Zack stands outside the store, still reeling from an encounter with Mason and Sophia. He can’t believe what he just witnessed — his ex-crush openly admitting to cheating on his boyfriend and showing no remorse for it. And Mason, who has already given up on Celeste and is now fucking a cheater and a whore.
His mind is racing with questions. How can Mason do this? Is he really that desperate for Celeste’s attention?
But as Zack continues to mull over the situation, a loud commotion from inside the storage room snaps him back to reality. He rushes in, only to see a furious Mr. Thompson.
“What’s going on?” he asks breathlessly.
“You think I won’t find out?!” he yells at Zack. “You think you can get away with this?!”
Zack’s heart drops. He looks around frantically, trying to figure out what he is angry about. Did he forget to arrange something? Any missing stocks, perhaps?
“What is it?” Zack asks, his voice trembling.
Mr. Thompson storms towards him, his face red with fury. “I can’t believe you would do something like this!” he yells at him.
“W—what did I do?” he asks, panicked.
“Don’t play dumb with me!” Mr. Thompson booms. “I am not an idiot! I know you've just had sex here!”
Zack feels a lump form in his throat as he stares at his boss in shock and disbelief. He can feel himself turning red from embarrassment.
“It’s not me, it was Mason and his... girl, and—”
“Shut up! You’re fired!” Mr. Thompson cuts him off.
“What? No way!” Zack protests, his voice shaking.
“You heard me,” Mr. Thompson says sternly. “I have zero tolerance for this kind of behavior in my store!”
Zack’s mind races as he tries to come up with a defense, but before he can even speak, Mr. Thompson continues shouting at him.
“I can’t believe this is how you will repay me for giving you a job!”
Zack hangs his head in shame, feeling like a complete failure. How did things escalate so quickly? “But Mr. Thompson, it really is not my fault...” he tries to defend, but he feels deflated already.
“Mason doesn’t have a key to the back store!” he yells, pointing an accusing finger at him.
“But you left it open in a hurry earlier, that’s when they—” Zack tries to explain, but Mr. Thompson interrupts again.
“And now, you’re saying it’s my fault?!”
Zack feels like he’s drowning. He knows he didn’t do anything wrong, but how can he prove it when his boss won’t even listen?
“I’m sorry, sir,” he says instead, feeling defeated.
“I want you gone from this store today!”
He looks up. “But my last pay—”
“Your last pay will be used to clean up this place, and for all the damage you’ve caused during the robbery. You are even on the negatives with me!”
Zack cannot believe it, and even when he’s back to the cashier, he doesn’t know what to do or what to think anymore.
He is fired, and now, he is gathering his things like a meek little thing who won’t amount to anything. He walks out of the store with his head hanging low. Now, how will he explain this to Celeste and his family?
************************
“Zack! What are you doing up there? I’m hungry!” Celeste calls from outside his room, shattering his reverie.
Right, what was he doing? He looks around his tiny room. He is lying on his bed, holding his phone, while waiting for Mason’s reply. He is asking him to come visit so they can play some games, but he leaves it on seen mode.
It seems like, now that Mason has given up on his cousin, he has also given up on their friendship.
“Zack?”
He groans. Celeste just came from work. It’s the first time they meet after that robbery, and now, her voice is annoying him again.
“Zack?!” she calls again. This time, there is a knock on his door.
“Coming!” Zack shouts back.
He gets up from his bed. Besides, it’s their agreement that Celeste will take care of the bills while he takes care of the cleaning of the apartment and cooking for her. Basically, he is her all around servant.
He gets out of his room and sees her outside, her arms crossed against her chest.
“You look like a mess. What happened to you?” she asks, looking at his injuries.
“Nothing,” he responds as he walks past her.
She follows him to the kitchen as he prepares for their dinner.
“Hey, I want fried chicken tonight,” she comments as she watches him take out potatoes from the fridge.
He sighs and puts the potatoes back. “Okay,” he answers, reaching for the chicken instead.
“You should thaw them. I bought them yesterday.”
“Yeah, yeah,” he answers, trying not to sound annoyed. “Hmmm, we are missing ingredients. We don’t have a breading mix.”
“Seriously? But I specifically asked you to buy some yesterday!” Celeste exclaims.
“I know, but something came up at work and I forgot,” Zack explains.
“Why do you always forget things?!” Celeste mutters under her breath as she glares at him.
