I could feel my body restoring itself slowly as I sat down on the floor of the dilapidated house.
It could heal faster than before, but I still vividly remembered when I had almost become mush, making me shudder for a few seconds as I understood the mortality of the human body.
This wasn't something that could be avoided, but I knew that as I devoured more and more, my body should evolve accordingly, just like it made my teeth sharper and changed the color of my eyes and hair.
The surroundings were eerily quiet as I was resting, the previous hustle and bustle from all of the training squire seemingly disappeared into the void as they were most likely avoiding me.
Their fear was evident from their actions, they most likely thought that I was going to attack them.
I sighed and shook my head, I felt deep inside that my body wasn't ready for any more devouring sessions, so I had to wait, even if I wanted to eat them, I couldn't, and I wasn't sure what type of reaction the Chuch would have if I ate some of their squires, for prisoners or enemies, it should be ok, but for allies, that was something that shouldn't be done.
That was a dangerous territory I didn't want to go into yet.
As I continued resting, time passed, and I finally heard the door of my new house open. A slight creak came from the door as moonlight poured into the house from two directions now, one from the broken roof, and one from the opened door.
A meek and petite form entered my house. She was trembling from head to toe as she held a bowl of what seemed to be fruits in her hands. She was making small steps towards my location in the darkness as she made an eep sound after she made a wrong step and created a small hole in the floor.
She hastily retrieved her leg before she turned her back to me, thinking that I was behind her after she lost her footing, I decided to pull a prank on her as I got up from the floor and touched her shoulder, making her scream in terror as she dropped to the floor with the bowl of fruits in her grasp. Her whole body was spasming and she was heavily crying as she said:
"Please don't eat me, please don't eat me!"
I shook my head and grabbed her by the shoulder, pulling her up and saying:
"I won't eat you, relax."
The girl seemed to be around one year or so younger than me, fourteen at best.
She had a body full of muscles that could be seen through her training gear, a short bob hair-cut, blonde hair, and terrified green eyes that trembled like a cornered deer's.
I didn't have many interactions with the opposite sex, well besides when I killed them on raids with the bandits, so I wasn't sure what to tell her, in the future, she might be my ally on the battlefield, so it was good to create a good relationship, regardless of her fear or what she was thinking about me.
Seeing that I wasn't munching on her entrails yet made her relax a little bit, she bowed her head awkwardly as she put the bowl of fruits in front of her and said:
"I was sent by one of the nuns to give you dinner! Sorry for intruding!"
I shook my head and looked at the bowl of fruits, I didn't have dessert yet, and I didn't think there would be any trouble with eating fruits. After all, they wouldn't be as energy-charged as bodies were.
I took the bowl of fruits from her stabilizing hands before nodding at her and saying:
"Do you want to eat them together?"
The girl looked at the fruits and scratched the back of her head before a growl came from her stomach, and she blushed slightly in embarrassment.
"You skipped dinner?"
My question made her nod as she fully relaxed, seeing that I was easy to approach.
"Yeah, I have been training all day to become a paladin, just like Lord Aratas! He is so cool and strong!"
She had little stars in her eyes as she praised Aratas, making me wonder if he had a big fan club or not.
From what it seemed like, Aratas might be the top paladin of this Church.
I took a shiny green apple from the bowl of fruits and started to munch on it, the taste was quite sweet and I could say that I haven't eaten such a good apple in my whole life.
It must have had something magical in it, or something among those lines, to boost the growth of the squires and other trainees in this camp.
Seeing that I started eating, she meekly went to the bowl of fruits and took one for herself, seeing that I didn't say anything at all, she started to bite into the fruit ravenously, eating as if she was going to drop dead if she didn't finish the fruit quickly enough.
I finished my apple before I put the bowl of remaining fruits towards her and said:
"I'm not particularly hungry. You can have all of the remaining fruits."
The girl's eyes widened as she looked at my lean physique, I didn't gain any particular muscles from training with the bandits, even though they ran me into the ground, and I didn't become any muscular after eating all of those people either, so she most likely thought that I was quite weak at first glance.
She felt a little bit awkward accepting the fruits, but I insisted, and she ate all of them in the end.
She patted her stomach and smiled at me, I nodded at her and then said:
"Well if that's all, I still need to rest from my previous training as I'm not at full capacity yet. You can go."
The girl nodded before she seemingly remembered something and asked:
"What's your name? Mine is Shira."
I smiled at her, showing a bit of a toothy smile, which I guessed looked unnerving to her before I responded:
"My name is Minato. Nice to meet you, Shira."
Shira nodded, and then left. Leaving me alone in the dark house that was lighted only by the moonlight coming in through the broken roof...
