“All I need is your cooperation, and I assure you, this will be all easy,” Lieutenant Wesley said.

Lana was seated before him on a table with her hands cuffed. She was in the interrogation room. A place she had never thought she would end up in. After everything that had happened last night, she thought she would be given a break but that didn’t seem to be the case. They were actively working on making sure that none of them ever saw the light of the day again.

“I have nothing to say,” Lana replied.

Lieutenant Wesley sighed and grabbed the ends of the table trying to keep his composure. She was making this much harder than it was supposed to be. All she had to do was tell him the truth, and maybe the judge would reduce her sentence, but he doubted she would want to say anything.

Before going into the interrogation room, he had talked to Jain who told him not to go easy on Lana. She had told him that members of affiliates of the cartel didn’t usually open up easily. And now, Lieute

“R—Rylan,” Jain stuttered. She was surprised that he was there. It was close to twenty-four hours since he had saved her life. Things have grown ever since then. They had talked over a cup of coffee earlier this morning, and now he was back here. Rylan looked dazzling in his black suit. His dark brown hair was combed neatly and glistened in the fluorescent lighting. His amber eyes shone better and his grin made him look like an Olympic god.Jain gulped hard as she stared at him. She could feel her stomach churn which was now a recurring theme whenever she was around him. “Hello, Detective.”Jain blinked hard. “Y—You shouldn’t be here,” she pointed out. They both had sustained injuries last night. It was a miracle that they were still alive. The only reason they were was because they had each other’s backs. “I should say the same for you,” he said looking at her bandaged arm. When Jain looked at it, she scoffed. “I’m fine,” she lied. “I mean, I’ll be.”Lieutenant Wesley cleare

“Are you okay?” Detective Jain Reynolds asked, rushing to Rylan who had just come out of the room. Rylan nodded his head as he straightened his clothes once more. He was feeling accomplished now. Everything was set. They had all teamed up against him and he had still found a way to win. Rylan didn’t know if that was luck or the work of his intelligence. “I’m fine, Detective.”Jain flashed him a smile and pulled him into a hug. Lieutenant Wesley, who was still standing by the window, was surprised by this. It seemed he wasn’t the only one as Rylan’s eyes bulged out when Jain hugged him. He sighed and wrapped his hands around her, hugging her back. Jain wanted it to stay this way forever. She loved the warmth he provided her. It made her feel safe, something she hadn’t felt in a long time. Finally, she let go of Rylan and her cheeks heated up. She took a step backward and scratched her neck feeling mortified. Rylan could only chuckle while Lieutenant Wesley shook his head behind he

Rylan felt that was the stupidest move he had made. He had watched Jain walk back into the precinct controlling the urge to go after her and place a kiss on her lips. It was a chance that wasn’t going to happen again. And so as he stepped out of the Lamborghini, he slammed the door heading towards the porch. The mix of emotions he had felt over the last seventy-two hours made him cringe. It was something he never wanted to experience again. As he swung the door open, he found Williams standing at the door. This puzzled him. “Williams?” He called. “Sir. You have a few guests waiting for you,” he responded. Rylan arched an eyebrow at that. “Guests?”Williams stepped aside and waved him in. Rylan stepped into the living room and found three figures sitting on the couches. This baffled him. “What the hell are you guys doing here?”Karen McCullough sat across the room waiting for Rylan to send them away. This was her last resort. She had lost everything—her father and the company. T

Rylan clenched his jaws as he ran on the treadmill. He was going faster than he was supposed to, but that didn’t matter to him. He was happy that things were going back to normal. But there was only one thing left for him to cross off his list—finding his father. Only his father knew where his mother’s corpse was. Rya hated the fact that he would have to confront his father about this. But nothing made sense. If Paul wasn’t there for him, why would he take his mother’s corpse away? It wasn’t adding up. Williams had been searching for days but had found nothing yet. He hadn't spoken to Jain since then as well. It seemed she was pretty serious about them not seeing each other again. That didn’t bother Rylan like he thought it would. He was better off alone. When he couldn’t keep up with the pace, Rylan turned off the treadmill and walked it out before stepping off it. He was panting now and was covered in sweat and he headed towards the bench at the end of the gymnasium. There was hi