Zack can feel her disapproving gaze and it only makes him feel much worse. But he doesn’t say anything in return. What can he say? That he was fired because of a stupid mistake that wasn’t even his fault?
“Anything else you want to eat?”
She groans. “Just cook anything, as long as it is with chicken.”
He wants to groan in exasperation, but keeps it in. He obeys and continues the preparation.
“So whatever happened to your face?” she asks again. “Why do you look like you’ve been mauled by some beast?”
Zack freezes for a moment before continuing with his task. “I... there’s a robbery,” he answers vaguely, hoping she would drop the topic.
“Robbery?!” she exclaims, slamming hard at the table. “You should have told me!”
“But I—”
She groans. “I will call your parents!”
“There’s no need, I—”
“Shut up!” she says, and then she’s gone. She’s probably going to take her phone or something.
Zack groans again and continues with his task of preparing dinner. This is the reason he doesn’t want to meet her while his injuries are still healing. She will start being a pain in the ass.
After a while, Celeste returns to the kitchen. “Here, your mother wants to talk to you. In the meantime, I will just take a bath.”
“Yes?” he asks on the receiver.
“Zack? QuickFix has been robbed?”
“Yes, ma, but I am okay.”
There is a pause on the line and then his mother says again, “You might want to consider moving out and finding a place of your own? You’re becoming a burden to Celeste.”
‘The robbery is not my fault!’ he’d like to say, but he keeps mum.
“Zack, your cousin can’t support you forever. I heard she also buys your groceries, pays the rent and your utilities. You’re already too old to depend on her.”
Zack’s heart sinks as his mother’s words hit him like a ton of bricks. He knows she’s right. He can’t keep depending on Celeste for everything. But where will he go? What will he do? How can he support himself? He doesn’t have enough money to pay for rent and bills. And now he’s fired.
His mother sighs on the other line. “I think it’s time for you to start being independent. You’re already twenty-five and you’re still living with your cousin.”
“I know. I will figure something out,” Zack promises, even though he has no idea how.
“You better do,” his mother replies before ending the call.
Zack stands there for a moment, feeling helpless and lost. What can he do now? The job market is tough, and he doesn’t have a degree or any special skills that could land him a decent paying job.
He shakes his head and continues with dinner preparations. After a while, Celeste comes in.
“Is the dinner done?” she asks.
“Yes,” he answers, placing the food on the table while Celeste waits eagerly in her seat.
“Hmmm, that smells good,” she says with a smile as she takes in the aroma of the food. “Ah, right! I almost forgot to mention. I will be on vacation for the coming weeks. So, you will be alone for a while. You don’t need me to buy additional groceries right? You can buy them once you get your salary.”
Zack freezes as he looks at her, processing the information. Celeste is going on vacation? That means he will be left alone in the apartment for a few weeks. Panic starts to settle in as he thinks about how he will survive without her. There are groceries, but it won’t last him for over a week, and he doesn’t have any salary.
But before he can even voice out his concerns, Celeste continues, “And don’t forget to clean up after yourself. I don’t want to come home to a messy apartment.”
He nods absentmindedly, still trying to think of a solution. He can’t let her know that he’s worried about being left alone and unable to take care of himself.
“Remember,” Celeste says sternly, interrupting his thoughts once more. “I don’t want any wild parties happening here while I am gone, okay?”
Zack nods quickly, not trusting himself enough to speak without revealing his worries.
“Good,” Celeste says with a nod. “Now, I can’t wait to eat!”
