Chapter 23
After closing the door, Stephen followed Fiona, who was sitting on couch. The room was quiet except for the sound of Fiona's sobs as she wiped tears away. Stephen handed her the tissue box and watched as she crumpled one tissue after another. He felt a surge of protectiveness towards her and couldn't bear to see her suffer like this.

Fiona whispered, "Thanks."

Stephen deliberately gave Fiona time to cry and sat beside her.

Stephen spoke in a low voice, "I'm sorry the dinner was messed up because of my arrival."

"It's not your fault, Stephen! Billy is 'selfish,' as you say," Fiona crumpled the tissue she had just used to wipe away tears.

Suddenly, Fiona's phone rang, jolting them both out of their thoughts. It was a text message from Billy.

[Consider your decision to maintain your marriage well before something worse happens to you or to Stephen.]

Stephen's blood boiled as he read the message. Billy had threatened Fiona, warning her to stay away from Stephen. Stephen knew he had to act
