Caleb was the one who was taking charge of monitoring the projects. He made sure I wasn't just signing out projects without getting any improvement like it had been in previous times. I trusted him. He was dependable, no-nonsense, and always got the job done.As we approached 8th Avenue, the first glimpse of the project came into view. Massive steel beams rose against the skyline, the skeletal frame of a towering complex that would soon house dozens of businesses. Workers in hard hats moved like ants, cranes loomed overhead, and the hum of machinery filled the air.“Not bad,” I said.“Not bad?” Caleb snorted softly, though he quickly caught himself. “I mean, glad you think so, sir.”I laughed, a deep, rumbling sound. “Relax, Caleb. Credit where it’s due; this is impressive.”We parked near the site, stepping out onto the gravel lot. The ground was uneven, a mix of dirt and crushed stone that crunched under my boots. A foreman hurried over, clipboard in hand, his face light

  • Chapter 35: Increased Pay

Lucas POV Throughout the day, there were rumours flying around the office about an important looking man. Turns out that Stella had told her friend the story and soon enough everyone in the office was talking about it. Thank heavens I had on a hat. If she recognised me then it would have been a matter of time that my face would be touring the office. As soon as Jeremy reported for work I called him into office. He arrived quickly, clipboard in hand, a slight sheen of sweat on his brow. He looked overworked and from what I was beginning to uncover, probably underpaid too. After asking him to send a delegation to the hospital where Stella's father was admitted, I sat him down for a discussion. I leaned back in my chair, fixing him with a sharp look. “Yes. We need to have a serious discussion about how this office is running.” He froze for a moment, clearly caught off guard. “Of course, sir. What about, specifically?” I turned my monitor so he could see the spreadsheet I’d been

  • Chapter 34: Good Samaritan

Lucas POV I made my way to my company. No one had arrived yet so I didn't rush. I strolled into the office without having to keep my eyes over my shoulder at all times. It was nice to walk without feeling so scared of anyone. I was about to make it past the group of cubicles when I heard quiet sobbing. It came from one of the cubicles and I stopped to have a look. When I leaned in to steal a glance I caught sight of a troubled woman. She was hunched over her desk trying unsuccessfully to muffle her tears. I took a glance around her desk. The empty box of pizza and the upturned cups of coffee told me that she had probably been up all night. Documents are scattered on her desk but they were pushed away from Where her head lay. I could have continued my walk to the office but this woman grabbed my curiosity. I wanted to know what was wrong with her. I did the only thing I could think of to grab her attention. I tapped my fingers on the desk beside me. Her head shut up from where it

  • Chapter 33: Ava's Question

Lucas POV “Thank you for putting all this together,” I said, setting down the glass of wine that I had just gulped down. I had been careful to take a little of everything to avoid getting intoxicated. “It was the little I could do to show how happy I was to see how you've progressed. I wish there was more I could do to prove how supportive I am.” “You've done more than enough. You've beat my wildest dreams.” “I could say the same. I'm proud of you.” She paused. A long sigh escaped her lips. She placed both hands on the table supporting her chin as she leaned in. “So what do you do?” She asked in a short inquisitive tone. I saw this bombshell coming from a mile away. Last time, my legs were blown out from below me. This time, I brought shin pads to the field. I sighed. “I don't think I should answer that question. It might ruin this lovely evening that we are having.” Her eyelids lifted in suspicion. “No, Lucas. I just wanted to know the kind of job my husband does.” My hesita

  • Chapter 32: Celebration Dinner

Lucas POV ”What do you mean by we are being followed?” I asked just to be sure I wasn't panicking for the wrong reason. “One of my men had seen a suspicious man staring at us in the restaurant. He just confirmed that he saw the same man in a car following us a while ago.” Now I was panicking. Who could possibly want to track me down? For what reasons would anyone be following me? I still hadn't announced my newly acquired wealth so who would think to try and kidnap me?“Are we in danger?” I asked. “There's no need to panic. We are going to get the man. One of the patrol cars spotted him driving this way. He sped off before we could get a chance to ask him questions.” This must be the dangerous side of this life. But I wasn't going to back out just because things were starting to get uncomfortable. “I need to find out who that was and whoever sent him. I need men on it as soon as possible. And by that, I mean right now.” Caleb looked at me with a proud face. He must not have ex

  • Chapter 31: Is Lucas A Spy?

Lady Wright I paced around the room. There was no one at home so I didn't have to worry about anyone asking me questions about why I was so rattled. I wouldn't tell them anyway. But I'm going to tell you. It's because I was about to receive a call from Fletcher. Hours had passed and he still hadn't gotten back to me. The last time we spoke was this morning. He dropped me a text telling me how much it was going to take to track down Lucas. I was awaiting confirmation that he had eyes on Lucas before I sent him his fee. But that confirmation was taking longer than I had hoped. My legs suddenly grew tired from all the pacing about. I immediately sat down and crossed my legs together. That was when a call entered my phone. I jumped up grabbing the phone from the center table. I knocked over a glass of water but I didn't care. I answered the call and scolded Fletcher in one breath. “You better have good news for me or you have a good excuse.” “This is a lot harder than I think. I d