It is a hot day as Zack lies on his bed and stares at the ceiling, doing and thinking nothing. Suddenly, his phone buzzes. He automatically picks it up, thinking that it’s Mason, and starts the call.“Mason?”“Brother? Zack?” she starts, her voice trembling. It is his sister, Trina.“Hi, Trina, how are you?” he asks.“Zack, thank god! I finally reached you!”He scratches his head. For the past few days, he is not answering any calls from them. He knows what they want — more money. And it is something he doesn’t have. He doesn’t even know how to survive the following weeks. He tried to look for work, but none were asking him to come for an interview.“Zack, are you still there?” she asks.“Yes, I am still here.”“My tuition is due, and if it’s unpaid, I won’t be able to graduate.”His gaze sweeps across his tiny room. What can he even do? He can’t even fend for himself.“The fees are due next week, Zack,” she continues, her voice filled with desperation. “If I don’t pay, I can’t take my
Zack scratches his head as he stares at the emails on the computer that Celeste allows him to borrow. His eyes scan through dozens of rejection emails, each one a punch to his gut. He rubs his temples, trying to ease the tension building up.He glances at his tattered leather wallet and takes another heavy sigh. His phone lights up and he reads the message from Trina. It is the amount of tuition he needs to pay and how to pay it. And now, his situation presses him down further, making it hard to breathe.Feeling defeated, Zack continues to search for job posts, his desperation creeping in. Finally, he comes across an advertisement for an online loan facility. He hesitates for a moment, but then clicks on the link. Maybe this is his last chance to make enough money to pay his tuition and survive until Celeste arrives and he can look for a new job.“Hello, Borrower,” a flashing marquee greets him as the website loads. “We’re here to help you with all your financial needs. What can we do
“I will extend my vacation for a few more weeks.”Zack rereads Celeste’s text message for a hundred times. Since then, days have turned into weeks with no luck in finding a job. He stares at the overdue notice from the loan facility. His money is quickly depleting. He has been trying so hard to find a job, but it seems like every door is closing on him.“I can’t believe I missed the first payment,” he mutters to himself. He begins to feel desperate as he realizes that he won’t be able to pay next month as well, if he won’t get a job soon.He sits on the couch and stares blankly at the TV, trying to distract himself from all his worries. Suddenly, there’s a sound coming from the door. Zack gets up just in time to find Celeste standing there with a big smile on her face.“Hey Zack!” she exclaims, holding up a shopping bag filled with goodies. “I’m back from vacation!”Zack forces a smile. Seeing her again, he feels relieved, but at the same time, he feels annoyed.“That’s great,” he mutt
“Why are you so slow?!” Celeste scolds. She meets him by the door and snatches the bag of groceries that she asked him for. “It’s painful, ugh! I need my pain reliever since an hour ago.”She takes what she needs and leaves him by the door. She moves to the living room, not even noticing the beating he has just endured just because she went away and been very happy while on her vacation! She turns towards him and snaps, “Hurry up with the other groceries, Zack! What are you standing there for?”“I-I’m sorry,” he stammers weakly, trying not to show his pain.Celeste rolls her eyes and shakes her head before returning her attention to the bag.“Do you need anything else?” he asks, trying to sound helpful.“Just my pain reliever… Where is it…” Celeste grumbles as she rummages through the groceries. “And probably some snacks.”“Here you go,” he says, handing her the pain reliever.“Hmm, you’re not as useless as I think you are,” she says and snatches the medicine from him.Zack flinches wh
“What happened to him?” “He was beaten up. Someone saw him in the alley and called for help to get him here.” Zack groans as he blinks and tries to focus on the voices around him. His eyes slowly adjust and he sees two figures standing over him. He immediately recognizes one of them as Celeste. He tries to sit up, but pain shoots through his body and he groans again. “Celeste?” he whimpers. “Are you now ready to tell me what’s happening with you?” she asks, a scolding tone in her voice. He grimaces as memories of the beating flood back into his mind. He winces in pain, trying to sit up again. He was beaten up more than he thought. “You’ve been badly beaten up, Zack. You need to rest,” the male nurse says as he places a hand on Celeste’s shoulders. “Be kind, Celeste. I will leave now, but if you need help, just tell me.“ She nods and when the nurse leaves and closes the door, Zack fears the incoming admonishment. She didn’t speak immediately though, but she moves closer and check
*********** TRIGGER WARNING: Self harm and Suicide. Consider yourself warned. ************ Zack hunches over in the corner of his room in Celeste’s apartment. He returned from the hospital yesterday and he hasn’t left his room since then. He is afraid to come across the loan sharks again. Thankfully, Celeste is too angry to request things from him. He shifts his attention to the window, which is covered in blinds, not allowing any light to flicker inside his room — or Celeste’s room, since she is the one paying for the entire apartment. “Useless,” he whispers in the darkness. He already knows it. He is fucking useless, but Celeste should have been more gentle about it, even if it is true. How can she dismiss his struggles with such callous indifference? He is also her family. Besides, it is also partly her fault, right? And now, he has hurt her, too. He scratches his head and hides his face. He doesn’t want to hurt her like that. He just wanted her to see his worth. That’s all he
Zack’s consciousness flickers like a faulty bulb of light, thrusting him back into the realm of the living with a jarring dissonance. His eyelids pry open, his gaze fixed on the bland ceiling. A sterile scent mingles with antiseptic as he realizes that he is back in the hospital again. He can even hear the sound of a machine beeping in a steady cadence. Zack sits up, but his body is aching. He feels weak and there are some tubes connected to him. He is about to take it off him when a voice says, “Easy now.” He shifts his attention to the voice and finds the same male nurse who acts more than a friend to Celeste. He snorts. He is about to say something when he realizes that he feels exhausted. “You are in a hospital, Zack,” he says. “Do you remember me?” He looks away. “The man Celeste is fucking,” he says. His throat is raw and dry. “Oh, you are still jealous,” he says, chuckling while giving him a glass of water. “She’s my cousin. I am not jealous.” “Just angry, huh?” he asks.
