Chapter 18

It was afternoon and Vere and Mira's schoolmate, Red, arrived at the resort and wasted no time they headed straight to the room where Mr. and Mrs. Fuentez were staying and Vere and Red began their story about what happened.

"Huh? How did that happen when you were together? And it's your fault because you invited them to go to that mountain," echoing Mrs. Fuentez's frustration pointing at Red.

"I'm so sorry, Mr. and Mrs. Fuentez," Red began, his voice filled with genuine remorse. "I truly dislike what happened. Please forgive me. I promise that I will do everything I can   to find Mira."

Mr. Fuentez sighed deeply. "Vere, do what you have to do."

" Yes, I promise you that I will not stop looking for Mira," Vere assured Mr. and Mrs. Fuentez. With those words, he and Red said their goodbyes and left their room.

As Vere and Red walked towards the hotel lobby, Vere pondered his next move. He sent Red to the city which is an hour's travel by sea vessel to deliver a message to James, his private assistant. That day Red departed for the town and left Vere to continue his search for Mira. Vere headed to the car that Red owned and he drove to the police station, where he intended to report his wife Mira's disappearance.

Vere arrives at the police station, and he is greeted by a police officer at the front desk. "Hi, Sir. What can I do for you today?"

"I am here to report the disappearance of my wife, Mira," Vere replied. And he continued to tell the story about what happened. However, the police officer who initially approached him seemed less than helpful, which quickly escalated Vere's frustration.

"Hey, listen, Mr. Policeman, I'm not here for nonsense things this is urgent. I'm here because I need your help to find my wife."

As Vere stood there, the tension in the room reached its breaking point. The uncooperative police officer's dismissive attitude had pushed him to his limit. In a sudden fit of anger and desperation, Vere lashed out and struck the officer.

The room erupted into chaos as the officer stumbled back, shocked by Vere's sudden outburst. And the Other officers quickly intervened, and before he knew it, Vere found himself in handcuffs.

One of the officers, clearly taken aback by the turn of events, exclaimed, "Look what have you done, Vere?"

As Veres, fits of anger now turned inward, he gritted his teeth and replied, "I'm sorry, please. I really had to find my wife, Mira.”

Upon realizing the gravity of his mistake, Vere watched helplessly as the officers were left with no choice but to lock him up, given the assault on their colleague. The cell door closed behind him, and Vere's frustration and sense of helplessness continued to mount.

In the confines of his cell, Vere knew that he had jeopardized his mission with his impulsive actions. He felt trapped, unable to continue the search for Mira. In this dark moment, all he could do was hope and pray for the return of Red and James, who were now his best and perhaps only chance of solving the mystery and reuniting with his beloved wife.

At the stroke of seven in the evening, the door of Vere's cell resounded with a metallic clank as it swung open. The police officer on duty gestured for Vere to step out, and he complied. Though he was not feeling his best, a rush of relief washed over him as he exited the cell.

Vere's spirits lifted when he saw Red and Detective Lee engrossed in conversation with other police officers. He approached them, a mix of gratitude and remorse swirling within him.

"Mr. Vere, I'm truly sorry for what happened," Detective Lee said, his voice carrying a tinge of regret. Vere shook his head, realizing the weight of his impulsive actions.

"No, Detective Lee, it's my fault. I shouldn't have lost control like that."

After Vere's release from the cell, he, Red, and Detective Lee wasted no time in resuming their search. They headed back to the hospital, following the directions on the card provided by the medic, Steven. As they drove, Vere's sharp eyes caught something unusual on the street corner, a medic's car, seemingly abandoned, with a flat tire and no driver in sight.

Vere's intuition kicked in, and he urged the others to stop the car. With a sense of urgency, they examined the deserted vehicle, and Vere's hunch deepened. Like it was clear that something wasn't right. They quickly decided to leave the scene and return to the hospital mentioned on the card.

Upon arriving at the hospital, Vere spotted Steven. However, Vere's emotions got the best of him, and he couldn't contain his anger any longer. Vere confronted Steven, demanding to know where Mira had been taken. Detective Lee stepped in to mediate, sensing that there might be a reasonable explanation for the situation.

As tensions flared, Steven finally admitted, " We take west it's our shortcut to reach the hospital immediately, but we encountered car trouble, and Mira was in critical condition. We flagged down a passing car and rushed her to the nearest hospital for immediate first aid. After stabilizing her, we transferred her here to this hospital for further treatment."

With Steven's revelation, Vere's anger began to subside, and it was replaced by a mix of relief and gratitude. Suddenly Vere turned to Steven and said, "Thank you for saving her life. I'm sorry for jumping to conclusions." Steven, understanding the anxiety that had gripped Vere, nodded.

"I understand, Mr. Vere. Our priority was to ensure Mira received the medical attention she needed." With a newfound understanding, Steven guided them to the room where Mira was admitted, bringing them one step closer to reuniting with her and unraveling the mystery behind her sudden disappearance.

When Vere gently pushed open the hospital room door, his heart skipped a beat at the sight of Mira, who was awake but still bearing the visible signs of her ordeal, pain etched into her appearance.

Without hesitation, Vere rushed to her side, embracing her with a mix of relief and concern. With a trembling voice filled with emotion, Vere spoke softly to Mira, his love and concern evident.

"Mira, my love, we're going to get you transferred to a larger hospital in the city as soon as we can. You'll receive the best possible treatment there, my love. You're going to be okay."

As they held each other tightly, an hour later, a gentle knock echoed through the room. Mr. and Mrs. Fuentez, accompanied by Red, entered together. Their faces were a blend of worry and relief, their eyes filled with compassion. And they rushed to hug their daughter.

As the evening continued, Vere, Mr. and Mrs. Fuentez, and Red gathered to discuss the incident and Mira's impending transfer to a city hospital for her treatment. In the room, a mixture of emotions flowed through them, relief that she was now safe from immediate danger, alongside a deep and abiding concern for her recovery and the enigmatic circumstances surrounding her disappearance.

Mr. Fuentez, his gratitude shining through, was the first to speak. His words carried a deep sincerity as he expressed, "Vere, there are no words to truly convey our gratitude for your unwavering determination and tireless efforts to find Mira. We find comfort in knowing she's on the route to a hospital that can provide the best care for her."

An hour later, as night blanketed the surroundings, the seacraft was prepared for its voyage. Onboard, Mira was nestled securely, a route to a larger city hospital with more comprehensive medical facilities.

The vessel pulled away from the island's shoreline, and Vere positioned himself at the railing, his eyes locked onto the silhouettes of the landscape fading in the distance. Vere couldn't shake the memories of recent events that had etched themselves deeply into his thoughts.

These memories cast a haunting shadow over his mind as he contemplated the journey ahead, filled with hope that it would lead them closer to answers and healing. Little did he anticipate the unforeseen tragedy that lay in wait, concealed by the dark night.