“Are you sure about this?” Williams asked as he helped Rylan wear his suit jacket. Rylan was looking at himself in the mirror. He was dressed in a navy blue suit with a white undershirt. His dark brown hair was combed neatly and his amber eyes shone in the mirror. He looked stunning. There was finally hope after so many months. He was finally going to learn what had happened to his mother. Rylan had been tired of hearing so many different versions of the story. He wanted to learn the truth from the source itself, which was his father. Rylan couldn’t deny the fact that he was feeling nervous about meeting his father. The man who had abandoned him and his mother when they needed his help most. There was a lot he had to say to him. A lot of questions he wanted to ask. “I have to do this, Williams.”Williams sighed as he heard that. He patted both shoulders of Rylan after dressing him. Rylan looked at himself in the mirror one more time before being satisfied with the dressing. Yeste

Rylan could feel his heart thumping as he stared at the man before him. How could he not tell that he was his son? He looked exactly like him. The man was quiet and he waited for Rylan to speak but no words could converge. As Rylan stared at him continually, he could feel only one thing which was rage. And so he did the only thing he could; he stepped forward and slammed a fist on the man’s cheek. Paul stumbled backward and held his cheek in surprise. He had been taken unawares by this stranger. The last thing he had expected was to hear a knock on his door. He didn’t expect anybody to see him, because nobody knew about him. But here this stranger pulled up to him and gave him a good hit. “Sweet mother of…” Paul mumbled as he regained his stamina. “What the hell did you do that for?”“That’s for abandoning me and my mother.”Paul looked at him in confusion. “What are you talking about?” He asked, rubbing his cheek. Rylan was in disbelief. His father couldn't recognize him. This

THIRTY-TWO YEARS AGO…“Any questions?” Paul Richmond asked, facing the class. Nobody raised their hands. Everybody seemed disinterested in the class. They were all chatting and looking through their pagers. It was a typical college student attitude. Paul Richmond shook his head and reached for his bag. “Very well, we shall continue from where we stopped in our next class,” he said. The whole class rose from the seats immediately to leave the theater. “And read pages 56 to 77, for the term paper,” he added but he knew nobody had heard him. His voice had been buried in the ruckus caused by the students leaving the classroom. Paul grabbed his luggage and cursed under his breath. He hated his job but he needed it. He thought that teaching young college students would be a good thing, but it turned out to be one of the worst decisions he had made. He would have been better off with High school teenagers. Maybe they would have been worse than them. Who knew”“Umm…Professor Richmond?”

“Come in, Professor,” the man behind the desk said. Paul Richmond stepped into the office and closed the door behind him. As he took a seat before the desk, he knew why he was there. It meant that he was in big trouble. To be invited to the vice chancellor’s office could mean only one thing. Which was that he was getting fired. “You’re a smart man, Professor Richmond,” the vice chancellor said, arranging the files on his desk. “So I already know you guessed why you’re here.”Paul nodded in response. He had broken one of the academic laws in the school which was not to have any illegal affair with any of the students. Paul had broken that law when he got Lauren pregnant. It had all happened in a flash. Paul hadn’t seen it coming. Things had spiraled out of control ever since he had asked Lauren out for dinner. She had accepted and they had grown from there. They had gone out on dates pretty much after, and the class had spread rumors about them sleeping with each other. While those

VENICE, ITALY6 MONTHS LATER. “Stay away from me!” The man yelled as he ran through the dim streets for shelter. Behind him, a man dressed in a black suit with a black mask was running after him. In his hand was an FN 5’7. The man in black pursued him endlessly. When the Italian man stopped for shelter, he pulled out his gun from the pockets of his leather jacket and aimed at the man in black. “Rylan. Watch out,” Williams called in his ear. “Holy shit!” Rylan yelled on his breath as the man pointed the gun in his direction. Two shots were fired and Rylan managed to dodge the bullets before they could hit him. “Are you sure this is our guy?” Rylan asked. “Affirmative. Dominic De Rossi,” Williams replied through the comms. “I just hope you’re right.”“When have I ever been wrong?”Rylan rolled his eyes and fired back at Dominic. The shot whizzed past Dominic’s head and he scrambled to his feet immediately. Rylan saw this and decided to go after him. They were on the main stre

“They let you in?” Jain asked. “Of course they would.”Jain sighed and drank her cappuccino. They were both seated at a table in the cafe. It was at their favorite spot—the table by the window. It had been two days since Rylan had spoken to Frederick. He could still remember the shock on his face when he told him he had forgiven him. It wasn’t something that Frederick had expected. Frederick was aware that he despised him, but there was no need to keep that grudge anymore. The battle had been won. The best thing he could do now was move on and that was ok his agenda. Jain shook her head in disbelief. She was baffled that they would let Rylan into the prison to speak to Frederick McCullough. Well, he was Rylan Daystar. “So what did you tell him?”Rylan lifted his cup of cappuccino and took a sip from it. His eyes went to the parking lot outside the window. The morning sun washed all the cars there with its glorious light including his black Audi. “I told him that I forgave him.”Ja

