[Of course not, silly.]
I observed Anne, who remained motionless as the system responded to my question.
"So, it's not her."
[Don't get your hope up, then you won't be disappointed.]
"Haha," I chuckled, leaving them both looking at me with surprise.
"Oh, hello Anne," I replied hesitantly to Anne's greeting.
"We witnessed how you escaped from their riverside cabin, Mr. Harrington."
"Please, call me Danzel. I couldn't do much when facing Terry and Lyan simultaneously. They turned out to be incredibly strong."
"Yes, Danzel. We're not making fun of you. It was the most rational decision you could have made if you wanted to survive. We're thankful you made it back safely. Right now, we need a little help from someone we can rely on." Anne responded with her wide-eyed gaze directed at me. I smiled at her, and she returned the gesture. In the midst of my crumbling world, her smile felt like a glimmer of hope.
"Did you know that Tom is running for mayor? This is a project he plans to build if he successfully assumes office." Dr. Bertha instructed Anne to display a somewhat blurry recording, seemingly captured by a non-professional camera. The recording depicted a future project of Merrick, a copper mine that would only increase their wealth.
"We'll find it even harder to reach our goals if he gains more power," I pointed at the screen.
"Take a closer look, Danzel, at the site layout for the mine." Anne zoomed in on the recording, showing a brief glimpse of the affected area's map, which used to be my home.
"Can they do that? I'm still the rightful owner of that place."
"What can't be done in front of the Merrick family, Danzel."
"What about the waste they'll dispose of into the environment?"
"What do you expect? They even dismiss the safety procedure for their employee. Now why would they invest in waste disposal, especially when it's no longer profitable for them? Stop, before you protest, I already sent this to an environmental NGO. But they've been silenced in advance, as usual," Anne interrupted as she saw me about to speak.
'Is this the reason why you said Merrick was powerful?' I asked the system.
[Yes.]
'In that case, does the strategy you showed me still applicable?'
[If you want to defeat Merrick, it's not just about getting rid of him; that won't solve the problem. There will always be others ready to take his place.]
'You're right.'
"Do the general public know about Merrick's corrupt plans?" I inquired, and Anne and Dr. Bertha exchanged glances. Then, Dr. Bertha explained to me.
"This is a secret project, but we could predict how it would turn out. This project will be his major stepping stone to the mayor's seat, under the pretense of creating thousands of jobs and boosting the local economy. Even those we're trying to defend see our opposition as a stumbling block."
"Wait, from that map, it seems like Mr. Rocky's Inn will also be affected by the eviction?"
"That's right, one stone thrown, two birds hit. They're truly cunning."
"I promise to bring Merrick down to the roots. Argh! Why do people like them seem to shine brighter with each passing day? It's as if karma doesn't exist." I said.
Anne gasped softly.
"What's wrong, Anne?" Dr. Bertha asked, looking at Anne, who was glued to her computer screen, where a small and seemingly insignificant news article had just been opened by Anne.
"It's about Mr. Burrow. It says here that this evening, a gunshot was heard from Mr. Burrow's residence. Mrs. Han confirmed that the body was Mr. Burrow's. He died by suicide, a long-barreled weapon was found beside his body when it was discovered... I can't go on, another one of our friends is gone," Anne sobbed in her seat.
Dr. Bertha sighed deeply. "He was truly exhausted from the fight. I respect your decision, my friend. I hope you meet Marie in heaven."
While they reminisced about Mr. Burrow, I couldn't help but remember his expression when I left. His distant, vacant look. And the documents he had given me were a sign that he was prepared to leave this world. The events of this evening were the determining factor, and I didn't pick up on it. Mr. Burrow repeatedly spoke about his "legacy." Oh, how foolish I was! If only I had known that Mr. Burrow, a man as resolute as he was, intended to take his own life, I surely would have forbidden it!
"Does this mean you were the last person he saw today, Danzel?" Dr. Bertha asked.
"Yes, I truly didn't notice. Now, looking back, he did show signs of making that decision. He told me that the documents he handed over were his most valuable possessions. Why would he give them to a young man he had just met like me, if not to say goodbye? Damn it!" I cursed, not at Mr. Burrow, but at myself.