A day and a good night's rest was almost enough for me to get back to full power, my regenerative capabilities had increased immensely after that near-death experience, and even though my body was unable to absorb all of the energy that I got from eating the last two people, I still improved in all areas.I clenched my fists as I got up from the floor of the broken house that I was in before I stretched my body and got out to be greeted by the first ray of sunlight that slowly came down from the morning sky.It was a beautiful sunrise that I didn't get to enjoy when I lived as a bandit. It was always killing pillaging, and doing things that made me uncomfortable until I became numb to them. Of course, now they brought a rush to me that I had no idea how to explain besides the fact that I most likely got addicted to doing those things.I sighed and shook my head as Shira slowly made her way toward my house. She still seemed a little bit unsure about me since she was walking very slowly
After one day of getting my body used to the forms of swordsmanship, I decided to go back to rest after I bid farewell to Shira for the day.My sleep was just like a baby's, soft and long until the rays of dawn hit me in the face and woke me up.But that wasn't the only thing that woke me up, I could hear some knocks at the door of the house, and when I got up and opened it, I saw Aratas's tall body waiting for me.He looked down at me and said:"You have to meet your new comrades on the battlefield. It has also been a few days since you rested. Do you feel like you can eat more?"I looked down at my stabilized hands and thought for a few seconds before nodding. I was looking forward to completing the set of basic swordsmanship. And to see my new comrades, which I will most likely have to make contingency plans against, just in case the hunger will betray them on the battlefield, and they would attack "allied" troops. We went back into the Church, then took the long corridor to the du
The two remaining teens were quite shaken. They weren't sure if they were going to follow Arata's words or not. The girl even took a step forward and asked meekly:"Do we truly have to eat them? Can't we give them a proper burial?"Aratas shook his head and then said:"They have failed, thus they cannot enjoy a proper burial. Maybe if they made some contributions to the Church, but they haven't done anything to deserve a proper burial. You two, eat them now!"Arata's eyes were serious as he unleashed a little of his aura to coerce them.I narrowed my eyes and made sure to take note of this. Those two could be me in the future. Of course, I didn't have such moral problems, but what if the Church just directly sent me to my death in a suicide mission?I shook my head and kept it clear while waiting for the two to decide. The boy with white hair decided as he took a step forward and started eating the mangled flesh from the floor, just like an animal, his eyes were watering, but he conti
After a day of training, I returned to my residence, meeting with the two new squad mates. Who were now a little bit more refreshed after resting.Zerath looked at me with a serious expression as he covered Mawi with his body, making sure that I wasn't going to do anything to them.I shook my head. They were quite untrusting, but that didn't matter.I sat down and started to regulate my breathing according to the information residing in the basic sword technique. While I couldn't improve or learn further, the breathing technique could make my mind clearer and give me a better rest. The information I got from eating the prisoners even stated that the technique would heal wounds once it reached a high level, but none of the people that I ate reached said level with the technique, and even if they did, I would need to eat quite a few of them to reach the same level as they did. This wasn't something that I could look forward to.I shook my head, clearing it using the breathing technique
Somehow I wasn't impeded at all when I left the training grounds and started taking a stroll through the city.Maybe they didn't monitor us as harshly as I thought? Or maybe they didn't care at all, considering the thing that was currently residing within me.I walked around, however, most of the people in the city were rushing in and out, going to shops to buy things, or straight going up to rest at inns. None of them wanted to chat with me at all.I wanted to find a place where I could get some help regarding the slithering thing inside of me, but where could I go?The city was rather big, so I wandered around. The Church was the second biggest building and one of the most important landmarks in the city, so according to this, I decided to go to the biggest building in the city and find out if there was anything important there. The biggest building was a long tower that stretched up into the sky.The entrance of the tower wasn't guarded at all, and I entered it quite easily. The lo
I decided to nod toward the healer and take up his offer:"I will do it, but hopefully you guys won't back out or do something else to me while he analyses whatever he needs to."The healer chuckled and shook his head as he told me:"That would be no problem. We the mage guild pride ourselves in our ability to hold up the bargains we make, don't worry."I didn't know much about the reputation of the mage guild, but up till now, they looked like an upright organization. Of course, they must have had their dark side, just like any other place with considerable power.I got up from the table and the healer waved his hand, indicating for me to follow behind him.We left the white room through an indistinguishable door, making our way through corridors that looked like we were in a maze before entering a dark room with a chilly atmosphere. The darkness was profound, but my improved eyesight let me spot a person hiding inside of it, sitting on a chair behind what should be a desk, if the ou
After I got back to the Church, things seemed to be rather calm on the surface.Zerath and Miwa were being ostracized by the other trainees when I arrived back at the training camp. For now, I didn't have any intentions to interact with them. They would most likely be deadweight in the future, so they weren't people that I needed to create a good relationship with. The only person who got my attention was Shira. Her improvements were as quick, or even quicker than mine!I couldn't help but be a little jealous as I saw her concentrated expression as she swung a wooden training sword. Her aura was gradually increasing with every swing as she showed all twelve basic moves of the Church's swordsmanship. Her mastery over them was beautiful but deadly. Her agility and strength could be easily observed from the way her firm muscles exploded with power at every swing she did.I couldn't help but shake my head as I saw Zerath and Miwa try to walk toward me.The whispering between the other tra
I, Miwa, and Zerath were resting inside of the somewhat broken house. Both Zerath and Miwa couldn't sleep properly as they were thinking about what type of mission they would be given tomorrow.I didn't particularly care about the mission. As long as it was an extermination one, it will be quick and easy to do.With my current strength, I knew that there weren't many bandits or other types of lawbreakers that could match me. It would only be a problem if a fought a fellow superhuman or someone from the other four Churches.Zerath and Miwa didn't interact with me at all during our cohabitation. They knew that I didn't want to be bothered, so they acted accordingly, at least they weren't dumb, even though they were still rather weak and naive. However, this was the first time in a while had Zerath asked me something:"Minato, do you think we will have trouble with the mission tomorrow?"I looked towards him and didn't say anything for a few seconds before shaking my head and saying:"Pr
