Mason hung his head as he listened to Scarlett recite to him a long list of reasons why he should not treat her like the flower she was not. He understood Scarlett's wish for independence, and not just independence, for the ability to not be a liability.

He knew more than anything that she was terrified of holding him down and he understood, not just that, he loved her even more for her determination and drive and for the iron will she possessed. She had been through a whole lot these past few years, Mason knew that clearly, more than half of her suffering had stemmed from people's disapproval of their union and Scarlett's strong headedness as she refused to listen to what was honestly common sense.