When it arrived, a guard was waiting by the door who was heavily armed. He opened the door and stepped forward. He had a grim look on his face. “Welcome, Mr. Daystar.”Rylan smiled at him and shoved his hands into his pockets. “Where is he?” He asked. “Waiting for you, sir.”Rylan nodded and stepped forward. He was in a prison facility, one of the most dreaded in the country. Rylan was here to see someone special to him. He would call it a mockery, but there was something he would love to say. This was the last thing on his bucket list before he could tag this mission as a success. They arrived at a room and the guard opened the door for Rylan. Inside the dimly lit room, a figure was sitting at a table dressed in orange. Rylan clenched his jaws and stepped into the room. He turned back to the guard who was still sta

“I thought we were going to head back home?” Jain asked as they headed into their Airbnb. “Well, Los Angeles is a two-hour flight back, and my pilots are off duty for the night,” Rylan said, closing the door behind them. Jain sighed and rubbed her neck nervously. She couldn’t remember the last time she had been in a room alone with a man. That had been with Jacob; five years ago. Rylan took off his suit jacket and hung it on the cloth rag before folding his undershirt. “If this makes you uncomfortable I could get a different room for myself.”Jain turned to him. “You could do that?” She asked. “I mean, there’s no need for that.”Rylan arched an eyebrow at her as he folded his sleeve once more. “Okay. If you say so.”Jain nodded and proceeded to the fireplace. She was gazing at the crackling fire as she held her shoulders. It brought her soothing warmth. There was a center table in the small living room and on it was a bucket of ice with a bottle of champagne sitting in it. “Wou

She had managed to see the world through another pair of lenses; the expensive kind. Jain never knew that Rylan could be such a sweet person. She could vividly remember the first day she had met him. She and Stanley had been trying to solve the shootout that seemed to have happened to his club. When she had first laid eyes on him, she knew he was trouble. From the way he talked and moved, she assumed that he was as narcissistic and arrogant as the rest of all the billionaires in Los Angeles. But now as she sat across from him in an expensive diner, she couldn’t believe that she had been wrong the whole time. She had missed judging him, and that was fine by him

The party was lavish. There were lots of special dignitaries who filled the scene. The paparazzi wouldn’t stop flashing their cameras at them. This was the biggest party in the city. It was an awards party which would explain why there were so many famous people. A black Lamborghini arrived at the scene and halted on the red carpet. The door lifted and a figure stepped out of the car. It was Rylan Daystar who was dressed in a charcoal black suit with floral patterns and a shawl which was tied at his waist. He looked like a Frenchman. He moved to the other side of the car and opened the door. A woman stepped out of the car all dressed in a white gown. It was Jain, and she had a new look. Her platinum blonde hair which was always long was cut short now making her look dangerously beautiful. Rylan smiled as he watched her close the door of the Lamborghini. A valet came forward and Rylan threw the key to him. “Make sure you take good care of her.”“Yes sir,” the valet said, getting in

Arlene raised an eyebrow at this. “Come in,” Rylan appeared to be speaking to the door until a figure stepped into the room.As Arlene saw the figure, she immediately flashed back. There was no way this was happening. He was real, and he was still alive. He was Paul Richmond. Arlene tried to speak but no words could converge. “Do you have jitters?” Detective Jain Reynolds asked. Rylan turned to surprise. “Of course not.”“Well, you’ve been talking about your thigh for the last two minutes.”“I’m just anxious.”Jain turned to him. “About what?”Rylan kept silent for a few minutes to think about it. “About this, I guess?”Jain scoffed at his words. “You’ve been in front of a crowd a million times. This is the same thing.”“Well not exactly. I’ve never been in front of a crowd filled with police officers.”Jain laughed at his words. “Rylan Daystar is being intimidated by a crowd of police officers. Who would have thought?”Rylan rolled his eyes and placed his hands before him. They were both standing in a room alone. In a few minutes, they would be taken outside to be handed the key to the city. Rylan wasn’t exactly sure why he was there. When Jain had first told him about this at the cafe? He quickly declined the offer. The city saw him as a hero. But he wasn’t. He had so many flaws that would prevent
