HAVING A SECOND THOUGHT

Michael's phone rang, interrupting his train of thought. He glanced at the caller ID and saw that it was not saved on his phone. He answered the call with a sense of dread.

"Hello?" he said.

"Hey! Michael?" a female voice asked.

"Kathryn? But why are you using a different line to call me?"

"Yeah. It's my other line. I don't use it often. I have a piece of news to break," Kathryn said.

What's the news?" he asked, trying to keep his voice steady.

"I'm so excited that your father has been released from the hospital. He's doing well and is back home," Kathryn said.

Michael's heart skipped a beat. He had been so sure that his father was dead. He had planned the funeral, mourned his loss, and now he was being told that his father was alive and well.

"How is that possible?" Michael asked, his voice shaking.

"It seems that the gunshot wounds weren't as severe as we initially thought. Your father was very lucky."