Zack freezes as Celeste wraps her arms around his neck. He doesn’t know how to respond. She is crying and trembling and the arms around him are getting tighter. “Zack, please let me help you,” she offers again. “You’ve been adrift for far too long.” His throat tightens. The walls he has built around himself are beginning to crumble under the weight of her words. Rather, her words feel like a lifeline tossed to him. Should he really grab it? Will his pride allow it? But he has been receiving her help for quite a while, right? It’s just a matter of finally admitting it. When he doesn’t respond, Celeste says with her voice trembling, “Why do you hate me so much?” Her initial anger, hot and bright, begins to wane, replaced by anguish and pain instead. “I don’t hate you,” Zack finally replies. “I think I just... I envy you.” She continues to cry, his shoulder getting wet with her tears. In truth, Zack wants her to hit him instead, rather than her, hugging him like this, trembling, as i
Then Zack notices something else as well. At the man’s head, there are small horns protruding from his forehead. No, not just any horns. They are black and twisted and seem to pulse with an otherworldly energy. And so he grips his katana tighter, trying to steady his trembling hands. He knows that this will not be an easy fight, but he also knows that he cannot back down either.“What are you?” Zack manages to ask, his voice shaking slightly. The dark mage chuckles. “I am a human and a dark mage,” he declares proudly. “I think you know that by now, given how you are looking at me.”“Then… how are you affiliated with the loan agency?!”“Ah, that? Well, I get my fresh supplies of humans to experiment on from them.”“What kind of experiments?” Zack demands, his grip on his katana tightening even more. The dark mage chuckles, a sinister gleam in his eyes.
Zack takes a deep breath and tries to calm his nerves. He knows he’s no match for this level 32 woman, but he refuses to back down. He grips his katana tightly and prepares for the fight ahead. The woman rushes towards him with surprising speed, her fists clenched and ready to strike. Zack quickly evades her punches and tries to strike back with his katana, but she dodges effortlessly.“You’ll have to do better than that,” she taunts, her voice filled with confidence.Zack grits his teeth and tries to think of a strategy. He knows that he can’t rely on brute force alone, so he decides to use some of his skills. He concentrates and activates his Power Strike. But she easily deflects it with a flick of her knife.“Not bad,” she comments as she continues to dodge Zack’s attacks. “But you still need more.”Zack’s frustration builds within him as he realizes that none of his skills are wo
Zack takes out the katana from his weapon storage. Holding the weapon in his right hand, he pushes open the door with his left.In the middle of the room, a man stands before him who is eyeing him warily. “An attack, huh?”Zack places the katana in front of him. “It might be,” he answers.“But why is there only a single person? Are you crazy?”“The others asked the same earlier.”“This place. Is this your doing, too?”“No,” he admits.“You have a weapon. Do you know how to use that?”“We’ll find out.”Zack keeps his guard up as the man suddenly lunges at him with his bare hands. He swiftly dodges the attack and counters with a slice from his katana. The man stumbles back, surprised by Zack. “Ugh, where are my gun and knife, anyway?” he mutters to himself. The man attacks again, but Zack is faste
Zack steps inside. The place behind the fourth door is dark and musty, with only a small beam of light shining through a crack in the ceiling. In front of him is an old man who seems lost and is looking around. The instant Zack enters, he looks at him.“A young man,” he remarks. “Care to tell me where I am and who you are?”“I am sent to destroy a loan shark agency,” he admits.“Oh,” the old man says, looking up at him. “So, you’re here to defeat me.”“You?”“Are you hesitating because of my age?”Zack swallows. He doesn’t want a repeat of the zombie dungeon. He doesn’t enjoy hurting the elders. While he is hesitating, the old man takes his stance and prepares for battle.“I really—”Suddenly, the old man moves surprisingly fast for someone his age. He launches punches and kicks towards Zack. Thankfully, he has a Quick Dodge, and he is able to evade each surprise attack.“You’re good,” the old man comments as they circle each other. “But can you keep up?”Their movements become faster