"It's not your fault. In fact, your presence might have been a lifeline for Mr. Burrow. He probably transferred his burden onto you, believing that you could carry out his vengeance. He had been planning to join Marie for a while, especially given his limitations. He's been struggling long enough. I believe he left with a content heart," Anne said soothingly.
"Yes, I feel the same way. When I saw those documents on your desk, they were already a sign. We all know how possessive he was about those documents, yet he handed them over to you so readily. You must have convinced him in a special way. I don't know how."
"I simply offered to take him for a walk, based on Mrs. Han's recommendation. Is Mrs. Han also part of your group?"
"Yes, she's one of the founding members. We only recruit individuals who have a proven grudge against Merrick. We have to be cautious because we need loyal members. If even one person is greedy, this organization would have dissolved a long time ago."
"So, what do we do about Mr. Burrow?"
"Nothing. We can't be associated with him in any way. Any connection to Mr. Burrow would put us in Merrick's crosshairs."
"This battle is incredibly complex."
"When dealing with Merrick, there's no such thing as being too cautious. We MUST be cautious," Dr. Bertha emphasized, and I nodded in agreement.
""Hey, look at this! The news of Mr. Burrow's death suddenly made it to the front page. But they changed the wording; it now says Mr. Burrow didn't commit suicide, but was murdered by Danzel Harrington. The motive is alleged to be the possession of important documents belonging to Mr. Burrow. Oh my... This must be Merrick's doing. They must think that the documents you took contain Merrick Chemical's wrongdoing, Danzel."
"Outrageous!" I exclaimed, especially when my face, emerging from Mr. Burrow's residence, was displayed in such detail, showing the bag containing the documents in my hand, along with the caption "Wanted" on the photo.
"Even though, if they indeed had footage, they would know I was far away when that happened!""We know. This is just their tactic to defame you, Danzel. 'One stone, two birds,' as they say."I clenched my fists in anger. These people couldn't be underestimated! "Actually, I already have a plan."Anne and Dr. Bertha's attention was now fully on me. In the dimly lit, cramped room, I outlined my plan, a plan that had actually been formulated by the system in my head.***"Are you sure?" Dr. Bertha interjected, "But how is it possible? You don't have the capacity for that."He hesitated after I explained the procedure for a complete face-lift to change my identity entirely. The only person who could perform this was Dr. Bertha himself, known as the 'miracle worker.' Ironically, he didn't entrust anyone to touch his own messed-up face. For him, the only one who could do it properly was himself, and it would damage his pride if someone else did it and the result didn't meet his expectations
"Who's this clown?" Margaret Merrick asked with a condescending tone, her face stiff and unable to express any emotion due to the extensive plastic surgery she has undergone. One of her minions stepped forward and handed her, her husband and child each touch-screen tablets containing information about me, all of which I suspected had been meticulously detailed by the system, leaving no room for errors. "Based on this information, your reputation is quite remarkable. Strangely, why am I only now learning about you? It's as if you were created out of thin air," Tom Merrick questioned this time, an old man with the soul of a devil. His face wasn't much different from his wife's, leaving me wondering about the fate of the plastic surgeon who had worked on them – were they still alive, or had they vanished? Their work was a joke. "Because I chose to be so. Of course, I had to be careful, especially when it concerns all of you. Look at what happened to these people, all ending the same w
"Why does your face look wrinkled?" Lyan inquired. He was a tall, brown-skinned man of mixed African and Caucasian heritage, his head always clean-shaven. But the difference now was that he had a thin beard and mustache, adding to the allure of his features. "Yeah, has someone been bothering you?" Terry added. They were gathered in the cabin shortly after Bash's call. Regardless of the situation, when Bash asked, they had no right to refuse. After all, their parents and they themselves worked under the Merrick family. "Some guy showed up earlier and threatened to overthrow the company. His attitude was incredibly annoying." "Why should you worry? Merrick Corp can't be shaken by such a minor threat, right?" "That's what I told Tom! But that old man threatened to take back the 20% share that the brat took from FnB and Merrick Entertainment! That's why I'm annoyed." Hearing this, Terry and Lyan were taken aback. Both of them worked in those departments. It was their playground, whe
