Chapter 33 - An Esquire

While everyone was drowning in grief, only Charles seemed different. His face remained calm, as it had been since he entered the room. He seemed unaffected by what Peter had said.

"If this is their will, we must follow it," Charles said, pausing for a moment and not continuing. "But that does not mean we can do nothing else."

What Charles said was like waking Daniel from his stupor. His hope returned.

He looked at the old man with a curious expression on his face, as if to ask, "Is there anything else I can do to get the palace?" Like Daniel, Charles' three sons showed the same curiosity.

"You have to become a nobleman!" Charles said, staring intently at Daniel.

Charles' words startled everyone in the room. Their eyebrows raised. Questions arose in their minds. What did the old man mean? How could Daniel become a noble?

"I will do everything I can for Tectona. But I come from a commoner family. Is it possible for me to become a noble?"
