Chapter 7

                            5 Years Later

Five years passed, but for Rex, it felt like an eternity, though the wounds of betrayal were still fresh, leaking of maggots.

The rules at the NSA were strict; he was never to contact his family or Chelsea. He was not allowed to look them up or spy on them. If he was caught doing any of the above, he was going to be sent back to prison.

It was never easy, but he pulled through it all, and after five years, he became one of the top NSA agents.

He excelled in almost anything: martial arts, guns, spying, and most importantly, being rich.

He managed to amass wealth that not even the NSA was aware of. They mostly gave him missions outside the country, which enabled him to build connections and make deals that he was making money on and putting into offshore accounts.

Five years of saving and not touching money but investing and trusting the right people to invest the money, of which the profits were saved in offshore accounts,

None of his businesses had his name or traces of him. So no one knew about it.

He also excelled in medicine and was a computer genius. He took every skill as important as the next in order to survive.

Finally, he stood in the Director's office, back in his country, ready to retire. His five years were up. He had served the time and paid his dues

The Director walked in.

"I thought you were going to extend your contract." The director joked, but Rex did not find the joke funny. He glared at the old man with a straight face.

"Come on, lighten up."

Rex moved closer to the desk, not in the mood to discuss anything but his retirement and identity.

"What of a promotion? The NSA still needs you," the Director insisted.

"Is my death cleared?" Rex asked, his voice coarse.

"I miss the scared pee-smelling Rex I met five years ago," the Director joked again.

"I have somewhere important to be, can we hurry up?" Rex said.

He was not in the mood to chitchat.

The Director opened his drawer with a fake smile and removed a file.

"Here is your old identity, clean, with no record of the conviction," he said.

Rex grabbed it and began scanning it.

"What are you doing?" The Director asked.

"I'm sending the scans to my lawyer in case of any hidden clauses or added papers," Rex replied with a smile.

The Director chuckled and removed the file for his retirement.

"Any time you feel like coming back, the door is open," the director said, placing the file on the table.

Rex quickly grabbed the file and scanned it, sending it to his lawyer too.

"Once my lawyer confirms everything, I will send you the signed copies," Rex said, packing up everything and walking out of the room.

He had a family to reunite with, and he could not wait to see his father, his brother, and his little sister Sydney.

He got in his car and drove straight to the airport, and within hours he was in front of his house.

The excitement of seeing his family after five years was overwhelming. He paused in his car, wondering how they were going to react. Five years was a lot of years and not only did he disappear but was declared dead.

He closed his eyes, pulled himself together and walked out of the car.

The door to the house opened, and an unrecognized man walked out. He paused in his steps, a little confused.

The man noticed him and asked who he was.

"Is Sydney Grayson inside the house?" He asked.

"No one by that name lives in my house," the man replied.

Rex darted his eyes around in confusion.

"What do you mean your house? That's my father's house!" Rex was almost yelling.

The man backed away. "This is my house; I bought it two years ago."

"What? From who?" Rex moved back a bit.

"The previous family, of course, you should now leave before I call the police," the man warned.

Rex rubbed his temple "No… no…, my apologies, do you know where?"

"None of my business, get out of here!" the man was now yelling.

Irritated Rex walked back to his car. He remembered that he was now free to search for his family. He dialed a number, and within minutes, he was sent an address in the suburbs.

He quickly drove there and found dilapidated buildings not fit for human occupation.

His heart stopped for a few seconds, he could not believe his family was living in such a place. There had to be a mistake, his hacker must have made a mistake.

He went straight for the door on the verge of tearing it down as he knocked.

He was not sure who was going to answer, but when the door opened, his baby sister opened the door.

Her puffy eyes were lost in deep thoughts.

"Sydney, it's me… it's me, Rex, your brother?" he said.

Sydney gazed at him without saying a word.