"You! What do you want?" Anne shouted at Bash. *Whoosh.* Bash forcefully pulled the cloth covering Anne's head, not knowing why he had covered the face of this arrogant woman in the first place. "Surely, you desire me, you promiscuous harlot. You've been pretending to be high and mighty all this time, haven't you? Tsk tsk, it's a shame to waste such a beautiful face and body on that uncouth man. After this, you'll learn what it's like when I take you! Hahaha, don't crawl back to me begging for more later, understood?" Bash taunted, followed by laughter from his two friends. "Ugh! You wish!" Anne spat directly in Bash's face, making Bash slap her so hard that her lips bled. He wiped Anne's spit off his face. "Let's see if you can still talk big after what we're going to do to you," Bash threatened as he choked Anne's throat tightly. "Dude, dude, hey! You can kill her; we haven't tasted her yet!" Lyan pulled Bash's arm, freeing it from Anne's nearly suffocated neck. *Cough* "You
'You never mentioned that she has a boyfriend!' [Really? I must have forgotten.] "Haha, not funny. Especially from the Merricks! Are you out of your mind?" [Tsk, he's not in the picture. Through my thorough investigation, he also harbors resentment toward Tom and Margareth Merrick. His parents were supposed to take over the Merrick business empire, but Tom sabotaged them, so he ended up taking over. For your information, he also doesn't like Bash. You two could be friends. The enemy to your enemy is your friend.] 'Oh my God, you really don't understand human emotions, do you?' [Will our plan fail because you have feelings for Anne? Should I look for another candidate?] 'No. But how will that guy react when he finds out his girlfriend is married to another man? And no, I don't have feelings for Anne.' [Pfft... I think he'll understand.] 'Okay, you really don't get it.' [I'm offended.] 'Good, now you're acting like a human.' [Hoof... Humans are confusing. I've given you an ou
*Cough* Dr. Bertha sputtered his drink upon hearing Alex's unfriendly statement. He glanced at me again nervously, gesturing for me to sit and not respond to Alex's sharp remark. "How long are you staying here? You're not welcome here, and one more thing, be careful how you speak to my guests. You have no manners, acting like you own the place," Mr. Rocky retorted coldly to Alex, who had just swallowed his last bite of grilled meat slices. "Pops!" Anne interjected, clearly upset. "What? Why did you let this traitor in? You know they're going to demolish our house, don't you? You're letting me live my last days in unrest by associating with him, Anneke Zane." It was the first time I had seen Mr. Rocky angry, and it made the atmosphere awkward. I wanted to stand up and leave the room, but Mr. Rocky patted my hand to keep me seated. "We've discussed this, Pops! Alex is not like Tom Merrick." "He's still a Merrick! That will never change. You! You always make my granddaughter and m
"Sir, the young master has arrived home," Zhar reported to Tom Merrick, who was still working in his home office. Hearing this, Tom closed his documents abruptly. "Tell him to see me right now." "Of course, Sir," Zhar excused himself and went to find Bash, who had just entered with his two friends through the front door. They were on their way to Bash's room. Zhar couldn't help but wonder about his young master's childish behavior. "Look, the old man's watchdog is here," Terry whispered to Bash as he approached. However, Zhar could still hear him. Bash chuckled at Terry's provocation. "Young master, your father requests your presence," Zhar said, bowing slightly with a stoic expression. "Argh, what does that old man want now? Another lecture? I can't be bothered!" Bash complained, ignoring his Dad's request. He continued to lead his friends up to his recreation room, filled with various entertainment options. "Your father wishes to discuss something very important, Sir, right aw
'That was quite surprising.' [Yes, humans and their lusts.] 'I'm human too,' I protested. [Exactly, and that's what strengthens my point.] 'Are you jealous of my feelings for Anne?' [I don't possess emotional intelligence, dummy.] 'But from your tone, it doesn't feel that way?' [It's just your feelings. Anyway, don't forget to prepare your performance this evening; you need to be convincing.] 'Of course... Wait, are you avoiding my question? Again?' [...] 'Haha,' I chuckled inwardly at it. How could I find happiness just by teasing an AI? *** "Is everything ready, Zhar?" "Yes, Sir. These are the documents signed by the court," Zhar said as he handed over the necessary files. "Good, we can begin the execution. I can't wait to see that old man beg and kneel before me. Prepare the vehicle." "Yes, Sir." Zhar bowed and left the office to prepare all the necessary arrangements. Tom called Bash, who he hadn't seen since morning. "Where is that boy? Just because his parents o