Zack opens the Zenith system interface. He presses on the Level Up? text and sees that he only gained one level from completing the first floor. He also only earned eight chests and a hundred thousand zeniths. It feels weird. This is a loan agency, and he is earning fewer zeniths than the zombie dungeon? So, he proceeds to open the items instead, hoping that there are some good items in there. However, there are only four health potions, one ability point, and the rest are zeniths. Disappointed, he stands up. He searches for the staircase and ascends it. He pushes the door open and is met with a line of goons on the second floor. Zack swallows hard. Unlike the goons on the first floor. These people are tall and very muscular. They look as if every single one of them is a VIP bodyguard. He won’t even be surprised if they are using guns. On the other hand, he has the same strength as the first floor. He hasn’t moved his available skill points into his stats yet. Hopefully, they only
The sun is setting as Zack goes back and forth across the same street where he chances upon the zombie dungeon. However, nothing is changing. It has the same atmosphere, the same clean looking building, and the same living people. No zombie dungeon is opening up! Disappointment washes over him. He prioritizes increasing his Luck attribute all because of this particular problem. His health is at 200/200 and he feels more than ready for a mission, and yet, it is not appearing! He looks at the time. It is close to six PM. He still has time. So, he explores the area again, looking for any clues or signs on how to enter that dungeon. As he walks down the busy street, Zack’s ears pick up on a loud argument coming from an alleyway between two buildings. Curious, he turns the corner to investigate. A group of men have another man backed against a wall, their voices filled with malice. One of the men spots him and sneers, “Beat it, kid.” Ignoring the warning, Zack steps forward and holds h
Zack wakes up with his stomach growling. He groans as he stretches his aching muscles, still feeling drained from his stay in that zombie dungeon. He slowly pushes himself out of bed and stumbles towards the kitchen. His health has regenerated, and it’s no longer decreasing. As he rummages through the cabinets and fridge, looking for something to eat, he hears Celeste’s voice coming from the living room. “You really need to take a bath, Zack,” she says. “How long did I sleep?” he asks. “I don’t know. I didn’t see you for a few days. But you smell terrible,” she remarks. Zack feels heat rising to his cheeks as he realizes that he must have smelled pretty bad after days without bathing. He’s just too hungry. In fact, he didn’t even notice Celeste when he passed through the living room earlier. “That bad, huh?” he asks, peeking from the kitchen and into the living room, where Celeste has her laptop on. She peers through her eyeglasses and nods. “Pretty bad,” she says, scrunching h
“AHHHHH!” Zack screams, trying to get courage and curb the pain from all the screaming. The time is ticking. Only five minutes remain and he is still sandwiched between the giant zombie and a wall of a house. ‘I need to kill it…’ he thinks to himself. Zack’s adrenaline kicks in as he tightens his grip on the longsword. He activates his Power Strike skill and uses all his remaining strength to pierce through the giant zombie’s skull. The longsword cracks and disintegrates into pieces, but not before delivering a fatal blow to the giant zombie. The giant zombie lets out a final roar before collapsing onto the ground, lifeless. Zack takes deep breaths, feeling exhaustion wash over him. The timer disappears, indicating that he has completed the task just in time. “Task Completed.” “Title Unlocked. You are now a Zombie Hunter.” “Weapon Storage Unlocked.” He wants to laugh at the absurdity of the rewards. What’s the use of a title? And now that his longsword has disintegrated, he ha
Zack heaves as he wipes the sweat off his forehead. He doesn’t know how many hours have passed since he pressed that YES prompt to continue defeating zombies. Thankfully, when he increased his Luck to 10. There are no more zombies of babies and young kids that appeared. He glances at the notifications in front of him. There are ten prompts about chests that are almost obscuring his vision. Earlier, he was making count of how often these chests appear and he realized that for a group of ten defeated zombies, there is a chance for at least one chest to appear. Then another notification appears about his Low health. Now, he’s on 5/100, almost dying. Instead of pressing the Level Up? text screen. He starts opening the chests instead, hoping that it contains one or two potions. Besides, potions in the shop are too expensive for him. One health potion in particular is around 200,000 zeniths. A longsword costs two million, while a katana amounts to four million zeniths! After opening the t
